Liz Sosland Born of Our Fathers: Patrilineal Decent, Jewish Identity, and the Development of Self ABSTRACT This study explores the ways in which disagreement within the American Jewish community regarding the legitimacy of patrilineal descent impacts the identity development of Jewish children born of Jewish fathers and non-Jewish mothers. Twelve participants who self-identify as Jewish, were born to Jewish fathers, and cannot trace their Jewish descent through matrilineal bloodlines were interviewed for this qualitative, exploratory study. Data was gathered about the ways in which this population is internally impacted by this community disagreement, specifically in regard to their development, understanding, and maintenance of self. Findings of this study indicate that there is a strong connection between the amount and quality of selfobject experiences participants could access and the quality of each individual’s Jewish identity. Those with greater selfobject access reported their Jewish identities to be of greater importance to them, and their narratives indicated greater connection to that identity. When participants did not have access to successful selfobject experiences, they appeared to be more negatively impacted by the patrilineal descent debate. The types of selfobject experiences that participants accessed reached beyond the three types delineated in self-psychology, ultimately suggesting that participants in this study have unique selfobject needs that were not included in Kohut’s original theory that focused heavily on the experiences of the majority population. Jewish law indicates that in order for a person to be born Jewish, a child must be able to trace his/her Jewish bloodline through his/her mother’s ancestry (Benvenuto, 2004). While this view differs among varied denominations of Judaism, it is one that remains powerfully controversial within the Jewish community. In the United States, the Reconstructionist and Reform movements currently acknowledge the validity of patrilineal Jewish descent; however, their doing so has created enormous disagreement within the Jewish community and confusion among Jews of patrilineal descent regarding the continuity and legitimacy of their Jewish identity. While the history of this question can be traced back thousands of years, the poignancy of the issue is garnering increasing importance in contemporary society. Interfaith marriages are on the rise in the United States and more and more children are being born of interfaith partnerships between Jewish fathers and non-Jewish mothers (Bleicher, 1999). Many of these children are being raised Jewish, despite the tenets of traditional Jewish law (Bleicher, 1999), as well as the likelihood that controversy over the legitimacy of their identities will continue passionately within Jewish discourse for years 1 to come. Consequently, these children are traversing different contexts in which the credibility of their Jewish identity, and ultimately themselves, may possibly face ongoing redefinition. Very little research exists exploring the psychological and developmental impact of this negotiation on Jewish children of non-Jewish mothers; therefore clinical social workers are likely counseling this population without substantial research on their needs or experiences. This study seeks to increase the understanding of the internal impact of these external, social experiences in an effort to explore the relationship that these issues have on one’s identity development and emergence of a cohesive self. Ultimately this research will enable clinicians, clergy, and other professionals to provide more relevant support for this population with sensitivity to the unique issues its members are facing. Very little empirical research has been conducted with a focus on this population. One study was completed by McCleary (1995), and though it did not include a statistically significant sample, it did offer some exploration of the experiences of children within the context of interfaith partnerships between Jewish fathers and non- Jewish mothers. This study found that the Jewish children involved in the research had formed strong Jewish identities as members of synagogues that were particularly welcoming of mixed married couples. The research also reported that the children viewed their experiences growing up in interfaith households positively, and that they were able to integrate the varied religious and cultural experiences of their parents cohesively. McCleary attributed this outcome to the parents’ consideration for, and participation in, each other's traditions. While this study provided a small amount of data about the experiences of children raised in interfaith households, a search of the literature

