  • Sea the Stars & Crystal Ocean
TUESDAY, 26 JUNE 2018 There was never going to be any difficulty in their first season, PEDIGREE INSIGHTS: SEA THE when Sea The Stars was priced at i85,000 and Frankel at ,125,000 and they respectively covered 136 and 131 mares. The STARS & CRYSTAL OCEAN problem is that there isn't an endless supply of breeders prepared to invest heavily in untried but high-priced stallions and events showed that not even Sea The Stars and Frankel were immune to the fluctuating demand that affects so many young stallions in their first four seasons. It now seems hard to believe that Sea The Stars's totals in those first four years were 136, 83, 138 and 82 mares. Frankel's figures were 131, 128, 104 and 105. Perhaps Frankel's arrival as a stallion in 2013 was partly to blame for Sea The Stars's book falling to 82 mares, but their main problem was that these unproven horses were competing against stallions whose ability to sire top performers had been proven time after time. Cont. p2 Crystal Ocean | Racing Post IN TDN AMERICA TODAY by Andrew Caulfield There was something of a family affair about the most TDN Q&A: AMERICAN PHAROAH’S FIRST YEARLINGS successful stallions at Royal Ascot last week, with the six Lucas Marquardt chats with Coolmore’s American nominations stallions responsible for two or more winners featuring Galileo, manager Adrian Wallace regarding the first yearlings by Triple Crown winner American Pharoah (Pioneerof the Nile). • Wootton Bassett
Wootton Bassett An unbeaten Gr.1-winning Champion 2yo in France, Wootton Bassett has the makings of a Champion stallion. Despite having stood his first five seasons at fees between €4,000 and €6,000, and having only 220 foals aged 3 or over in 2020, he has sired a string of classic performers. In addition to Champion Almanzor (won 2016 Prix du Jockey-Club), he has the Classic placed horses Patascoy, The Summit, Speak Of The Devil and Mageva. The chances are that his 2018 crop, sired at €20,000, will maintain his classic impact as it has already produced the promising 2YOs Chindit, Midlife Crisis, Early Light, Akmaam, Al Hawra and Incarville. Wootton Bassett works with a wide variety of mares highlighted by the fact that his first 16 Group/Stakes winners have 16 different broodmare sires. Delving into their pedigrees however reveals some very interesting inbreeding, linebreeding and crosses. Wootton Bassett has quite a few SWs with two lines of DANZIG, his Gr.1-winning daughter Audarya has a second dam by ANABAA. OASIS DREAM sired the dam of 2yo Gr.2 winner Chindit. Any mare with CAPE CROSS in her pedigree will also result in inbreeding to the champion 2yo Park Appeal and this has already produced Gr.3 winner The Black Album. Wootton Bassett has 4 winners from 4 runners out of daughters of INVINCIBLE SPIRIT. Mares by Oasis Dream’s son SHOWCASING produce 3x4 to the brilliant ZAFONIC. Wootton Bassett already has Gr.3 winner The Black Album inbred 3x3 to Zafonic. This direction is definitely one to follow especially when one considers that Wooded and Chindit are inbred 4x4 to Zafonic’s sire GONE WEST.
