World Green Organisation (WGO) is calling the people to walk more and to cultivate a low-carbon lifestyle by reducing the usage of vehicles for short distances through its ‘Green WALK’ campaign. Many senior government officials and community leaders such as Professor Sophia Chan, Under Secretary of the Food and Health Bureau, Professor Peter Mathieson, President of the University of Hong Kong, and Ming Gor, ownder of Pei Ho Cha Chan Teng in , showed their support by participating in the ‘Green WALK with Leaders’ event last week. WGO invited Mr. Yau Shing-mu, Under Secretary for Transport and Housing to: 1) Climb over 500 steps on the stone staircase 2) Reach, enjoy, and take a selfie at the Urban Green Ridge – Garden Hill Peak 3) Advocate walking instead of taking short-distance vehicles to reduce carbon emissions.

Details of the event are as follows: Date: October 13, 2016 (Thursday) Time: 2:45pm to 3:30pm Meeting Venue: Main Entrance of , 70 Bar Street, Sham Shui Po Arrival Location: Garden Hill Peak Mr Yau Shing-mu and Dr. William Yu, Chief Executive Officer of WGO was joined by community leaders from various sectors such as construction, accounting, and the health sector. Under Secretary for Transport and Housing, Mr. Yau Shing-mu mentioned that “walking from the Government Headquarters in Admiralty to Wanchai, Central, or Harbour Road to get lunch only takes about 10 minutes. This is much faster and more convenient than taking public transportation. This path is fully covered so there is no worry about getting wet. There are many benefits of walking. These 500 steps is easy. Everyone in Hong Kong must walk more together.”

Garden Hill is a small hill located in the of Hong Kong. Garden Hill gets its name from the Garden Bakery which is located at the foot of the path. Many local residents frequent this walk which overlooks the public housing estates, the old Sham Shui Po and buildings, as well as the Stonecutters Bridge in the morning and sunset time.

In addition to the above activities, WGO will also hold a ‘Green WALK Hong Kong 2016’ event on November 5th as part of the ‘Green WALK’ campaign. On this day, the general public can find “Green WALK” checkpoints through our map of Hong Kong by downloading the “Green WALK” app and explore the vast array of historical and cultural sites that Hong Kong has to offer. The phone app also records the number of steps taken, the amount of calories burned, and also the sum of carbon emissions reduced. Through this event, we hope to inform the public the benefits of walking and the importance of reducing carbon emissions, and challenge Hong Kong people to slow down and enjoy the world around us.
