Secretary’s Report

I would like to present the Association’s 23rd Annual Report to all members of the Moore Park South East Cricket Association. The joint 1st Grade Competition involving four teams from MPSECA and four teams from Churches Cricket NSW completed its 3rd season and for the second season in a row the Clovelly Club defeated Castle Hill Wesley in the Grand Final. I would like to thank all teams participating in the Joint Competition for making it a strong viable competitive 1st Grade competition. The MPSECA competition for 2017/2018 consisted of a total of 20 teams competing over four grades. Apart from the 1st Grade Final won by Clovelly, the remaining grades were won by Clovelly (3) in 2nd Grade, Rusty Shovel in 3rd Grade and Souths Juniors in 4th Grade. The Club Championship was taken out by Clovelly Cricket Club for the 7th successive season, a mighty effort. Congratulations to all our premiership winners. The 2017/2018 season saw the Association drop a further 2 teams from the previous season and forced us to play a combined 2nd/3rd Grade competition, which was far from ideal. It has become apparent that we are unlikely to attract few if any new teams to the Association and our aim therefore must be to strengthen and grow our existing clubs. If individual clubs can try and build on what they have by holding onto existing players and being active in the recruitment of new players then that is what the Association and Clubs should concentrate on to grow the number of teams in the competition. The Association will also be looking at the options available in expanding the Joint Competition and looking into possible mergers with other Associations somewhere down the track. The representative season saw our Martin Shield team lose all three of their round matches but each game we proved to be more than competitive and the experience gained by some junior members of the team will prove beneficial in future seasons. In our annual match against Bathurst, this year played at Jubilee Oval Glebe, we won once again to make it the fourth victory in a row. My thanks to our Patron Mr. Harry Solomons and Kingsgrove Sports Centre, The Randwick Club, the South Sydney Junior Rugby League Football Club and Kookaburra for their ongoing support and sponsorship of the Association. I would also like to thank all fellow Board Members, club delegates, umpires, scorers, volunteers and players who make up the competition and make it a success.

Yours in cricket

David Power Secretary

President’s Report

The 2017/2018 season marked the completion of 23 seasons since Moore Park, South Sydney and the Catholic Cricket Association joined to form the Moore Park South East Cricket Association. I am delighted to have overseen as your President the past 23 seasons and report that whilst we may not have had significant growth last season we have concluded a season that produced competitive cricket in all grades, maintained our team numbers and provided a competitive competition in all grades. In 1st grade season 2017/2018 saw the third year of our partnership with the Churches Cricket Association in a combined first grade competition. This partnership has fostered a strong relationship between the two Associations. The combined 1st grade competition this year saw Clovelly as Minor Premiers meet Castle Hill Wesley for the second year in succession in a tense Grand Final with Clovelly the victors in a match that seesawed throughout the day. My thanks to all teams in the combined competition, your commitment to this venture ensures that players are getting the standard of cricket that can only enhance each individual’s talents in our game. My thanks to the delegates from both Associations for their tireless efforts in putting together a format that provides a competitive competition for both Associations teams. The lower grades in 2017/2018 saw three grades formed. A combined second and third grade was established with 10 teams. At the completion of all rounds the top four played off for second grade premiership honors whilst the next 5-8 position teams played for third grade premiership honours. Grade two final saw two Clovelly sides fight out the premiership with Clovelly (3) led by Des Williams upsetting Louie Pengue’s Clovelly (2) in a tense final played in a competitive spirit. Well done Clovelly (3), commiserations Clovelly (2) a great effort all round to the strong Clovelly club. Grade three saw Rusty Shovel take on Souths Juniors with Minor Premiers Souths succumbing to Nic Cola’s Rusty Shovel, well done Rusty, Premiers now two years in a row, commiserations to Souths Juniors who played well throughout the season. The 4th Grade Premiership saw Souths Juniors take on Botany. Souths who were runners up the previous year to Rusty Shovel, finally broke through and won the PREMIERSHIP, well done Andrew Plum and the team. Commiserations to Botany United led by Gordon McClelland in Dave Power’s absence due to injury sustained in the lead up to the finals. The Association this year decided to extend Man of the Match awards to all Grand Finals following the Matthew Trenear initial award in 4th grade the previous season. My congratulations to the following winners of Grand Final Man of the Match awards: 1st Grade – Michael Dunlea; 2nd Grade - Rohan Stocker; 3rd Grade - Arslan Khalid; 4th Grade – Smithy Goodman My congratulations to all other individual winners listed in this report. Following the passing of Tim Booth in 2017 the Board decided in his memory to present annually the TIM BOOTH AWARD FOR CONTRIBUTION TO CRICKET. This award recognizes the contribution of the late Tim Booth made to our Association in particular as Secretary, Treasurer and Board member for a number of years. The inaugural winner, Ipokraty Giitsidis from the Botany United Club is a very worthy winner and has made significant contribution both on and off the field over many years for his Club and the Association. The Associations representative teams took on a new look this season following retirements, unavailability and injury issues to key players. Dave Power volunteered to take on the organization of our representative team with a view of rebuilding a squad over a period of time. Whilst we were eliminated prior to the finals series there were some encouraging signs for future seasons. I believe we have the basis of a side that will be competitive as the players mould into a competitive unit. This year saw the fifteenth year of the annual Plank Match verses Bathurst. Bathurst travelled to Sydney and played a very competitive game at Jubilee Oval. MPSECA were victors on the day with skipper Nic Lochner putting in a match winning performance and being named man of the match. My thanks to all those players who gave up there time to represent our

