It was Aiko's first release under the label since leaving her contract with Sony Records in 2003. After leaving Sony Records, Aiko released her first mixtape Sailing Soul (s) (s) (s) on her own; The mixtape featured performances by famous artists and was met with generally positive reviews and was nominated for Best Urban Contemporary Album at the 57th Annual Grammy Awards. In 2012, Aiko met with A'R's American producer and vice president at Def Jam No I.D., who eventually signed Aiko on his Artium Records imprint, through Def Jam. Most of the album was written by Aiko herself and includes production of No.D. and Fisticuffs, the latter of which is responsible for the production of most of the debut mixtapes Aiko Sailing Soul (s) (s) (2011). The album includes performances by several rappers such as Kendrick Lamar, Ab-Soul, Childish Gambino and Vince Staples. Aiko released the track 3:16AM for digital download on the iTunes Store on September 4, 2012. The song was released as the first single from Sail Out. Bed Peace starring Childish Gambino was released as the lead single on September 17, 2013. The single's artistic and music video was inspired by john Lennon's protest and Yoko Ono's Bed-Ins for Peace against the Vietnam War. Background in 2003, Aiko video for her debut single NO L.O.V.E when she was 15 years old. Aiko was due to release his debut album, My Name Is Jhene, but the album was never released due to tensions on the Epic label, which eventually led to Aiko being released from the label. The Worst is a R.B.A. song that lyrically discusses Aiko falling in love with someone she shouldn't. The song was compared to Sad's work because of Aiko's use of ethereal, Japanese phrasing along with the songs passionate street rap. 3:16, it's a song that lasts for three minutes and sixteen seconds that lyrically speaks about addiction, not just drugs, addiction to everything you go to when you're in your darkest place, and I think everyone can relate to that. We've all been to hell and back and forth, and that's pretty much what 3:16 is all about: going to hell and back. Comfort Inn Ending (Freestyle) includes big swaths and introspective lyrics that blend between rap and jazz style scat. Aiko released and promoted Sail Out as a bridge between her debut mixtape and her debut studio album, saying, It's like bridging the gap between my mixtape Sailing Soul (s) and Souled Out. The EP was November 12, 2013 with pre-order iTunes starting October 29. On October 22, 2012, Gina Aiko performed on Friday night at SOB, in which she performed songs from her mixtape Sailing Soul (s) (s) such as Higher and Space Jam, Aiko also debuted a new song from the album called What a Life. In 2012, Aiko also opened the long-awaited Life Is Good/Black Rage concert tour, headlined by other American artists, rapper Nas and singer Lauryn Hill. To promote the EP and The Worst Aiko performed it live on various occasions, on January 18, 2014, she performed the song on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon, accompanied by The Roots, the performance was described as emotional online edition of Rap-Up. On 22 January 2014, she performed the song at the BBC Radio 1 FUTURE Festival in Maida Vale, London, with her band in a streaming white dress. The following month, on February 13, Aiko performed a song on Conan. On May 27, 2014, Aiko performed a single on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, and the play featured lights lit and Aiko barefoot.
