UPDATES IN “RED”

The outbreak of novel coronavirus (Covid-19)3 has resulted in multiple cancellations and affected itineraries for ocean and river cruise operators.

Overview

Many lines, including Royal Caribbean, Holland America, Cunard, Seabourn and MSC Cruises, have cancelled port calls in mainland China, Hong Kong and Taiwan.

Two cruise ships, Diamond Princess1 and World Dream2, have spent days in quarantine off the coasts of Japan and Hong Kong. Cruise lines have released new guidelines on boarding restrictions and screening requirements, and some have also banned anyone who holds a passport from China, Hong Kong or Macau, as well as passengers who have visited mainland China, including Hong Kong and Macau, within 30 days prior.

Viking has also cancelled its China river cruises through to June 2020 and Norwegian Cruise Line has cancelled Norwegian Spirit's visits to Asian ports until December 2020. More cancellations are outlined below.

Update: 02 Feb, 2020: AIDAperla, Refused entry (health fears) Maritime Bulletin reports the ship with more than 3000 passengers on board was prohibited from entry Castries, St. Lucia, Caribbean, on Feb 1, on arrival from St Vincent and the Grenadines, as per cruise itinerary. The ship reported several persons on board having respiratory problems, and the Department of Health found number of sick people to be unusually high, to grant free practice. There’s no mentioning of coronavirus and understood, there’s no suspicion of coronavirus infection, or any data to validate virus fears, but still… The ship approached Castries at around 0530 LT Feb 1(UTC -4), reduced speed, sailed in northern direction, turned back and approached Castries again at around 1400 LT, and again, moved away, drifting or moving at slow speed. Aurora Expeditions Travel Restrictions

Aurora Expeditions does not have any cruises in Asia but its ship Greg Mortimer is operating its maiden season in Antarctica, so the company has adopted guidelines set out by CLIA and IAATO (International Association of Antarctic Tour Operators), denying boarding to anyone who has traveled from, visited or transited via airports in China, Hong Kong, Macau, Japan and South Korea within 14 days of embarkation. Update: 03 March 2020: AIDAura - Cruise ship in Norway awaits virus test on 2 passengers COPENHAGEN – Associated Press is reporting that a German cruise ship with 1,200 passengers is moored in southern Norway waiting for the test results of two passengers who had been on land to be tested for the new coronavirus, officials said Tuesday. Update: 03 March 2020: No coronavirus on German cruise ship docked in Norway

Two passengers from a German cruise ship who were tested for coronavirus in Norway are not infected with the virus, test results have shown

The two people, who had been ashore in southwestern Norwegian city Haugesund, were tested on Monday because they had been in close contact in Germany with someone who was later found to have the virus. The cruise ship, the Aida Aura, was set to depart from the city on Monday but was detained after the two passengers awaited test results. Azamara Travel Restrictions

As of February 24 and until further notice, Azamara will adopt these protocols:

1. Regardless of nationality, boarding will be denied to any passenger who has traveled from, to or through mainland China, Hong Kong, Macau, Iran, South Korea, and the Italian regions of Lombardy and Veneto in the past 15 days; as well as any guest who has come in contact (within six feet) with anyone with 15-day prior travel to these regions. 2. Passengers who report feeling unwell or demonstrate any flu-like symptoms. 3. There will be mandatory specialized health screenings performed on any passenger who has traveled from, to or through Japan, Singapore, Thailand, and Italy (all regions other than Lombardy and Veneto) in the past 15 days, and those who are uncertain about contact with individuals who have traveled from, to or through these regions in the past 15 days. 4. Carnival Cruise Line

Travel Restrictions Effective from February 7, Carnival Cruise Line is following all CLIA regulations, and all booked guests who have traveled to, from or through China, Hong Kong or Macau in the 14 days before their departures will not be allowed to sail. Itinerary Changes All South Pacific cruises on Carnival Splendor and Carnival Spirit that were scheduled to visit New Caledonia's Lifou, Mare or Isle of Pines have been diverted to other ports in Vanuatu. Carnival Spirit, which departed Melbourne on February 10, called on Santo, Mystery Island and Port Vila instead of the three closed ports. Carnival Splendor, which departed Sydney on February 10, replaced Mare and Isle of Pines.

