No.15 Henry, e. of Northumbria: general conf. of grants by Hugh de Morville and Beatrix de Beauchamp: 10.11.1150 x 12.6.1152 [ChDdI no.202. Date: foundation x d. e.]

No.19 Gamelin, bp of St Andrews: land in Kilrenny: 3.4.1266 [At Inchmurdo. 3 Non. Apr.] M. Ash, St Andrews Episcopal Acts, no. D10.

No.20 Margaret, of Ardross, dr of Merleswain, lord of Invergelly: letter to William bp of St Andrews that she is appointing her husb., Hugh of Berisby, to resign land of Invergelly: 27.9.1281 [At Newton. sabb. prox. a. fest. Mich. archang.]

No.21 Fraser, William, bp of St Andrews: conf. of no.20: 27.9. 1281 x 20.8. 1297 [Date: no.20 x d. grantor] M. Ash, St Andrews Episcopal Acts, no. F(1 st F) 3.

No.22 , Henry of: conf. of land in Anstruther granted by his father Henry. [Date: The initial grant by his father Henry predated no. 251, a papal confirmation (8.6.1229). This and no. 24 may have post-dated no. 251.]

NB. Henry father of Henry of Anstruther was probably the same Henry who witnessed a confirmation by Adam of Stawell to St Andrews Priory, 1215x25 ( St And. Liber , 271-2).

No.23 Vaux, William de: ch. of Gullane: circa 16.4.1221 or shortly thereafter. [Date: in presence of Brother James, papal legate; see no. 26 below ]

No.24 Anstruther, William, s. of Henry: probably after no. 22; x 27.8.1288 [Date: William’s son Henry declared lawful heir; CDS ii, no. 340]

NB. This, like no. 22, is a confirmation of the initial grant. Unlike no. 22, it is worded as a confirmation ( concessisse et hac carta mea confirmasse ) rather than a grant ( dedisse et concessisse et hac carta mea confirmasse ); thus, it may also be a confirmation of no. 22, which appears to be a re-grant in warrandice. It is possibly more likely that this William is the brother (rather than the son) of the Henry who granted no. 22, making both the sons of the 2 SYLLABUS OF SCOTTISH CARTULARIES DRYBURGH

Henry who made the initial grant x 1229. See also nos. 302, 303 below. This William and perhaps the Henry in no. 22 appears to be the ‘predecessors’ mentioned in no. 302.

No.25 Vaux, John de, s. of William: conf. of no.23: circa 16.4.1221 x 26.8.1267 , perhaps x 8.8.1223. [Date: no.23 x attestation of John’s successor, Alexander de Vaux; Glas. Reg ., no. 219; perhaps x no. 267 ]

No.26 James, papal legate: conf. of no.23: 16.4.1221 [At Kelso. 16 Kal. Mai. Year: see no.36 and 234]

No.27 William, bp of St Andrews: following on the agreement made under the authority of the papal legate Brother James between and the nuns of South Berwick, grants the church of Gullane in proprios usos to Dryburgh, with various named exceptions : 16.4.1221 x 31.3.1229, prob. early [Date: no.26 x no.268] M. Ash, St Andrews Episcopal Acts, no. A33.

No.28 Henry, pr. of St Andrews: conf. of no.27: 1225 x 21.5.1236, perhaps x 31.3.1229 [Date: succ. x res. pr., perhaps x no. 268 ] M. Ash, St Andrews Capitular Acts, no. C6.

NB. It is possible that this capitular confirmation, which probably was written a few years after William’s charter (no. 27 above), is in some way tied to the motivation to gain papal confirmation of this grant ‘ in proprios usos ’ in 1229.

No.29 Vaux, William de: grant to ch. of Gullane of Dirleton chapel and lb of incense: x 9.7.1238, prob. x soon after 16.4.1221. [Date: x no.30; William de Vaux’s last appearance on record is ca. 16.4.1221 ]

No.30 William, bp of St Andrews: conf. of no.29: 16.4.1221 x 9.7.1238, prob. early. [Date: last attestation of William de Vaux (who is dead at time of conf.) x d. bp Wm] M. Ash, St Andrews Episcopal Acts, no. A34.

