Purposes and Procedures

The Teacher Education Council (TEC) includes P-12 teachers and administrators, Arts and Sciences faculty and administrators, and Teacher Education faculty and administrators. The purpose of the Council is to aid in the design and review of curricula, requirements, and assessments related to undergraduate and graduate teacher education programs. Analyses of assessments, such as the Teacher Intern evaluations, exit surveys, Praxis tests, and the Survey of First Year Teachers, are routinely shared with the TEC. The advice and recommendations of the council are carefully considered by the Dean, Associate Dean, Assistant Dean, Director of the Office of Clinical/Field-Based Instruction and Licensure (OCFBI), College of Education department heads, and are shared as needed with other entities, such as the CAEP Committee and the Undergraduate Education Advisory Committee. Members of the TEC also meet with the Board of Examiners during CAEP site visits (next visit: spring 2022). The ultimate goal of the TEC is to aid in the design and enhancement of the programs that prepare P-12 candidates.

In addition, members provide ongoing program review and feedback through service on the College of Education Box Curriculum Council, which meets monthly. Included as ex-officio members of the Box Council, along with the Associate Dean of the College of Education, the Assistant Dean of the College of Education, and the Director of the OCFBI, are The Associate Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences and P-12 practitioners from the TEC; the practitioners serve on a rotating basis. The Box Council reviews curricular proposals and makes recommendations to the Dean regarding program and course modifications and additions.

The TEC is chaired by the Associate Dean of the College of Education and co-chaired by the Assistant Dean of the College of Education, and the Director of Office of Clinical/Field-Based Instruction, Licensure, & Outreach (OCFBI). Members of the TEC are selected in a variety of ways: Arts and Sciences faculty who represent each of the secondary teacher education content areas are typically recommended by their respective department heads; College of Education faculty representing the various teacher education majors and concentrations are recommended by department heads, the Associate Dean, or the Director of OCFBI; practitioners are recommended by the Associate Dean, principals or superintendents in collaborating schools, or by the Director of OCFBI. At least one practitioner is selected to represent each teacher education major/concentration. TEC members serve two-year, renewable terms.