Update: 02 March 2020: Prudent or Paranoid: Jamaica and the Cayman Islands Block Carnival Cruise Ships from Their Ports

“There’s a difference of opinion, of course, whether these port states are acting prudently by prohibiting cruise ships from calling on their ports, or they are overreacting whenever a passenger or crew member has symptoms which could be just from the flu. Of course, these countries are sovereign nations which are free to adopt and enforce their health restrictions to protect their citizens and economies”

Today, Jamaica and the Cayman Islands informed two Carnival cruise ships that they are prohibited from calling on ports in these countries over concerns with coronavirus, according to crew members and passengers on the Carnival Freedom and Carnival Horizon who wish to remain anonymous. Passengers on the Carnival Freedom were notified today around noon that they will not be permitted to go ashore in Jamaica or the Cayman Islands during their cruise which left Galveston, Texas yesterday. The ship was scheduled to call on Montego Bay, Jamaica on Wednesday, March 4th and George Town, Grand Cayman on Thursday, March 5th.

Update: 05 March 2020: Carnival Cruise Line Changes Stops for 2 Ships Amid Ports’ Coronavirus Concerns The new details come after another ship from Carnival, the Costa Luminosa, reportedly docked in Jamaica last Friday but was not allowed to have Italian citizens get off. Ships from a Miami-based cruise line are having to readjust travel plans in light of recent measures from Caribbean countries to stop the potential spread of coronavirus. An official with Carnival Cruise Line confirmed that two ships – the Horizon and the Freedom – were scheduled to make stops in Jamaica and the Cayman Islands this weekend but will be making different stops. "While we are following all U.S. CDC and World Health Organization screening protocols and guidelines, we want to avoid any possibility of a visit to a destination where there is uncertainty or we risk being turned away," the company said in a statement Wednesday.

06 March 2020: Carnival Cruise Line is “Enormously Frustrated” After Ship Denied at Grand Turk

CruiseHive is reporting that the Carnival Magic was today denied to make its scheduled call in Grand Turk in the Turks and Caicos Islands. According to Carnival, there were some with flu-like symptoms onboard and authorities in Grand Turk decided to make the decision in not allowing the vessel to make its normal call. Itinerary Changes

Celebrity Cruises has canceled the rest of Celebrity Millennium's 2020 season in Asia. This includes cruises departing February 15 and 29, March 14 and 28, April 10 and 21 and May 10. The ship will reposition to the U.S. West Coast earlier than originally planned and offer a series of three, four and five-night Pacific Coastal sailings. March through mid-April, the ship will be hosting a number of "Cruising for Heroes" sailings in support of California's firefighters, first responders and veterans. Later in April, the ship will sail roundtrip from Seattle prior to the start of its 2020 Alaska season from Vancouver.

In addition, the line has changed its series of Dubai-to-Singapore and back sailings on Celebrity Constellation that were scheduled for February and March. The February 16 trip will also embark in Dubai, instead of Singapore, and travel roundtrip. The new itinerary will skip Phuket, Thailand, and extend port times in three India ports -- Cochin, Goa and Mumbai.

Celebrity Constellation's March 2 cruise will also become roundtrip from Dubai and skip Phuket, replacing it with a day at sea. This means Celebrity Constellation's March 17 departure will now embark in Dubai instead of Singapore, and Phuket will also be replaced with a sea day, plus port times extended in Cochin, Goa and Mumbai. Passengers on these two March cruises will receive an onboard credit equal to the rate of one cruise day.

Celestyal Cruises

Travel Restrictions

Celestyal Cruises has suspended crew movements from mainland China, including Hong Kong and Macau and will deny boarding to any individual, whether guest or crew, who has travelled from or through mainland China, including Hong Kong and Macau within 30 days from their embarkation, until further notice.

In addition, specific to the "Three Continents" itinerary only passengers who have visited China including Macau, and Hong Kong as well as Japan, Singapore and Thailand within 30 days from their embarkation will not be allowed to embark the Three Continents cruise in accordance with the requirements of Israeli public health authorities. Passengers should contact their original booking agent so that alternative options can be presented by Celestyal Cruises.

 Mandatory pre-embarkation screening

 Passengers of all nationalities are required to fill out a pre-embarkation health questionnaire to ensure no one boards their ship who has traveled from mainland China or visited mainland China, including Hong Kong and Macau 30 days prior to embarkation.

 Anyone who has traveled from mainland China or visited mainland China, including Hong Kong and Macau 30 days prior embarkation will be denied access to the ship once operations commence.

 Mandatory non-touch thermal scans using cameras will be conducted for all passengers and crew prior to embarkation for every sailing. Persons with signs or symptoms of illness such as fever or feverishness, chills, cough or difficulty breathing will be denied embarkation.

Costa Cruises

Travel Restrictions

Costa is following all CLIA regulations; booked passengers who have traveled to, from or through China, Hong Kong or Macau in the 14 days before their departures won't be allowed to sail.

