The Avett Brothers made mainstream waves with their 2009 major label debut, “I and Love and You,” landing at No. 16 on the Billboard Top 200 and garnering critical acclaim from Rolling Stone, Paste, The New York Times, Los Angeles Times and Time. 2012 saw “The Carpenter” hit No. 4 on the Billboard Top 200, while People, USA Today, and American Songwriter lauded the album. Photos by Geoff Davidian Smaller venues offer sober, cleaner, family-friendly chance to see popular acts By GEOFF DAVIDIAN ILKESBORO, North Carolina – It was Sunday morning and Dan Fedoryka looked every bit a Baptist preacher in his white suit as he stepped out of the Church Bus, walked a hundred or so yards over a worn path and mounted the raised platform where he would perform a ritual that has become familiar in this Appalachian community. The sun was shining and it was already in the 80s when the 30-year-old former student at a Ukrainian seminary slipped off his jacket, folded it and placed it neatly on the back of a chair, rolled up his sleeves and turned to the energetic congregation. Then Fedoryka strapped on his guitar and jumped over some speakers to join his brother Alexander, childhood friend Josef Crosby and Mike Ounallah as the band Scythian jumped right into its third performance in two days at MerleFest, the annual gathering in Wilkesboro, NC, to worship and be baptized in quintessential American music. MerleFest began 22 years ago as a celebration of traditional American folk and bluegrass music but after more than two decades, it has opened its arms to a broader slice of regional and national talent. The event, dedicated to the memory of Eddy Merle Watson and to raise money for the Wilkes Community College, was held this year from April 28 to May 1 on the college campus.

Abstract approved:_____________________________________________________ Ryann Reynolds-McIlnay The rise of digital streaming has largely impacted the way the average listener consumes music. Consequentially, while the role of album art has evolved to meet the changes in music technology, it is hard to measure the effect of digital streaming on modern album art. This research seeks to determine whether or not graphic design still plays a role in marketing information about the music, such as its genre, to the consumer. It does so through two studies: 1. A computer visual analysis that measures color dominance of an image, and 2. A mixed-design lab experiment with volunteer participants who attempt to assess the genre of a given album. Findings from the first study show that color scheme models created from album samples cannot be used to predict the genre of an album. Further findings from the second theory show that consumers pay a significant amount of attention to album covers, enough to be able to correctly assess the genre of an album most of the time.

Weekly July 23,2008 by Carole Perkins An antiquated yellow lab and a frisky Doberman Pincher are vociferous escorts to the front steps of the modest, wooden house secured a towering brick chimney standing sentinel where Jim and Susie Avett, parents of Scott and Seth. Their living room is an humble assortment of the lares and penants of Jim and Susie’s forty years together .Scott’s oil portraits of he and his wife adorn the wall perpendicular to bookshelf lined with Jim’s collection of vintage tomes. The 1930’s upright piano where the Avett children practiced piano lessons, anchors the room, its high shelf supporting framed photographs of weddings and grandchildren. A black woodstove squats catty-cornered, the backdrop for the “shows” that Scott, Seth and their older sister Bonnie, rehearsed in their bedrooms and performed to their parents delight in the halcyon days of their childhood. Jim Avett, a gifted singer /songwriter himself and loquacious doyen to the Avett clan, holds court in a chair in the middle of the room. "Our house is a reflection of what's important to u," Jim says. "It was always important not to stifle the children's creativity, which we may have overdone," referring to walls sketched with portraits and song lyrics like hieroglyphics on primitive caves. Jim removes Seth's hand-drawn portrait of the family from the wall, showing all five family members smiling with their arms around each other. It is inscribed in Seth's childish handwriting as "the best family in the world."
