I don’t believe anyone really appreciates how Be Sure to Check much work they did (and often do for other trials). AKC has just announced the instigation of a new Agility Course Test which is open to all dogs and which is designed to introduce the dog and handler to the agility ring and basic agility obstacles and courses. Act 1 is the most basic while ACT 2 is a little more advanced, introducing more obstacles and a slightly longer course.

Any dog that is 15 months or older and has not earned any agility title is eligible to participate. The dog need not be registered (it can be registered on the day of the event) although for the title to take effect, it needs to be registered either as an All-American or a breed. This can be done after the actual title is earned. Dogs without a registration number will be issued a temporary one. Please not that you do NOT have to have an ACT 1 title in order to enter ACT 2.

To obtain the ACT 1, the dog needs to run a course or 10-12 obstacles at any height (4 inches to 24 inches or whatever height you choose). Obstacles will include a 5’ A-Frame, table, jumps (no spread jumps), and open tunnels. The dog must complete the entire course in 60 seconds with a score of 85. No dropped bars, no missed contacts, no more than 3 attempts to complete any obstacle, no more than three wrong courses are allowed. The dog must earn 2 qualifying legs and will receive an ACT1 title and certificate plus any prizes and/or ribbons offered by the Club.

The ACT 2 title requires that the dog run a course at any height with 11-13 obstacles. These can include a 5’ A-Frame, teeter, dogwalk (allowed), table, jumps, 1 spread jump, open tunnels and weaves. Use of the closed tunnel has been suspended by AKC for the foreseeable future. The course must be completed in 70 seconds with the same requirements as in the ACT1 test as to contacts, dropped bars, etc.

The ACT 1 and ACT 2 titles can be accomplished in one day provided the offering event provides 2 runs for each title on that day. Dogs must be AKC registered either as a ‘breed’ or an ‘All-American’ in order to achieve a physical title certificate and have the title printed after the dog’s name.

This event is aimed at kicking off a dog/handler’s Agility career and to encourage the sport of agility and Join SDOC’s to help the dog and handler prepare for regular agility events. ACT competitors will learn how to enter YAHOO! group: an agility trial, what is expected of dogs and handlers at agility trials and how to do some of the jobs that help agility trials run.