As of February 22, the line has also decided to deny embarkation to all passengers from: Casalpusterlengo (LO), Codogno (LO), Castiglione D'Adda (LO), Fombio (LO), Maleo (LO), Somaglia (LO), Bertonico (LO), Terranova dei Passerini (LO), Castelgerundo (LO), San Fiorano (LO) in Lumbardy, and Vo' Euganeo (PD) in the Veneto region.

The line has also cancelled all shore excursions to Piemonte, Lombardia and Veneto Regions (in North Italy) that have declared the alert status.

Measures that the company has adopted the past few weeks include the introduction of a medical form for embarking passengers and preboarding health screening, with temperature checks for people who appear or identify as symptomatic (respiratory or fever symptoms). Any reports or detection of symptoms of illness during preboarding screening can be managed by medical professionals to allow for informed decisions on a case-by-case basis whether a passenger or crewmember will be unable to board.

Costa has canceled all of its February sailings on its four China-based ships: Costa Serena, Costa Atlantica, Costa Venezia and Costa neoRomantica.

When Costa Venezia docked in Shenzhen, a medical team boarded the ship was boarded and checked all 4,973 passengers and 1,249 crew for coronavirus symptoms. Media reported four were found to have high temperatures and 148 who came from Wuhan or who had visited the city recently were isolated for further screening.

Costa Smeralda, the line's newest and largest vessel, was held in Civitavecchia, the port for Rome, with suspected cases of coronavirus onboard. Update: 30 January, 2020: Costa Smeralda, Quarantined in Italy. ANSA reports 6000 passengers on an Italian cruise ship are currently blocked at Civitavecchia after a Chinese woman came down with a fever raising fears, she had contracted the new coronavirus. Her husband did not present symptoms. The couple, from Hong Kong, were tested by experts from Rome’s Spallanzani Hospital, which specializes in infectious diseases and viruses. The women is being held in isolation in the hospital ward aboard the Costa Crociere ship. The couple arrived in Italy at Milan’s Malpensa Airport on January 25. They boarded the ship at Savona earlier this week.

Update: 28 Feb 2020 According to a Costa ship employee, on the Costa Mediterranea: “Mauritius authorities banned Italian guests on the ship from entering the country due to coronavirus concerns. Also shore leave in Port Louis, Mauritius for Italian crew members was cancelled.” Also, Mauritius is blocking several hundred people (passengers and crew) from Italy who arrived on an Alitalia flight.

The M/V Costa Favolosa, was turned away from port in the British Virgin Islands on Wednesday 26th Feb 2020. The territory's government said several passengers had flown from Italy and boarded the ship in Guadeloupe and that there were cases of influenza reported aboard.

Travel Restrictions

Crystal Cruises is following all CLIA regulations. Booked passengers who have traveled to, from or through China, Hong Kong or Macau in the 14 days before their departures will not be allowed to sail.

Additionally, the line has updated its preboarding public health questionnaire to include questions concerning the coronavirus. Cruisers will be screened before they board for body temperatures of 100.4 degrees Fahrenheit (38 degrees Celsius) or higher and/or showing signs of respiratory issues. If anyone is determined unwell to travel, they will receive a full refund of their cruise fare, if they don't have insurance.

Furthermore, the line has canceled nonessential day visits to the ships when they are in port.

Itinerary changes

Crystal has made the decision to cancel the remainder of Crystal Symphony’s March and early April sailings that were scheduled to sail from Singapore. Cunard has canceled calls on QM2 to Hong Kong, Singapore and Vietnam's Ho Chi Min City and Nha Trang, instead sailing direct to Australia. On February 19, the ship departed from Fremantle and will visit Darwin on February 24 and 25 and Yorkeys Knob (Cairns) February 29, before continuing to Airlie Beach on its original schedule.

Queen Elizabeth's Asia season, from 8 March 2020 through 15 May 2020, has been canceled and will be replaced with an extended season in Australia. The new season will comprise two six-night Tasmania voyages, two 11-night New Zealand voyages and an inaugural 27-night full circumnavigation of Australia. Queen Elizabeth will then sail a 25-night Transpacific crossing from Sydney to Vancouver via New Caledonia, Hawaii, Los Angeles and San Francisco.

Queen Elizabeth's 2020 Alaska cruises are unchanged, and the ship will resume its Asia program in September 2020 as already published.

Dream Cruises has enacted restrictions on Explorer Dream, which is based in Australia and New Zealand for the summer season.

