Furthermore, Lemonade centers black life while presenting mainstream audiences with poetry and avant-garde imagery that challenge dominant views of black womanhood. Using theorists bell hooks, Stuart Hall, Patricia Hill- Collins and Audre Lorde, among others, I argue that Beyoncé’s work challenges the understanding of artistic production while simultaneously fitting within a long tradition of black feminist cultural production. -

Afropolitanism for .lac1 7omen: Se)ual %dentit& and Coming to Voice in Chimamanda "go3i Adichie2s Americanah Caroline Lyle Leipzig, Germany Abstract: In discussing Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie’s award-winning novel Americanah, this article aims to expand Taiye Selasi’s concept of Afropolitanism. This term holds that Africans of the world “must form an identity along at least three dimensions: national, racial, cultural— with subtle tensions in between,” and my article proposes to include a sexual identity category. Considering the ongoing racist stigmatization of black sexuality in Western societies, I want to suggest that Selasi’s conceptualization of Afropolitanism, while potentially open to expansion, is currently incomplete. It is crucial for female Afropolitans to form a racialized sexual identity as well. Drawing on black sexuality scholarship as well as insights regarding theories of intersectionality, I argue that through the detailed exploration of the protagonist Ifemelu’s sexual identity, Americanah broadens the concept of Afropolitan identity construction for black heterosexual women. Ultimately, the novel insinuates that becoming a full subject is only possible when female racialized sexual experiences are consciously lived through and confronted, so that the voices of female Afropolitans can emerge. n her latest book, Dear Ijeawele, Or a Feminist Manifesto in Fifteen Suggestions,1 Nigerian author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie comments on her Ireasons for advocating publicly for feminism and gender equality: [A] writer had accused me of being ‘angry,’ as though ‘being angry’ were something to be ashamed of. Of course I am angry. I am angry about racism. I am angry about sexism. But I recently came to the realisation that I am angrier about sexism than I am about racism. -

It looks, in particular, at Nigerian author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie’s 2013 novel Americanah and her famous TED Talk, “The Danger of a Single Story.” In the latter, she warns against telling a single story about Africans, one that often involves pain, trauma, and poverty; Adichie’s warning is also especially relevant to a critique of stereotypical conceptualizations of African American suffering. Americanah provides a new Black narrative and a new definition of Blackness, one that tells a story focused on romantic love (Black joy) more than the single story of pain or trauma (Black suffering). -

It is confronted with the predicament of being, on the one hand, highly institutionalized and canonized, while on the other hand being hijacked by market forces as a new, fashionable commodity. The first aspect refers to the widespread insertion of postcolonial courses, novels, and films in the curriculum, with the associated mushrooming of conferences, professional associations, and specialized centres that propose the divulgation and further promotion of the field. The second aspect deals with the postcolonial object as such, cultural products, artefacts, events, and affects that are exchanged for the purpose of monetary gain with the special distinction of having a postcolonial tint to them. So we have to think of this field as an area of contestation and political intervention in the operations of empires and their legacy, but also as a field that through its institutionalization and commercialization is part of the very neoliberal model that stems from colonial profit and dependency.
