RAISING THE STANDARD OF QUALITY In April 2010, the Hopkins House Helen Day Preschool Academy achieved national accreditation by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) . Firmly establishing itself as a center of excellence and quality, the Helen Day Preschool Academy received scores in excess of 96 (out of 100) in all 10 NAEYC standards while scoring at or above 100 (out of 100) in 7 of the 10 NAEYC standards . Magazine (January 2010 issue) surveyed more than 650 licensed childcare centers in Northern Virginia and ranked Hopkins House among the area’s top 50 preschools . The magazine ranked Hopkins House’s Helen Day Preschool Academy among the top two preschools in the City of Alexandria and the James L . & Juliette McNeil Preschool among the top 50 . The rankings were based on teacher certifications, child-to- teacher ratio, parent-teacher communication, curriculum standards, and physical condition .

NATIONAL IMPACT Congressman Jim Moran delivered news of a $250,000 federal grant to Hopkins House as part of the government’s Workforce Investment Act pilot program . The funds will be used to expand the organization’s Early Childhood Learning Institute (ECLI) . In partnership with Northern Virginia Community College, the ECLI offers low resourced teens and adults the opportunity to earn professional certifications, college credits, and higher paying employment in the early childhood education field .

CELEBRATING A HISTORY OF EXCELLENCE

Hopkins House celebrated its 70th anniversary on October 24 at the Westin Hotel in Alexandria, Virginia .Disco and R&B star Linda Clifford entertained the audience of 225 guests . Hopkins House alumni include the first African-American NBA player, the first African- American judge in the City of Alexandria, the first African-American Mayor of Alexandria, and a host of entertainers, teachers, and other professionals . Over seven decades, Hopkins House has helped thousands of individuals through a range of programs including preschools, employment training and placement, elder care, HIV/AIDS prevention, tutoring, and personal counseling .