In accordance with the Australian Government's travel restrictions, all passengers, regardless of nationality, with recent travel to mainland China within the last 14 days will be prohibited from sailing on Explorer Dream's departures from February 2 to March 8. Other banned passengers include those diagnosed with coronavirus and their families, people who've been in close contact with coronavirus cases and their families, and people at the cruise terminal who have fever or other coronavirus-related symptoms, as well as their families. Itinerary Changes

It is not yet clear whether Explorer Dream will return to Asia in March, but the line recently announced the ship will return to Australia for the October 2020 to February 2021 cruise season.

Dream Cruises has canceled all future cruises of World Dream after the ship was temporarily placed under quarantine in Hong Kong on February 5. The ship was cleared on February 9 after no passengers or crew tested positive for coronavirus.

Dream Cruises has also suspended all Singapore operations.

Update: 27 Feb 2020: World Dream Indonesian Crew to be Evacuated on Uninhabited Island Around 250 Indonesian crew members will be evacuated from the cruise ship World Dream to deserted Sebaru Island located in the Thousand Islands (Kepulauan Seribu).

The evacuation of 188 Indonesian crew members (172 men and 16 women) from the cruise ship World Dream is currently underway. The 14-day itinerary for Westerdam was completely upended after every port on its February 1 itinerary refused it entry. Westerdam, which had departed Hong Kong on February 1, finally arrived in Sihanoukville, Cambodia, on February 13, and passengers began disembarking on the morning of February 14, after local health officials gave the all-clear. They were transferred via charter flights to Phnom Penh for forward travel home. Passengers and crew who have visited or transited via China, including Hong Kong and Macau, within 14 days of their voyage embarkation, regardless of nationality, will not be allowed to board Fram, Midnatsol, Roald Amundsen or Fridtjof Nansen. For all embarking guests and crew, filling out a standard health questionnaire is mandatory and shall be regarded as a prerequisite for embarkation. This data is collected and evaluated by responsible medical staff onboard. Passengers and crew who appear symptomatic with a communicable disease are subject to medical evaluations including, but not limited to, temperature checks as deemed necessary.

Any guest or crew member showing symptoms of any respiratory illness while onboard will be subject to screening for coronavirus, and may be subject to potential quarantine and disembarkation.

These are the municipalities that are subject to quarantine measures put in place by the Italian health authorities. 3. Anyone who, within 14 days before embarkation, has had close contact with, or helped care for, anyone suspected or diagnosed as having coronavirus, or who is currently subject to health monitoring for possible exposure to novel coronavirus, will be denied boarding 4. Mandatory non-touch thermal scans will be conducted on all passengers and crew before embarkation for every cruise operated by the company anywhere in the world, and people with signs or symptoms of illness such as fever or feverishness, chills, cough or difficulty breathing will be denied embarkation. 5. Elevated deep-sanitation will take place on every ship. 6. Guests who have fever symptoms onboard will be isolated in their cabins, and the same measure applies for their close contacts, including passengers staying in the same cabin and family members, as well as any crew member who might have served these passengers.

Itinerary Changes

MSC canceled sailings from Shanghai aboard MSC Splendida and repositioned the ship to Singapore to start its 27-night Grand Voyage to the Middle East and Europe, on February 14. As a result, calls to Naha, Japan and Hong Kong, which were part of the original Grand Voyage itinerary, have been canceled.

The skipped ports will be replaced by Langkawi, Penang and Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia, and Ho Chi Minh City in Vietnam.

Quark Expeditions has updated its health policy for all ships and all departures from February 9 to March 16, 2020. This includes an updated embarkation medical questionnaire and temperature screening for all passengers prior to embarkation. Passengers with temperatures over 100.4 degrees Fahrenheit (38 degrees Celsius) or respiratory issues will not be allowed to board.

Regent Seven Seas Cruises has canceled three voyages on Seven Seas Voyager and modified itineraries on two voyages on Seven Seas Mariner, Regent says. Following these changes, Regent will not have any vessels deployed in Asia until December 2020. The March 1, March 13 and March 27, 2020 voyages on Seven Seas Voyager have been cancelled. Modified itineraries include March 1 and March 19, 2020 on Seven Seas Mariner.

Any guest who exhibits symptoms of any respiratory illness while onboard will be subject to additional screening for Coronavirus at our onboard Medical Center and may be subject to potential quarantine and disembarkation.

These measures will remain in effect until further notice and are subject to change at any time, according to Regent Seven Seas Cruises.

