Annual Report 2020 - 2021 Kathak Kendra, New Delhi [National Institute of Kathak Dance] K A T H A K K E N D R A [NATIONAL INSTITUTE OF KATHAK DANCE] ANNUAL REPORT 2020 - 2021 KATHAK KENDRA, NEW DELHI [NATIONAL INSTITUTE OF KATHAK DANCE] Annual Report of the Programme Section 01st April, 2020 till 31st March 2021 Dance and Music is the ultimate celebration. It is a way of celebrating our past experiences and it is always pushing us to new levels of experience. Every generation of Indians can relate to the magic of classical Indian dance and music as a fresh new connection to life. Due to the worldwide pandemic, COVID 2019, the working of the Kathak Kendra, New Delhi has been a bit different from every other year in the past. Instead of closing down its operations making the pandemic an excuse, Kathak Kendra on the contrary celebrated even more and tried new mediums keeping in mind the safety measures and adhering to the COVID 2019 guidelines. Kathak Kendra kept a very busy schedule this year reaching out to more and more people through various online mediums. While on one hand it presented performances and workshops by many esteemed and established artists, on the other it also gave opportunities to many young and upcoming artists, making it a point to support them during their formative years. The Kathak Kendra presented online Kathak training sessions, sharing of personal experiences through lec-dems, presentations of Kathak archives etc. through various online platforms and were also premiered live on the facebook page of Sangeet Natak Akademi. Many concerts were organised in the Swami Vivekanand Auditorium where hundreds of artists have participated (adhering to the COVID19 guidelines) and given their presentations. Finally this year ended with a week-long Holi celebration marking the 75 years of Indian Independence with the festival Swadheenta ke Rang, Phalgun ke Sang. Political activist, actor, playwright and poet, Safdar had been deeply committed, like so many young men and women of his generation, to the anti-imperialist, secular and egalitarian values that were woven into the rich fabric of the nation’s liberation struggle. Safdar moved closer to the Left, eventually joining the CPI(M), to pursue his goal of being part of a social order worthy of a free people. Tragically, it would be of the manner of his death at the hands of a politically patronised mafia that would single him out. The spontaneous, nationwide wave of revulsion, grief and resistance aroused by his brutal murder transformed him into a powerful symbol of the very values that had been sought to be crushed by his death. Such a death belongs to the revolutionary martyr. 6 PUBLICATIONS Safdar was thirty-four years old when he died.

  • Pushtimargiya Sangeet
Pushtimargiya Sangeet 6.1 Pushtimarg in nut shell Shri Nathji, literally the "Husband of the Goddess of Wealth", has a magnificent mansion in the Rajasthani town of Nathadwara, India. This sumptuous 17th Century mansion serves as a seat of the Pushti Marg, a Vaishnav sect founded by MahaPrabhu Shri Vallabhacharyaji in the 15th Century. Expounding his philosophy of "Shudhadvaita", the great Acharya set up the Pushti Marg, the Path of Grace, with divine blessing in Gokul. Vallabhacharyaji wrote a number of great Sanskrit works to expound his philosophy, and was honoured as an "Acharya" by the South Indian Emperor Krshnadevrai of Vijaynagar1. The sect flourished under his son Shri Vitthalnathji (popularly called Shri Gusaiji), and soon adopted the graceful lifestyle of the 16th Century royal courts of North India. He introduced raag, bhog and shringar to the traditional methods of seva. Gusaiji ordained a complex set of rituals to be followed throughout the year for the comfort and pleasure of the Lord. Daily and festive routines were set up by Shri Gusaiji to make sure the haveli functioned efficiently even when he was touring India to spread the message of Pushti Marg2. During Mughal ruler Auranzeb's vicious anti-Hindu policies, the Goswamis of Vraj judged the area to be too dangerous to live and practice their faith. Apart from GokulNathji and his descendants, other Goswamis immigrated to various parts of Rajputana - the only secure Hindu controlled area in North India at the time. Over the centuries, these Nidhis have come to reside in various parts of India, some even returning to Vraj.

Ashish Mohan Khokar INDIAN DANCE TODAY. Indian classical dance traditions have been borne out of a sense of propitiation of the divinity. A certain spiritual content has always been its mainstay. It has also been essentially the art of a soloist, ex- cept in dance-theatre forms. Over two thousand unbroken years, it has grown to become the longest continuous dance culture, afford- ing an interesting insight into man and his relationship to stage in general and dance art, in particular. Its classical nature comes through by a set of code of grammar, content and concept. Thus, if in one form, the knees are to be bent while performing and a half-sitting position maintained all through, then it cannot be altered. The position of hands, the use of eyes, neck, torso and feet, all go towards making dance units, which be- come strings of movements, through which individual characteristics and a grammar is set which makes each form distinct and thus, with age and tradition, classical.