Englander and provided by The Temple Israel Men’s Club 1) After putting on your tallit, get out your arm (Yad) tefillin and say: Baruch ata Ado-nai elo-heynu melech ha-olam, asher kidshanu, b’mitzvotav v’tzivanu l’haniyach tefillin “Praised are You, Adonai our God, who rules the universe, instilling in us the holiness of mitzvot by commanding us to put on tefillin.” 2) Slide your arm tefillin up your weaker arm and tighten the loop so the box sits on the muscle of your bicep and the knot on the strap faces toward your heart. Wrap the strap once over your bicep towards you to anchor the box. 3) Wrap the strap towards you 7 times tightly, over the top of your forearm. As you wrap, count the number of wraps by using either the seven days of the week, or the verse from the Ashrei: “Potey’ach et yade’cha umas- beeah l’chol chai ratson” (7 words) then wrap the remaining strap loosely around your hand. 4) Next, hold your head (Rosh) tefillin and say: Baruch ata Ado-nai elo-heynu melech ha-olam, asher kidshanu, b’mitzvotav v’tzivanu al mitzvat tefillin “Praised are you Adonai, our God who rules the universe, instilling in us the holiness of mitzvot by giving us the mitzvah of tefillin.” 5) Place the head tefillin box on your head where your hairline is/was.     Putting the Silent Partner Back Into Partnership Minyanim Rabbi Dr. Barry Freundel Introduction Over the last few years a new phenomenon has appeared on the Jewish scene. This phenomenon referred to as “Partnership Minyanim”, claims to be Orthodox and/or halakhic, and to offer increased opportunities for women to participate in services.1 Specifically, women are allowed to serve as prayer leader (in some venues a woman is always asked to lead) for Kabbalat Shabbat—but not for Maariv on Friday night. On Shabbat morning a women may serve as Hazan(it)for Pesukei Dezmira but not for Shaharit and Musaf. So too, a girl may be asked to conclude the Shabbat morning services beginning with Ein Kelokeinu. Finally, women are given aliyot and read Torah at these services (in some places this is allowed only after the third aliyah).2 There are some of these groups that follow somewhat different structures.3 The title of this article reflects a fundamental concern about how this new development has come to the community.     Feminist Sexual Ethics Project Gail Labovitz Senior Research Analyst, Feminist Sexual Ethics Project Female Homoerotic Sexual Activity – Sources: The sources addressing female homoerotic sexual activity in rabbinic literature (link to glossary) are very few, and far less clear than those regarding sexual activity between men. There is a great deal of ambiguity in these texts as to what activities are forbidden, the consequences for women who engage in them, and the nature (that is, the source and/or the authority) of whatever prohibition does exist. Reading these sources suggests several potential reasons why rabbinic thinking on female homoerotic sexual activity is less developed than regarding male homoeroticism; these possibilities will be discussed in the course of the analysis of the texts below. Tannaitic Midrash There is no direct prohibition on female homoerotic sexual activity in the Hebrew bible, indeed, no explicit discussion of such activity at all. Biblical laws of forbidden sexual couplings (notably Leviticus 18 and 20) are generally addressed to male listeners/readers. With the exception of the prohibition against bestiality (Leviticus 18:23 and 20:15-16), in which the prohibition against women committing this act follows on the prohibition to men,1 sexual acts which do not involve male participants are not discussed. Nor do the Mishnah (link to glossary) or the Tosefta (link to glossary) discuss sexual acts between women in any way. Only one midrashic (link to glossary) text from this period addresses any form of homoeroticism between women. As midrash, that is, as a form of exegesis of scriptural text, to Leviticus 18:3, this passage thus invokes the authority of scripture for its discourse on female homoeroticism; it links marriage between two women to the practices of the Canaanites and Egyptians, which this verse and numerous others explicitly forbid, as well as to a number of other sexual/marital connections explicitly or implicitly forbidden in scripture [cite the verse?].

    Change and Evolution Stages in the Development of Judaism: A Historical Perspective As the timeline chart presented earlier demonstrates, the development of the Jewish faith and tradition which occurred over thousands of years was affected by a number of developments and events that took place over that period. As with other faiths, the scriptures or oral historical records of the development of the religion may not be supported by the contemporary archaeological, historical, or scientific theories and available data or artifacts. The historical development of the Jewish religion and beliefs is subject to debate between archeologists, historians, and biblical scholars. Scholars have developed ideas and theories about the development of Jewish history and religion. The reason for this diversity of opinion and perspectives is rooted in the lack of historical materials, and the illusive nature, ambiguity, and ambivalence of the relevant data. Generally, there is limited information about Jewish history before the time of King David (1010–970 BCE) and almost no reliable biblical evidence regarding what religious beliefs and behaviour were before those reflected in the Torah. As the Torah was only finalized in the early Persian period (late 6th–5th centuries BCE), the evidence of the Torah is most relevant to early Second Temple Judaism. As well, the Judaism reflected in the Torah would seem to be generally similar to that later practiced by the Sadducees and Samaritans. By drawing on archeological information and the analysis of Jewish Scriptures, scholars have developed theories about the origins and development of Judaism. Over time, there have been many different views regarding the key periods of the development of Judaism.