Travel Restrictions

Between now and April 8, 2020, Regent Seven Seas Cruises is denying boarding to passengers and crew who have visited China, Hong Kong and Macau in the 30 days before embarkation.

Royal Caribbean has canceled 10 China and Hong Kong sailings on Spectrum of the Seas through March 21. The line will redeploy the ship to Sydney for an undisclosed period of time to offer complimentary cruises to firefighters and other volunteer first responders. New York Post reports more than 4,000 passengers fled a Royal Caribbean liner in Bayonne, New Jersey, on Friday after their Caribbean cruise — and four passengers were rushed to the hospital for testing. The four suspect passengers were all Chinese nationals who had recently traveled from home. They included one who fell ill with a fever on board and later tested positive for influenza. Some of the patients were wheeled off the vessel on gurneys, and all four were immediately taken to University Hospital in Newark

As reported in Cruise News on the 28th February, 2020, they stated they received the following information from several crew members on the Voyager of the Seas which is sailing an Australia itinerary after departing from Sydney. The future scheduled ports include Mystery Island and Vila in Vanuatu as well as several ports of call in New Caledonia – Mare, Lifou, and Noumea:

“The Voyager of the Seas has 2 or 3 crew members with flu-like symptoms aboard. The Vanatu and New Caledonia islands are not permitting the ship to disembark passengers due to concerns over coronavirus. Noumea initially said that it will accept passengers and crew but a few hours ago no one was allowed to disembark after the ship which docked for a short time. A flu outbreak sickened 82 people aboard a Royal Caribbean cruise ship that returned to Baltimore last week, prompting the cruise line to isolate them and notify the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, but none of the sick passengers and crew met the criteria for the coronavirus, a Royal Caribbean spokeswoman confirmed Friday.

Over the weekend (22-23rd Feb 2020), Seabourn Cruise Line announced it has replaced all Southeast Asia port calls for Seabourn Ovation sailings through April 2020. The ship’s next scheduled embarkation, originally planned for March 14, 2020 in Singapore, will now take place in Colombo, Sri Lanka on the same date.

Port calls from March 15 – April 3 are also affected, with some destinations changed and others rescheduled to alternate dates. Screening protocols that have been put in place include:

Update: 08 Feb, 2020: SuperStar Aquarius, return to Taiwan after refused by ports Mainichi reports a cruise ship that was turned away from Japan this week over coronavirus fears returned to Taiwan on Saturday, with everyone on board testing negative for the illness. Health and Welfare Minister Chen Shih-chung boarded the Super Star Aquarius as soon as it docked at the northern port city of Keelung around noon, leading a team of medical staff to perform health screening of the 1,738 passengers and 776 crew. In the evening, authorities announced that the tests showed that no one had the coronavirus. According to the ship and media reports, 41 of the guests had recently travelled to China, where the virus is spreading. Chen told a press conference before boarding the ship that all passengers could go home later in the day and self-monitor their health condition afterwards provided no one tested positive for the virus.

Coronavirus: Which Cruise Ports are Closed? www://cruisecritic.com

Between outright cruise port closures, ports only denying entry to Chinese, South Korean and Italian nationals, and ports randomly turning away ships out of a fear there might be a sick person onboard, it might feel like cruise ships are being bounced around -- all due to continuing concerns over the spread of coronavirus, which originated in Wuhan, China, but has since spread to every continent except Antarctica. Port closures are affecting multiple cruises, with itineraries either changing before the cruise departs or unexpected changes during a sailing when a port suddenly decides to turn a ship away.

The following is a status report of which cruise ports are denying entry to cruise ships, which ports are not allowing Chinese, South Korean and Italian passengers to disembark and which ports are randomly turning ships away.

Ports Currently Closed to Cruise Ships

Hong Kong: Kai Tak Cruise Terminal in Hong Kong has shut both its cruise terminals until further notice as cruise lines cancel sailings and adjust itineraries to avoid calls on several Asia ports due to the coronavirus outbreak.

South Korea: South Korea has implemented a temporary ban on all cruise ships docking at its ports. For February, the only ship scheduled to call in was Holland America Line's Westerdam, which was barred from entering multiple ports.

Kota Kinabalu, Malaysia: The Malyasian port of Kota Kinabalu has closed itself to all cruise ship traffic.

Taiwan: Keelung and other cruise ports in Taiwan closed their doors to cruise traffic on February 6, (making one exception on February 7 for a ship called Super Star Aquarius, which had a large number of Taiwanese passengers onboard).

Tonga: Entry to Nuku'alofa in Tonga was denied to Crystal Cruises' Crystal Serenity, CMV's Columbus and Transocean Kreuzfahrten's Astor.

