MLB.COM Reds expect new leading man Choo to star in Cincy March 26, 2013, 10:00 A.M ET By Mark Sheldon GOODYEAR, Ariz. -- Shin-Soo Choo is pleasant, thoughtful and polite, but his mere presence at the top of Reds' lineup is the club's not-so-subtle way of sending a warning to all foes. Cincinnati doesn't just want to repeat as National League Central champion, it expects to win the World Series -- this season. "I think that's pretty much what they're saying," Reds third baseman Todd Frazier agreed. Despite knowing full well that he was eligible to become a free agent after this season, the Reds did not blink when acquiring Choo from the Indians. It meant dealing away center fielder Drew Stubbs and promising shortstop prospect Didi Gregorius in the three- way deal with the D-backs. The Reds got their leadoff hitter, the catalyst and the producer they so desperately craved and didn't have last season. Now they have one year to get it right with all of the pieces to the puzzle finally seemingly in place. It's not that up-and-coming leadoff hitter and top prospect Billy Hamilton is chopped liver, but Choo is a proven entity and he is here now. "He's going to be a huge asset to the team, both on the field and in the clubhouse," right fielder Jay Bruce said. Not only is the 30-year-old Choo capable of getting on first base to set the table for Brandon Phillips, Joey Votto and the rest of the order, he can just as easily make it a 1-0 game after one at-bat.

MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL WEEKLY NOTES FRIDAY, JULY 28, 2017 BLACKMON WORKING TOWARD HISTORIC SEASON On Sunday afternoon against the Pittsburgh Pirates at Coors Field, Colorado Rockies All-Star outfi elder Charlie Blackmon went 3-for-5 with a pair of runs scored and his 24th home run of the season. With the round-tripper, Blackmon recorded his 57th extra-base hit on the season, which include 20 doubles, 13 triples and his aforementioned 24 home runs. Pacing the Majors in triples, Blackmon trails only his teammate, All-Star Nolan Arenado for the most extra-base hits (60) in the Majors. Blackmon is looking to become the fi rst Major League player to log at least 20 doubles, 20 triples and 20 home runs in a single season since Curtis Granderson (38-23-23) and Jimmy Rollins (38-20-30) both accomplished the feat during the 2007 season. Since 1901, there have only been seven 20-20-20 players, including Granderson, Rollins, Hall of Famers George Brett (1979) and Willie Mays (1957), Jeff Heath (1941), Hall of Famer Jim Bottomley (1928) and Frank Schulte, who did so during his MVP-winning 1911 season. Charlie would become the fi rst Rockies player in franchise history to post such a season. If the season were to end today, Blackmon’s extra-base hit line (20-13-24) has only been replicated by 34 diff erent players in MLB history with Rollins’ 2007 season being the most recent. It is the fi rst stat line of its kind in Rockies franchise history. Hall of Famer Lou Gehrig is the only player in history to post such a line in four seasons (1927-28, 30-31).

The Boston Red Sox Friday, June 16, 2017 * The Boston Globe Chris Sale brought his A game, but Red Sox didn’t bring bats Peter Abraham PHILADELPHIA — Chris Sale had a game he’ll never forget on Thursday night, for reasons good and ultimately bad. The Red Sox pitcher had the first extra-base hit of his career and ran the bases like a giraffe being chased by a lion, his long legs taking him to second base on a double in the eighth inning and then to third. But Sale was left stranded, then he allowed a run in the bottom of the inning as the Philadelphia Phillies beat the Red Sox, 1-0. The unlikely victory snapped an eight-game losing streak for the Phillies and was their first shutout of the season. The Sox failed to sweep the four-game, home-and-home interleague series. It was the sixth time the Sox have been blanked, matching all of last season. They managed only five hits, struck out 12 times, and were 1 for 8 with runners in scoring position. The Sox open a three-game series at Houston on Friday night. The 45-22 Astros have the best record in baseball. Sale (8-3) pitched his best game in several weeks. He allowed the one run on four hits and struck out 10 with one walk. It was the ninth time in 14 starts that Sale struck out 10 or more. “Just an outstanding performance all the way around,” Sox manager John Farrell said. “He personally did everything that he could to impact this game.” Sale got through seven innings with 93 pitches and took his turn at bat to start the eighth inning.

Box 757, Pocono Pines, PA 18350/ (570) 646-0100 http://www.bnaiharimpoconos.org NEWSLETTER /DECEMBER 2017/ VOLUME 23, ISSUE 12 RABBI’S MESSAGE - DECEMBER 2017 Chanukah is not only the Festival of Lights, it is the Holiday of Rededication. As a holiday that falls at the darkening of the year, it holds out the hope of the return of light and of its increase in the future. As the holiday of rededication, it turns us back to times of action and gives us a space to rekindle our passions. And, of course, it has become the holiday of the “present” as well! Rabbi Peg In the Talmud there is a debate between Rabbis Shammai and Hillel, the quintessen- Kershenbaum tial sparring partners. Shammai thinks that people should light 8 lamps (they didn’t use candles in those days) on the first night and one fewer each successive night, thus clicking off the days of the holiday until no lights are lit. Hillel believes that we should never decrease in holiness, so he recommends lighting one more lamp each night until the holiday goes out in a blaze of glory. As is mostly the case, we follow Hillel’s opinion. So, when we kindle our chanukiyot (Chanukah menorahs), we look forward to greater illumination each night. Chanukah also marked the time that the Maccabees purified the Temple in Jerusalem and re- consecrated it to the service of Adonai, driving out pagan practices, clearing away unkosher animal remains and tearing down the statue of Zeus.

Jewish Baseball by Justice Robert E. Gordon The Jewish players in the major leagues are: 1. Ryan Braun, age 34, Milwaukee Brewers outfielder in a 12-year career. Ryan’s father was born in Israel and Ryan became the 24th player to combine 300-plus homers with 200-plus stolen bases. Ryan will eclipse Hank Greenberg’s 331 homeruns this year. He was nine short at the start of the year. 2. Alex Bregman, age 24, Houston Astros third-baseman, was named Most Valuable Player in the American League in the All-Star Game in 2018, and finished 5th for the American League Most Valuable Player Award. Alex was a first-round draft pick. 3. Richard Bleier, age 30, is a left-handed pitcher for the Baltimore Orioles in his third big-league season, and had a 1.93 ERA last year. He had season-ending surgery and is on the DL. 4. Max Fried, age 24, is a left-handed pitcher for the Atlanta Braves, and is a promising star with a low ERA and may be one of the best relief pitchers in baseball. Max is a former first-round draft pick. 5. Ty Kelly, age 29, was a star for Team Israel, but this infielder and outfielder has yet to show such promise for the New York Mets. 6. Ian Kinsler, age 36, had a terrific major-league career as a great second-baseman, but this should be his last year in the majors with the San Diego Padres. 7.
