    TUE ])1~TRIIlUTlON A:KD EUOLUGY OF ARUM NEGLECTUM 287 THE DISTRIBUTION AND ECOLOGY OF ARUM NEGLECTUM IN SOUTHERN ENGLAND By C. T. PRIME, O. BUCKLE AND J. D. LOVIS PART 1. KENT, SUSSEX,H~TS. AND DORSET Arum neglectum (Towns.) Ridley was first recorded in the British Isles by A. Hambrough in 1854 when it was identified as A. italicum Miller. Subsequently Townsend (1883) distinguished it from A. italicum as var. neglectum and as recently as 1938 it was re-described by Ridley as a separate species. The plant is present as a native in southern and western England and northern lirance but its status and distribution on· the Continent are very inadequately known. A. italicum (sensu stricto) probably does not occur in England as. a native, but it has been cultivated,· particularly in the south west and it is found occasionally as an escape. THE DISTRIBUTION OF ARUM NEGLECTUM A. neglectum has been recorded with certainty from ten vice­ counties and the records from the more easterly of these will be treated in detail. EAST AND WEST KENT (Vice-counties 15 and 16) Hanbury and Marshall (1899) give six localities for Kent, but it is very doubtful if the plant has ever occurred in the county [see Prime (1954), also Melvill (1888) and Briggs (1888)]. A. italicum (sensu stricto) has been recorded from Westwell near Ashford (v.c. 15) but in this locality it is an undoubted garden escape. Woodland, heath, hills, views, villages, pubs In Brief This is a walk in the hilly parts of Hampshire taking in several of the interestingly-shaped hills called “hangers” with lovely woodland and memorable countryside. The route is fairly dry underfoot but boots are recommended. Long trousers are required as this walk is not nettle free and the the undergrowth may be thick in summer along the early sections. There are some fields and stiles that may be difficult for a large dog. ? The walk begins at Kingsley Pond , Hampshire, postcode GU35 9ND , near the Cricketers inn and the village shop. From the car park near the Cricketers , cross over the B3004 road onto a track opposite the inn, beside a farm, marked as a footpath. Follow the track past a sign PANTERA and a large metal gate (or over the adjacent stile if the gate is closed). As the track bends left keep straight ahead on a grassy path between a wire fence and a rope fence.

    The Jettens of Iping William Jetin married Elizabeth Newman in 1714 at Trotton in Sussex Deeds exist showing that he, jointly with George Newman (possibly his father-in-law), both husbandmen, rented property in Trotton in 1719 and assigned away the lease in 1760 (see Appendix 1). William’s origins are yet to be identified. Daughter Elizabeth was baptised at Tuxlith (an ancient church at the north end of Trotton parish) in 1718. Sons William, John and Thomas followed (a full family tree can be found in Appendix 2). Trotton Dec 1720 Trotton Dec 1722 Trotton 1725 It is not known what happened to Thomas. John died in infancy. William married and had three daughters at Easebourne. Easebourne 1743 Easebourne Their subsequent fate is is not known (but see marriage in 1810 below). Elizabeth had three illegitimate children. Trotton 1744 Trotton 1747 Trotton 1753 The descendents of John can be found in “The Jettens of Surrey and Hampshire”. Henry Jetten and Merey/Mercy Smith of Terwick parish were married at Iping in 1775. Sons Henry, Thomas and John were baptised there in 1783, 1791 and 1794 respectively. Henry and Merey/Mercy also had daughters Jane (1778: d 1835), Elizabeth (1781), Ann (1785; d 1786), Sarah (1787; d 1787) and Martha (1788). James and Mary Jetten were baptised at Iping in 1799 (probably twins) and Lucy 1802, seemingly also attributable to Henry and Mary Jetten (although possibly ‘Mercy’). Henry Jetten (1783) and John Jetten (1794) Henry junior married Mary Budd at Trotton in 1808, his sister Jane being one of the witnesses.