New Caledonia: Three New Caledonian ports -- Lifou, Mare and Isle of Pines -- remain closed after tribal chiefs made an unprecedented decision to bar cruise traffic. Cruise lines are in communication with the local chiefs to attempt to find a solution to the disruptions.

Ports Denying Select Visitors

The Bahamas: No entry for anyone with prior 20-day mainland China travel, regardless of nationality

Indonesia: No entry permitted to China passport holders.

Israel: Visitors from China, Hong Kong, Italy, Japan, Macao, Singapore, South Korea and Thailand are barred from entering Israel.

Jamaica: All persons who have visited Italy, South Korea, Iran and Singapore in the last 14 days and who do not have permanent residency or marriage exemption in Jamaica will not be granted landing privileges at any of the country’s ports of entry; additionally, all persons entering the island from China are subject to immediate quarantine for a minimum of 14 days.

Japan: No entry permitted for China passports issued in Hubei province

Malaysia: No entry permitted for people with China passports issued in Hubei, Zhejiang or Jiangsu provinces

Philippines: According to Norwegian's website, the Philippines is not currently allowing Chinese nationals to disembark

Sri Lanka: No arrival visas for China passport holders

Singapore: No entry permitted for China passport holders, ship denied entry.

Vietnam: No entry permitted for China passport holders, ship denied entry.

Ports Turning Some Cruise Ships Away

In addition to Shanghai and Hong Kong, ports across Asia have experienced a shift in cruise passenger traffic, with no determination on when calls will return to normal.

British Virgin Islands: Tortola denied entry to Costa Favolosa on February 26 after consultation with the medical authorities on the island as some passengers had flown directly from Italy to join the ship. The ship continued its itinerary reaching the next port of call in Philipsburg (St Marteen), as scheduled.

Cayman Islands: On February 26, MSC Meraviglia was barred from entering the Cayman Islands.

Dominican Republic: On February 27, the port of La Romana refused entry to Braemar, a cruise ship in the Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines fleet, due to "a small number of influenza-like cases on board," and the cruise line is currently in discussions with nearby Caribbean islands to confirm the ship's next port of call. Fred. Olsen released the following statement (2/29): "Now that we have secured aircraft, we are continuing discussions with nearby Caribbean islands to confirm our next port of call, and acquiring the necessary permissions to land at the appropriate airports. These discussions are ongoing, and whilst we are unable to confirm final arrangements on when these flights will depart, and from which island, we are having positive discussions with the relevant authorities."

Jamaica: On February 25, MSC Meraviglia left Ocho Rios after awaiting a disembarkation clearance; a crew member had tested positive for influenza A (not coronavirus). According to an MSC spokesperson: "The local port health authority in Ocho Rios today requested further guidance from the National Ministry of Health in Jamaica’s capital of Kingston. After waiting in port for nearly four hours for formal clearance, ship’s command decided to leave Ocho Rios for the next port of call as the long wait had compromised the passengers’ proposed time at the destination."

Thailand: The Port of Bangkok (Laem Chabang) is among the ports that denied entry to Holland America's Westerdam, despite no cases of coronavirus detected onboard.

Vanuatu: The port denied entry to Royal Caribbean's Voyager of the Seas after three crew members tested positive for influenza, forcing the line to abandon an 11-day cruise through the South Pacific islands. The line released the following statement: "We have advised guests on Voyager of the Seas that we are reviewing itinerary options as an alternative to Bay of Islands, New Zealand. Complications in completing a hull inspection over the weekend have prevented renewal of our New Zealand entry permit. We continue routine medical observation of our three crewmembers who tested positive for influenza A and remain in temporary isolation. We apologize for any inconvenience to our guests and will keep them abreast of modifications to our schedule." Voyager of the Seas departed Sydney on 25 February on an 11 night South Pacific cruise.

As you undoubtedly know, the coronavirus COVID-19 is causing concern in the general public and among those of us engaged in travel. At Viking, the safety and security of our guests and employees has always been our top priority. We have implemented enhanced health screening procedures for all guests and staff before boarding our vessels and everyone is required to complete a health care questionnaire before embarkation. We continue to reiterate the importance of individual hygiene, sanitizing and washing of hands.

We continue to monitor the COVID-19 situation closely including the travel advisories issued by the U.S. State Department and information updates issued by the Centers for Disease Control in the U.S. and the World Health Organization in Switzerland.

This is a situation that can change from day to day, and we can well understand that the decision of whether or not to travel may be weighing on your mind – particularly for those with imminent departures.

