  • James Taylor
JAMES TAYLOR Over the course of his long career, James Taylor has earned 40 gold, platinum and multi- platinum awards for a catalog running from 1970’s Sweet Baby James to his Grammy Award-winning efforts Hourglass (1997) and October Road (2002). Taylor’s first Greatest Hits album earned him the RIAA’s elite Diamond Award, given for sales in excess of 10 million units in the United States. For his accomplishments, James Taylor was honored with the 1998 Century Award, Billboard magazine’s highest accolade, bestowed for distinguished creative achievement. The year 2000 saw his induction into both the Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall of Fame and the prestigious Songwriter’s Hall of Fame. In 2007 he was nominated for a Grammy Award for James Taylor at Christmas. In 2008 Taylor garnered another Emmy nomination for One Man Band album. Raised in North Carolina, Taylor now lives in western Massachusetts. He has sold some 35 million albums throughout his career, which began back in 1968 when he was signed by Peter Asher to the Beatles’ Apple Records. The album James Taylor was his first and only solo effort for Apple, which came a year after his first working experience with Danny Kortchmar and the band Flying Machine. It was only a matter of time before Taylor would make his mark. Above all, there are the songs: “Fire and Rain,” “Country Road,” “Something in The Way She Moves,” ”Mexico,” “Shower The People,” “Your Smiling Face,” “Carolina In My Mind,” “Sweet Baby James,” “Don’t Let Me Be Lonely Tonight,” “You Can Close Your Eyes,” “Walking Man,” “Never Die Young,” “Shed A Little Light,” “Copperline” and many more.

It is also, however, arguably the most dangerous communications tool we have invented to date. Most people have discovered that they have an extremely difficult time controlling how others perceive what they write. Where verbally we rely upon facial expressions, body language, and tone to express our feelings on a subject, in email we have none of these things. Therefore, personal catch phrases like “I don’t think I like your attitude” (with a big smile and a playful glare) quickly turn into a personal offense and a gaunt- let on the field. Unfortunately, many other people have found that email can be a kind of shield.

  • Workshop Proceedings Here
1st International Workshop on Entity-Oriented Search (EOS) Balog, K., de Vries, A.P., Serdyukov, P., Wen, J-R. Proceedings of the ACM SIGIR Workshop “Entity-Oriented Search (EOS)” held in conjunction with the 34th Annual International ACM SIGIR Conference 28 July 2011, Beijing, China ISBN: 978-94-6186-000-2 TU Delft, The Netherlands contact: [email protected], [email protected] workshop url: http://research.microsoft.com/sigir-entitysearch/ Preface Both commercial systems and the research community are displaying an increased interest in returning “objects,” “entities,” or their properties in response to a users query. While major search engines are capable of recognizing specific types of objects (e.g., locations, events, celebrities), true entity search still has a long way to go. Entity retrieval is challenging as “objects,” unlike documents, are not directly represented and need to be identified and recognized in the mixed space of structured and unstructured Web data. While standard document retrieval methods applied to textual representations of entities do seem to provide reasonable performance, a big open question remains how much influence the entity type should have on the ranking algorithms developed. This ACM SIGIR Workshop on Entity-Oriented Search (EOS) seeks to uncover the next research frontiers in entity-oriented search. It aims to provide a forum to discuss entity- oriented search, without restriction to any particular data collection, entity type, or user task. The program committee accepted 11 papers (6 selected for full and 5 selected for short oral presentation) on a wide range of topics, such as learning-to-rank based entity finding and summarization, entity relations mining, spatio-temporal entity search, entity-search in structured web data, and evaluation of entity-oriented search.

  • Apple Label Discography
Apple Label Discography 100-800 series (Capitol numbering series) Apple Records was formed by John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr in 1968. The Apple label was intended as a vehicle for the Beatles, their individual recordings and the talent they discovered. A great deal of what appeared on Apple was pretty self indulgent and experimental but they did discover a few good singers and groups. James Taylor recorded his first album on the label. Doris Troy recorded a good soul album and there are 2 albums by John Lewis and the Modern Jazz Quartet. The Beatlesque group Badfinger also issued several albums on the label, the best of which was “Straight Up”. Apple Records fell apart in management chaos in 1974 and 1975 and a bitter split between the Beatles over the management of the company. Once the lawyers got involved everybody was suing everybody else over the collapse. The parody of the Beatles rise and the disintegration of Apple is captured hilariously in the satire “All You Need Is Cash: the story of the Rutles”. The Apple label on side 1 is black with a picture of a green apple on it, black printing. The label on side 2 is a picture of ½ an apple. From November 1968 until early 1970 at the bottom of the label was “MFD. BY CAPITOL RECORDS, INC. A SUBSIDIARY OF CAPITOL INDUSTRIES INC. USA”. From Early 1970 to late 1974, at the bottom of the label is “MFD. BY APPLE RECORDS” From late 1974 through 1975, there was a notation under the “MFD.

All known copies have the A-side title misspelled “ON” instead of “IN.” The trade magazines reviewed Taylor’s debut album in their issues dated February 22, 1969. At the time there were no singles to promote the album, but “Carolina in my Mind” began gaining airplay. Capitol first prepared the single with the B-side of “Taking It In.” They appear to have had second thoughts while still preparing the record for release. This change of heart may have been due to the fact that Billboard’s review had mentioned another song, “Something’s Wrong,” as being one of the standout tracks from the LP. Prevailing wisdom says that the single was withdrawn, but it is possible that Capitol merely stopped pressing copies with the first B-side and released what they had in stock. “Carolina in My Mind”/“Something’s Wrong” Label as1dj Apple 1805 Apple label “MFD. • JAMES TAYLOR the Essential James Taylor
The Essential James Taylor erscheint am 11. September! Zu den großen und allbekannten Hits gehören Songs wie Carolina On My Mind, Sweet Baby James, Fire And Rain, Shower The People und You’ve Got A Friend, das zwar sein einziger Nummer 1-Hit blieb, ihm jedoch seinen ersten Grammy einbrachte. CD 1 ist vollständig TAYLORS Schaffen in den 70er Jahren gewidmet und enthält mit How Sweet It Is (To Be Loved By You), Handy Man, Walking Man (vom gleichnamigen 1974er Album) und Gorilla (ebenfalls ein Titeltrack für ein Album aus dem Jahr 1975) einige US-Top-5-Hits. Überdies findet man auf der Disc eine Live- Version von Steamroller, das stets eines der Konzerthighlights war. Dabei dürfen auch einige Fan-Lieblinge nicht fehlen, etwa Long Ago And Far Away von Mud Slide Slim And The Blue Horizon (1971), Something In The Way She Moves und Don’t Be Sad ‘Cause Your Sun Is Down, auf dem auch Stevie Wonder zu hören ist.
