A Blast! by Dave Altman ACE Western Pennsylvania Co-Hosted the Blue Streak Blast on June 6, 2011 to Celebrate the Return of Blue Streak at Conneaut Lake Park A December to Remember (page 5) Vol. 21, No. 3 September 2011 The FUNOFFICIAL Newsletter of ACE Western Pennsylvania Blue Streak Blast, Conneaut Lake Park A Blast! By Dave Altman ACE Western Pennsylvania co-hosted the Blue Streak Blast on June 6, 2011 to celebrate the return of Blue Streak at Conneaut Lake Park. The 71 in attendance were treated to an all day ride pass plus one ride on Blue Streak, which now requires an additional charge. The response for the optional ACE cruise on the Kaylee Belle was so successful that a second cruise was added to accommodate the 47 “lake farers.” Martin Valt, ACE’s Regional Rep for England, traveled the farthest to attend. His “prize” was to finally take his first ride onBlue Streak after several previous unsuccessful visits to the park. Jason Hammond was the winner of the golf tournament played on the miniature golf course which just had been recarpeted the day before. Unfortunately for the attendees, the restaurant at the Hotel Conneaut was closed due to two wedding receptions being held that day. However, that is good business for the hotel. Many were able to find substinance at The Beach Club and photo by Chase Fiore continued on page 7 Mid-Summer Scream, Waldameer by Tony Colega A Scream! Think of Erie, Pennsylvania in the winter and you think of snow….lots of photo by Matt Adler snow… “lake-effect snow!” But, in the summer, when you think of Erie, you think of Waldameer Park & Water World (if you are an ACE member). Erie was anything but cold and snowy on Saturday, July 30, 2011 as members from ACE Western Pennsylvania and Great Ohio Coaster Club turned out for the annual Mid-Summer Scream event. The “usual suspects” were present from western Pennsylvania and Ohio along with assorted other states including one person who came all the way from Texas to enjoy the day at Waldameer! Because it was well over 80 degrees by 11 a.m., a number of attendees decided to head over to Water World to cool off and enjoy the waterslides (liquid roller coasters, if you will). In case you’ve never been there, Water World is one of the best waterparks in Pennsylvania. There is a nice variety of continued on page 5 A Tradition! KennyKon XXII, Kennywood by Lee Ann Draud photo by Dave Hahner KennyKon fun starts near the park entrance, even before the event begins, even before registration begins—even before the registration crew can set up! Time to greet old friends, figure out who’s got the badges, look for the mystery person who was supposed to open the building and laugh a lot about it all. Finally, the registration windows open and lines form. On a bright, sunny Sunday at the very end of July, 215 attendees made their way to Kennywood in West Mifflin from 16 states and Canada to register for a day of riding, anniversaries, contests, and fun with friends at America’s favorite traditional amusement park. The day began not on Kennywood’s remarkable woodies but on two of its unique steel coasters, with first-ever morning ERT on Sky Rocket and also Phantom’s Revenge, which was celebrating its tenth anniversary. continued on page 4 The Fun Times Mail Bag I just finished reading my June 2011 issue of The Fun Times and decided that I had to drop you a note to say thank you for continuing to keep me informed via this publication.