In view of this we are for the time being making a temporary exception to our cancellation policy so that you can be free to postpone your cruise at any time up until 24 hours before the planned departure, without incurring any cancellation fees. You will be issued a voucher for future travel valid for 24 months, which can be used on any Viking product (river, ocean or expedition). This temporary exception to our standard cancellation policy is applicable for all guests who currently have a reservation with Viking and for all new reservations made through April 30, 2020.

The temporary exception to our cancellation policy is as follows:

 Notification of your intent to postpone your current cruise must be received as follows:

If you have flights arranged by Viking, it must be received at least 24 hours prior to the time of your flight's departure.

If you have arranged your own flights, it must be received at least 24 hours prior to the time of embarkation of the cruise or your hotel check-in, whichever is first.

 Cancelled reservations will be reimbursed in the form of a Future Cruise Voucher in the amount of 100% of all funds paid to Viking.  Future Cruise Vouchers may be used toward any future river, ocean or expedition cruise with Viking and will be valid for 24 months from issuance.

In response to travelers’ rising concerns over the worldwide spread of the COVID-19 coronavirus, many cruise lines are modifying their cancellation, booking and even payment policies to provide their customers increased peace-of-mind, options and flexibility, both for those with cruises already booked and those considering booking a cruise vacation during the upcoming summer and autumn seasons. Many of these policies have been issued on a temporary basis in light of the evolving COVID-19 situation and may continue to adapt as circumstances unfold. Some cruise lines are also offering incentives alongside these policies for guests who choose to keep their scheduled departure dates as already booked. What follows is a summary of some major cruise carriers' modified policies:

Carnival Cruise Line is putting measures in place to provide guests with additional rescheduling options and flexibility for those with vacations booked between now and May 31, 2020, as well as incentives to proceed with their plans.

—Customers booked for sailings between March 9 and March 31, 2020, can reschedule their booking up to 72 hours prior to departure without. The Future Cruise Credit (FCC) issued in lieu of their trip must be used to sail by March 31, 2021.

—Those booked on sailings departing between April 1 and May 31 will have the ability to change their booking to a future date through March 31, 2020. Those who choose to keep their bookings during this time frame will receive Onboard Credit (OBC) amounts of:

—$100 per cabin for 3- and 4-day cruises —$150 per cabin for 5-day cruises —$200 per cabin for 6-day and longer cruises Guests who choose to go through with their scheduled sailings will automatically receive the credit in their ‘Sign & Sail’ onboard account.

Crystal Cruises has implemented new cancellation guidelines for active and new bookings on upcoming departures aboard Crystal Serenity, Crystal Symphony, Crystal Esprit and Crystal Endeavor, as reported by Cruise Critic.

—Now through April 30, 2020, for cancellations made up to 31 days prior to embarkation, guests can receive the equivalent of their cancellation penalties in the form of a Future Cruise Credit. The FCC is then valid towards Crystal’s ocean, river, yacht and expedition voyages scheduled for embarkation on or before December 31, 2021.

Disney Cruise Line has just released an update to its previously-announced, temporary policy changes aimed at providing its guests with further flexibility at this time.

—Guests currently booked on European cruises having departure dates through July 25, 2020, can change their reservations up until the day before their scheduled embarkation and receive a 100-percent Future Cruise Credit, which must be applied towards another sailing within fifteen months of the original sail date.

— Guests booked for the European sailings departing July 13, 18 and 25, 2020, will be permitted to delay submitting their final payments up to 30 days prior to the sailing.

All FCCs are non-refundable and standard prevailing rates for future cruises will still apply. Travel agents representing guests who would like to rebook may do so by calling 1-866-325-2112.

Holland America Line has likewise made short-term alterations to its cancellation policy and, in the current atmosphere of uncertainty, launched a “Book with Confidence” program for reassurance about future bookings.

—Guests with existing reservations for upcoming voyages may cancel their cruise or Alaska Land+Sea Journey on departures through May 31, 2020, and be issued a Future Cruise Credit for their paid fare amount to be used towards another cruise in 2020 or 2021.

—Cancellations must be made at least 72 hours in advance of the departure date and no later than March 31, 2020.

—Guests booked between now and March 9, 2020, will also be covered for cancellations under this new policy, despite being within 72 hours of sailing.

—Future Cruise Credits must be applied towards a booking by December 31, 2020.

—As an incentive, guests who choose to keep their bookings through May 31, 2020, will receive an Onboard Spending Credit of $200 per stateroom or $100 per person for voyages longer than seven days, and $100 per stateroom or $50 per person for voyages under six days in duration.