8

Association as well as Dave Power, who took on the overall responsibility of our rep season and Nic Lochner our skipper. For an association to be successful, it needs support. I would like to thank a number of people for their support in season 2017/2018: Kookaburra Sponsorship: This sponsorship is used directly to assist in the ever increasing ground fees set by the landlords of our grounds. I am pleased to report this year saw the start of a new sponsorship deal with significant increase in funds from KOOKABURRA. My thanks to all at Kookaburra for their ongoing support. Mr. Harry Solomons, Managing Director Kingsgrove Sports: Harry is not only our Patron but a long time supporter of park cricket in the South Sydney area having not only played many games in the former South Sydney Cricket Association but also represented that Association. Harry this year will realise a dream when he puts on the BAGGY GREEN in August and represents Australia in the over 70s international tournament to be played in England. Well done Harry you deserve your selection, you are truly a credit to our game. Harry has a true understanding of Association cricket and what it takes to be a successful association and our success is helped by his support both at club and Association level. I thank Harry and the team at Kingsgrove Sports for their support and I urge all clubs to visit Kingsgrove Sports for all your teams and individual cricket requirements. South Sydney Juniors Club: To the Board of Souths Juniors my thanks for your continued support and the Association looks forward to continuing our relationship for many years to come. The Randwick Club: To Bill Clegg and his staff our thanks for your financial support. We look forward to a prosperous partnership in the future. Centennial Parklands, Bayside Council, Randwick Council: Our thanks to these organisations and their staff who ensure our grounds are maintained each week. MPSECA Umpires: My thanks to the umpires who each Saturday control our fixtures. A warm welcome to a new addition to our umpire ranks this season Sean Benson. A special thank you to Dave Power who is tasked with organising and training our umpires. MPSECA Board Management: This year saw the Board strengthened with the addition of Demi Kavaratzis and David Waterson. A very warm welcome to both members whom I am sure will benefit from their experience as Board members. My thanks to all Board members for your assistance in running the Association. To our Vice President and Secretary Dave Power whose workload gets bigger each year I say sincerely thank you. Members are lucky we have an administrator as committed and dedicated to his roles as Dave but and our appreciation must never be forgotten. On behalf of us all thanks Dave. MPSECA Affiliated Clubs and Players: My sincere thanks for the support given by clubs and particularly the office bearers of our clubs whom I am aware spend many voluntary hours organizing their club each week. To all players and club supporters whom without you we do not have an Association, my thanks for your continued support of this great Association. In concluding this report I must make mention of recent media attention in world cricket and ensure all members that your Board is absolutely committed to ensuring all members act and play in the spirit of the game of cricket. Whilst our numbers were down slightly last year the Board of Australia’s oldest park cricket Association is always looking at ways of attracting new teams as well as possibilities like the current first grade partnership with Churches to give members opportunities to play more competitive cricket and advance their cricketing skills. I commend this report to the members and look forward to Season 2018/2019. Paul Brien President

Umpires Report

On behalf of the Board of Management I would like to thank all the umpires for their dedication and assistance in making the 2017/2018 season a success. Umpiring can be a very difficult job and their position and decisions should be respected by all captains and players in the Association. I would like to personally thank all the umpires who have officiated in this Association during the course of the 2017/2018 cricket season: Leigh Martin, Greg Leslie, Masud Rana, John Walden, David Ward, D M Motiur Rahaman, Sean Benson, Michael Azzopardi and Jahid Reza. We hope you will all be available to raising the finger once again for the upcoming 2018/2019 season. Thanks once again for your tremendous assistance.

Representative Season Report

The 2017/2018 Representative Season was a tough one for our young Martin Shield team. Although we were highly competitive we did lose all three of our round matches, however the experience gained by the younger members of the team will be a huge benefit in the years to come. The MPSECA’s annual match against Bathurst was played in Sydney this year and it saw the home team triumph for the fourth successive year.