No.31 Vaux, John de: grant to ch. of Gullane of stone of wax: x16.4.1221 x circa 20.9.1255; def. x 26.8.1267. [Date: after no. 29; grantor ]

No.33 Vaux, John de: grant to ch. of Gullane of crofts in Gullane: circa 1213 x circa 20.9.1255; def. x 26.8.1267. [Date: grantor ] 3 SYLLABUS OF SCOTTISH CARTULARIES DRYBURGH

No.34 Vaux: William de: grant to ch. of Gullane of meadow in Gullane: circa 1180 x circa 16.4.1221 , perhaps x 4.12.1214 [Date: grantor; perhaps x d. k. William]

No.106 Vaux, Robert de: land at Elbottle: perhaps 1212 x circa 1234

NB. This is very likely Robert II de Vaux, lord of Gilsland, Cumberland, whose uncle Robert I founded Lanercost Priory, which had land at Kingston to the SE of Dirleton. Robert succeeded to Gilsland after the death of his father Ralph in 1199 and had custody of John II de Vaux of Dirleton after he became a hostage of King John in 1213. A Robert de Vaux also witnessed a charter of William Noble to Newbattle Abbey relating to Kingston, and the charter was confirmed by William I de Vaux of Dirleton ( Newb. Reg ., nos. 116, 117). It is perhaps noteworthy in this context that the place-name Gilsland survives to the present immediately SW of North Berwick (OS: NT 545 845), 2 km north of Kingston and about 3 km east of . Robert had been a ward of the of Canterbury after his father’s death and was imprisoned in 1212, probably for nonpayment; for these reasons it is likely that this charter dates from after that time. His last known appearance was evidently as sheriff of Devon in 1233-34. [Barrow, Anglo-Norman Era , 21, 196; CDS i, no. 574; The Register of the Priory of Wetherhal , ed. J.E. No.285 Dunbar, Patrick of, e. of March: conf. all grants of predecessors: 16.11.1318 [At Dunbar. d. Jov. prox. p. fest.S. Mart. ep. in hieme (11 Nov.)]

No.285bis Vaux, Alexander de, ld of Dirlton: patronage of Gullane: 22.1.1240 x, prob. 20.9.1255 x [Date: witn. almost identical to those of no.286 (also includes Sir Thomas de Haya)]

No.286 Vaux, Alexander de: offerings for Dirlton chapel: 22.1.1240 x, prob. 20.9.1255 x [Date: cons. David of Bernham, bp. St Andrews x, prob. last attestation of John II de Vaux x]

No.287 Vaux, Alexander de: grants to Gullane ch. one stone of wax: 22.1.1240 x, prob. 20.9.1255 x [Date: as no.285bis]

No.288 Vaux, Alexander de, ld of Dirlton: isle of Elbotle and land in Elbotle, etc. (as in no.104 and 105): 22.1.1240 x, prob. 20.9.1255 x [Date: as no.285bis]

No.289 Vaux, Alexander de, ld of Dirlton: permission to abandon chantry in Elbotle: 22.1.1240 x, prob. 20.9.1255 x [Date: as no.285bis]

N.B. Note that this charter refers to a chantry, for which David, bp. St Andrews, gave permission, in no. 32. That charter tied the gift to the offerings, which would go to Gullane church. These offerings are mentioned in no. 286, which refers explicitly to Bishop David of St Andrews allowing them to have a chantry. This suggests that, while charters no. 285bis to 289 have identical witness lists (with the exception of no. 285 bis, which adds one individual without making any other alterations), they were not necessarily issued during Bishop David’s episcopate, just some time after David had allowed the addition of a chantry to the castle chapel. This makes sense as John II de Vaux appears to have still been alive in 1255. It is very likely that these charters postdate John II’s death as Alexander is called lord of Dirleton in three of them. Alexander’s other known attestation is from 26.8.1267 ( Glas. Reg. , no. 219).