Under Holland America’s new “Book with Confidence” program, guests making new reservations by April 30, 2020, for departures through October 15, 2020, can cancel for any reason up to 30 days prior to embarkation and receive a Future Cruise Credit in the amount of any applicable cancellation fees. Holland America also offers optional Cancellation Protection Plans on new and existing cruises or Alaska Land+Sea Journeys, which allow guests to cancel up to 24 hours before or even right up to the time of departure with 80- to 90-percent refund rates.

Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL) is also adopting and introducing its new “Peace of Mind” policy to afford guests even more freedom and flexibility.

—Guests who book any cruise by September 30, 2020, will retain the right to cancel their cruises up to 48 hours prior to the sail date and still receive a 100-percent Future Cruise Credit.

—The Peace of Mind policy applies to new bookings, as well as all existing reservations, beginning March 10, 2020.

—Any FCCs issued will need to be applied towards another NCL cruise departure through December 31, 2022.

Oceania Cruises has announced its new “Traveler’s Assurance” booking policy, guaranteeing no-penalty cancellations and a best-price guarantee, and made effective immediately.

—Guests may cancel up to 48 hours prior to embarkation and receive a Future Cruise Credit for 100- percent of the cruise fare paid with no penalties.

—The policy is valid on all existing reservations and new bookings made by April 30, 2020, and applicable to any voyages departing between March 10 and September 30, 2020.

—Future Cruise Credits must be redeemed within one year from the date issued for travel departing no later than December 31, 2022.

What’s more, consumers and travel advisors can book with supreme confidence knowing that, up to the day of sailing, they can take advantage of any other applicable promotions that may pop up offering better pricing or value.

Princess Cruises is temporarily modifying its cancellation policy for cruises and cruise tours departing through May 31, 2020. The specifics vary by departure date:

—April 3 or earlier: Cancel up to 72 hours prior to sailing to receive Future Cruise Credit (FCC) for 100- percent of cancellation fees.

—April 4 - May 31: Cancel by March 31, 2020, and receive FCC for 100-percent of cancellation fees.

—June 1 - June 30: Final Payment moves to 60 days prior to sailing (from 90 days).

Departure dates are defined as the start date of guests’ cruises or cruise tours, whichever is earlier. The revised policy excludes chartered cruises. Guests who choose to keep their currently-scheduled bookings for sailing between March 9 and May 31, 2020, will be issued the following Onboard Credit amounts: —$100 per cabin for 3-day and 4-day cruises —$150 per cabin for 5-day cruises

—$200 per cabin for 6-day and longer cruises

Riviera River Cruises is also temporarily updating is deposit and cancellation policies in response to the current climate.

—On new reservations, guest deposits will be fully refundable up to 60 days after booking.

—After 60 days, clients who cancel their plans can have their deposit transferred to any other 2020 or 2021 Riviera River Cruises sailing.

—Those who have deposited, but not fully paid can delay paying in full up to 30 days prior to departure or transfer their deposit to any other 2020 sailing.

—Clients who have paid in full and are scheduled for travel to areas that, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), are affected by COVID-19, will be offered a full Future Cruise Credit should they choose to cancel.

—Clients traveling to areas deemed non-affected by the CDC who chose to cancer will incur standard cancellation penalties.

Royal Caribbean has instated its “Cruise with Confidence” policy, enabling guests to cancel their plans up to just two days prior to departure. Up to 48 hours before sailing, guests can cancel and still receive full credit for their fare, usable on any future sailing of the guest’s choice for travel in 2020 or 2021. The “Cruise with Confidence” measure applies to both new and existing bookings across the company’s four global brands—Royal Caribbean International, Celebrity Cruises, Azamara and Silversea—and covers all voyages with a sailing date on or before July 31, 2020.

Silversea Cruises is temporarily easing its new-booking, rebooking and cancellation policies. Those who book for sailings departing between June 1 and December 31, 2020, can cancel until just 30 days prior to departure, paying only a customary administrative fee on the cruise fare. On both existing and future bookings for all sailings departing between June 1 and July 31, 2020, Silversea guests have a few options:

—Those who cancel at least 30 days prior to their sailing date can opt to receive either a 100-percent cash refund or 100-percent Future Cruise Credit refund (see Silversea’s full policy amendment for details)

—Those canceling their trip between 30 days and 2 days prior to departure will receive a Future Cruise Credit for 100 percent of their fare.

—Cancellations occurring with two days of departure will incur full cancellation penalties and are also subject to a $200 administrative fee.
