In this book, we also want to convey a sense of the animator’s place in the making of the fi lm and their perspective on what hap- pened, along with their professional journey leading up to that point. Steve Segal was born in Richmond, Virginia, in 1949. He made his fi rst animated fi lms as a high school student before studying Art at Virginia Commonwealth University, where he continued to produce award- winning, independent ani- mated shorts. Aft er graduating, Segal opened a traditional animation studio in Richmond, making commercials and educational fi lms for ten years. Aft er completing the cult animated fi lm Futuropolis (1984), which he co- directed with Phil Trumbo, Segal moved to Hollywood and became interested in com- puter animation.

Swartz – Network Appliance ABSTRACT Usenet volume has been growing exponentially for many years; this growth places ever- increasing demands on the resources of a netnews server, particularly disk space – and file system performance – for the article spool area. Keeping up with this demand became substantially more difficult when it could no longer be satisfied by a single disk, and since netnews is incidental to SLAC’s research mission, we wanted to find a solution that could easily scale to meet future growth while requiring minimal system administration effort. In the process of evaluating the various solutions that were proposed, we developed benchmarks to measure performance for this specialized application, and were surprised to find that some of our beliefs and intuition were not supported by the facts. The alternatives considered by SLAC are described, as are the benchmarks developed to evaluate the alternatives, and the results of those benchmarks. While netnews is the application we examined, our experience will hopefully provide inspiration for others to more carefully evaluate their applications instead of using stock benchmarks that may not correlate well with the intended use. Our results may also break down some biases and encourage the reader to consider alternatives which might otherwise have been ignored.     MoMA Presents John Canemaker’s Two Guys Named Joe: Master Animation Storytellers Joe Grant and Joe Ranft October 1–2, 2010 The Roy and Niuta Titus Theaters Academy Award–winning animation filmmaker and author John Canemaker presents an illustrated lecture based on his new book Two Guys Named Joe (Disney Editions, 2010), an immensely entertaining and insightful portrait of the legendary animation storytellers Joe Grant (1908–2005) and Joe Ranft (1960–2005). In his long career at Disney, Grant helped create such masterworks as Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (1937), Pinocchio (1940), Fantasia (1940), Dumbo (1941), Make Mine Music (1946), and Lady and the Tramp (1955), as well as more recent hits like Beauty and the Beast (1991) and The Lion King (1994). Ranft, a Pixar creative cofounder and storyboard artist, is widely celebrated for his imaginative and irreverent contributions to such recent classics as The Brave Little Toaster (1987), Who Framed Roger Rabbit (1988), The Little Mermaid (1989), Tim Burton’s The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993), Toy Story (1995), James and the Giant Peach (1996), Toy Story 2 (1999), Monsters, Inc. (2001), and Cars (2006). Canemaker will sign copies of his book after the lecture on October 1.     1 To Infinity and Back Again: Hand-drawn Aesthetic and Affection for the Past in Pixar’s Pioneering Animation Helen Haswell, Queen’s University Belfast Abstract: In 2011, Pixar Animation Studios released a short film that challenged the contemporary characteristics of digital animation. La Luna (Enrico Casarosa) marks a pivotal shift in Pixar’s short film canon by displaying hand-drawn artwork and man-made textures. Widely considered the innovators of computer-generated animation, Pixar is now experimenting with 2D animation techniques and with textures that oppose the clean and polished look of mainstream American animation. This article aims to outline the significant technological developments that have facilitated an organic aesthetic by suggesting that nostalgia dictates a preference for a more traditional look. It will also argue that this process pioneered by Pixar has in turn influenced the most recent short films of Walt Disney Animation Studios. Pixar Animation Studios has been at the forefront of cutting-edge digital animation for over twenty-five years. The phenomenal success of Toy Story (John Lasseter, 1995), the world’s first fully computer-generated animated feature film, saw the “widespread popularization of 3D computer animation technologies in both animated and live action cinema” (Montgomery 7). Not only has the technology developed by Pixar become an industry standard for filmmaking, but the studio’s aesthetic style epitomises contemporary mainstream animation. While Colleen Montgomery argues that the technology pioneered by Pixar has “displaced hand-drawn traditions in mainstream American animation” (8), we are now witnessing Pixar’s experimentation with traditional 2D animation techniques and with textures that are organic and imperfect.