Martin Shield Round 1 – MPSECA v Northern Suburbs Round 1 saw us play Northern Suburbs away and we were sent into bat after losing the toss. After a steady start we lost 3 quick wickets to be 3/35 but we were able to rebuild and at 4/105 we were in a sound position to build a good total but another collapse saw us slump to 8/106 before a late innings fight back got us to a respectable total of 136. Top scorers were Nathan Power 44, Ryan Power 18 not out and Nic Lochner 14. In reply to our total we made Northern Suburbs fight all the way, at one stage we had them 5/83 before they rallied to win in a close match making 7/137. All bowlers used claimed wickets with Luke O’Sullivan taking 2/37, Ryan Power 2/24, Nithin Shamraju 1/25, Jack Boulton 1/20 and James Hughes-Smallwood 1/18.

Martin Shield Round 2 – MPSECA v Fairfield-Liverpool Round 2 we were up against Fairfield-Liverpool away and this time we won the toss and decided to bat first. We lost a couple of early wickets to be 3/33 but recovered and fought our way to a total of 159 all out. Leading the run scoring this match was Nic Lochner 38, he was supported by Nathan Power 23, Yves Silveira 16 and Luke O’Sullivan 15. The Fairfield-Liverpool batsmen proved hard to dislodge as we only claimed 4 wickets in the run chase despite some hard work from our bowlers. takers were James Hughes-Smallwood 2/46, Luke O’Sullivan 1/43 and Nithin Shamraju 1/21.

MPSECA Martin Shield Team 2017/2018

11

Martin Shield Round 3 – MPSECA v Bankstown The final match saw us play Bankstown at Jubilee Oval Glebe with Bankstown electing to bat first. Some excellent bowling and fielding saw us have Bankstown reeling at 9/151 but a last wicket stand saved them and took them to a total of 9/202 after 50 overs. Jack Boulton led the way with the bowling taking 3/32, also among the wickets were Luke O’Sullivan 2/45, Mart Spruit 2/40, Nithin Shamraju 1/14 and James Hughes- Smallwood 1/30. In reply we only managed a total of 110 despite Damien Peters top scoring with a fine 54.

The Plank – MPSECA v Bathurst

Our last representative fixture of the season was our annual match against Bathurst, this year we were at our home ground of Jubilee Oval Glebe for the match played on Sunday 28th January 2018. MPSECA Captain Nic Lochner won the toss and sent Bathurst into bat first with Ryan Power and Kyle James opening the bowling for MPSECA. Ryan got an early breakthrough but then Bathurst put on a solid second wicket partnership to take them to 1/94 before we had a double breakthrough with Troy Isemonger and Nic Lochner picking up wickets to have them 3/94. Another fight back took them up to 3/130 before Nic snared another 3 quick wickets to leave Bathurst 6/136. James Hughes-Smallwood came into the attack to claim a couple of wickets, Matt Fortuin grabbed one and Nic another to have Bathurst all out for 192. Final bowling figures were Nic Lochner 5/32, James Hughes-Smallwood 2/27, Ryan Power 1/15, Troy Isemonger 1/29, Matt Fortuin 1/21, Kyle James 0/35 and Thomas Hourn 0/27. In reply Louie Pengue and Justin Corner opened the batting for MPSECA and did well to get the score to 45 off 11 overs before Louie fell for 24. David Waterson then joined Justin in the middle and another strong partnership was formed until Justin was dismissed for 34 with the score on 98. Thomas Hourn came and went for a duck but this drew Nic Lochner out to bat and the score moved to 120 before Watto went for an impressive 44. Dominic Greensill fell for 5 to leave the game poised at 5/136 but James Salakas 12 and Troy Isemonger 14 not out combined with Nic Lochner 40 not out to get us over the line at 6/196 in the 44th over. The Man of the Match award went to Nic Lochner for a fine all round performance.

Treasurer’s Report

This financial period for the association saw a similar bottom line situation to the prior year. Regular factors such as the surge in ground hire fees and the Board’s decision to not match team’s fees played a part in the shortfalls not being recouped. Due to the previous use of legacy accounting system, the Board approved the use of a new accounting system which will incur an annual fee of $500. A reduction to 20 teams meant there was a lower income for the association which did not tie back to the grounds we had booked at the beginning of the season (resulting in a spare ground). The Board has agreed that the teams’ registration fees will increase to meet these significant increases in costs. The Board has also agreed to consider the costings of unsuccessful campaigns such as the funding of the representative team without a sponsor. The Board also expects the biannual Bathurst trip to incur costs of approximately $2k. The bottom line of $13,726 loss is not ideal but MPSECA’s $41k of assets has kept the association afloat. There will be major changes considered for the 2018-19 as the Association looks to return to a positive financial year result.