Tzitzit are tassels that hang down from the four corners of a rectangular garment, as the Torah says: "You shall put fringes on the corners of your garments."1 Why do we wear Tzitzit? The Torah explains that by doing so, "you will see it and remember all the mitzvot."2 How do the tzitzit remind us of the mitzvot? On the simple level, Tzitzit serve as the colloquial string­around­the­finger reminder.3 As we go about our daily chores, whether at work or at a ball game, Tzitzit give us an anchor to the world of spirituality. Further, the numerical value of "Tzitzit" is 600. Add to that the 8 strings and 5 knots on each corner, and you get 613 – the number of mitzvot in the Torah.4 Let's delve a bit deeper into the verse: "You will see it and remember all the mitzvot." If there are four strings on each corner, why does the Torah use the singular form "it"? "It" refers to the single blue thread on each corner prescribed by the Torah.5 The color blue is similar to the sea, which is like the clear blue sky, which is the color of the God's "heavenly throne."6 Our challenge is to make spirituality a part of daily reality. In seeing the Tzitzit, we have a tangible reminder of an incorporeal God.7 Seeing God in our lives is a progression – from recognizing his presence in mundane things like a garment, all the way to the spiritual realms ("heavenly throne").

Verbit The popular perception ofthe three major religious movements in American Juda­ ism is that they constitute a continuum of involvement in Jewish life, with Orthodox at the maximal pole, followed, in order, by Conservative and Reform. Indeed, the movements are usually named in that order rather than alphabetically or in the chro­ nological order of their formal organization. Regarding many aspects of ritual observance and traditional doctrine, the official positions ofthe movements - as these are embodied in the writings ofthe movements' leaders and in formal resolutions adopted by the respective rabbinical and congrega­ tional organizations - do in fact, constitute such a continuum, as they also do in the emphasis which they place on intensive Jewish education. On many other aspects of Jewish self-expression, however, the official mainstream positions of the movements are the same. All three movements encourage their adherents to participate in syna­ gogue services, at least on Sabbaths and holidays. All three advocate belief in God, the cultivation of religious feelings, and the transmission of Jewish values. All three postulate a special historic role for the Jewish people, and all agree that the content ofthat role is religious and ethical. All three movements (today ifnot throughout their histories, and in their mainstreams if not unanimously) recognize the special impor­ tance ofthe State of Israel in Jewish life, and all three assert the special character and importance of the Sabbath, even as they differ over its proper celebration.

They would be put out of the main house and moved to special quarters, when they had their period, and would be required to perform certain rituals and actions before returning. This is not how it is described in the Torah and this is not the meaning behind the Jewish Laws of Niddah. Judaism has a concept of Tamei and Tahor. While translators might try to say it means impurity and purity, there is no evidence to that. In actuality, Tumaah is something that if attained, one cannot eat Trumah and one cannot go to certain holy places, such as in the Temple. The most common sources of Tumaah come from a woman who has her period and a person being in proximity to a dead body. There is a full Seder of Mishnayot dedicated to these laws. We consider these laws as Chukim, meaning we do not completely understand the concepts and instead, we take the Torah’s word for it. No one is impure, no one is dirty, no one is bad. We have specific instructions for specific times within our routines.

    Ari Z. Zivotofsky Rabbi Zivotofsky is a professor of neuroscience at Bar Ilan University. MATRILINEAL DESCENT: A BACKGROUND CHECK s is well known, Jewish affi liation from birth is determined matrilin- eally. That is, the offspring of a Jewess and a non-Jew is Jewish, while A the child of a Jewish man and a non-Jewish woman is non-Jewish. This is the unquestioned practice used today by all halakhically conscious Jews. However, from a historical perspective, while the child of a non-Jewish woman was never considered Jewish, regarding a Jewish woman’s child from a non-Jewish man the situation was far from monolithic. Examining the his- tory of the halakha is useful for clarifying the nature and strength of these traditions against recent challenges, as well as for revealing residual effects of the long-ago debates.1 The need to determine affi liation (religious, tribal, national, etc.) of a child arises in cases where the mother and father have different back- grounds.     Chapter 3 MATERNITY MATTERS rs Bloom has served Jewish Manchester as a doula for decades,1 Mbut she told me the act of supporting women through child- birth is part of a much deeper legacy in Judaism that goes ‘back to the time in Egypt’. Like many of the doulas and midwives I met in Manchester, Mrs Bloom framed her role in relation to Shifrah and Puah, the legendary Hebrew midwives (Hameyaldot Ha’ivriot),2 who hold a revered place in the Torah for making a vow to birth the enslaved social body at great risk to their own lives: The king of Egypt spoke to the Hebrew midwives, one of whom was named Shifrah and the other Puah, saying, “when you deliver the Hebrew women, look at the birthstool: if it is a boy, kill him; if it is a girl, let her live.” The midwives, fearing God, did not do as the king of Egypt had told them; they let the boys live. So the king of Egypt summoned the midwives and said to them, “why have you done this thing, letting the boys live?” The midwives said to Pharaoh, “Because the Hebrew women are not like the Egyptian women: they are vigorous. Before the midwife can come to them, they have given birth”. And God dealt well with the midwives; and the people multiplied and increased greatly.
