East Malvern JFC Inc. Annual Report 2006 PRESIDENT’S REPORT –2006 It is with much pleasure that I present the Annual Report and Financial Statements of the East Malvern Junior Football Club Inc. for the 2006 season.

2006 IN REVIEW – A CELEBRATION OF 20 YEARS OF JUNIOR FOOTBALL

The East Malvern Junior Football Club 1986 - 2006 10 Presidents 78 Coaches 8 Life Members 5 AFL Past Players 13 WJFA Best & Fairest Winners 17 Club Champions 17 Lightening Premierships 28 WJFA Premierships 1 YJFL Premiership 66 x 100 Game Knighthoods 201 Teams 4,900 Players

The planning for the 2006 season commenced in October 2005. The new committee was active in preparing for a number of exciting initiatives that would carry on from the great work of past President Greg Thomas and his committee. The theme of the 2006 season was to celebrate the 20th Anniversary of the Mighty Knights and to further develop the community and club spirit amongst all club members.

Registration day was held early in February due to the Commonwealth Games, with in excess of 390 players selected to play in 14 teams in the WJFA & YJFL. The Club fielded three Under 9 teams and a Senior Colts team (U16/17’s) for the first time.

The pre-season kicked off in typical hot summer conditions with a record number of keen Under 9's and anxious parents having their first kick on Dunlop Oval. It was great to see so many new faces at the Club, in what we hope is long and rewarding association with the Knights. Stonnington Council approved an application from the committee to play on Darling Park every Sunday from 12.30 pm. This enabled the club to relocate our U9's & U10's from Gardiner Reserve and bring all our teams back together. It is worth noting a few early season highlights:

• A record number of player registrations. • Three Under 9 teams - The Blues, Whites & Reds (Bloods). • The transfer of the U14’s, 15’s & Colts to the YJFL competition. • Practice matches against Ashburton. • WJFA Under 9’s Fun Day at Pinewood. • New RED Knights jumpers. • Marshall White logos on all club jumpers. • Ten first time Coaches & Team Managers. • The Club’s first Colts Team (U16/17) coached by Life Member Peter Harley. • Marshall White & East Malvern Bendigo Bank signed up as the Club’s major sponsors in 2006. • Inaugural Marshall White Jumper Presentation Night held on Friday 24th March at Dunlop Oval including the presentation of the Colts Team & Coach. • The unfurling of the four 2005 premiership flags on Round 1 for the U12B's U12W's U13W's & U14's. • The EMJFC Super Sunday Round on 30th April when eight of the Mighty Knight teams played at Dunlop Oval & Darling Ovals throughout the day.

COMMITTEE The committee contributed tirelessly to the management of the club throughout the year to make the 2006 season the best the club has ever had. I would personally like to thank everyone on the committee for their hard work, enthusiasm and devotion to the various tasks they have performed. Being a committee member is often a

East Malvern JFC Inc. Annual Report 2006 thankless task and much is done behind the scenes without notice and fanfare. I would like to thank Simon Heath as my Vice President for his contributions.

There are a number of committee members who will retire this year who have devoted much time and energy to the Club. Rob Mills has served as Club Secretary for the past 2 seasons and has made a significant contribution to the running of the club’s affairs with the WJFA, Stonnington Council and Malvern Sports Club. Rob will continue to play an active role working with the WJFA Executive on the strategic planning of the Association next season. Marc Gauci will take over as Club Secretary.

Cam Christie has served as Treasurer and Registrar for a number of years. Cam was awarded the WJFA 2006 Best Administrator as due recognition to his contributions to the running of the club’s finances. His experience and advice will be greatly missed. I look forward to working with Rob Andriske as our new Treasurer in 2007.

Mick O’Neill has been the Club’s Property & Equipment stalwart for the last 3 seasons and has done an excellent job sorting out team bags & medical kits, purchasing club equipment, attending training sessions, organising team photos and club trophies. I would also like to thank Rebecca O’Neill for managing the sale of club apparel at the beginning of the season. Both Mike and Bec have committed so much time and energy to the management of the teams and have done the work of 3 people. The Club is very appreciative of their fine efforts and I am sure their house will now revert back to normal after being a back up “store room” for our equipment.

There are a number of committee positions that will become vacant over summer and we would ask all parents to consider nominating to join up and make a real contribution to the management of the club, as have the 2006 committee. Now is the time to get involved as pre planning for 2007 will commence next month.

KNIGHTS NEWS Knights News continued to improve throughout the season thanks to committee member Richard Uglow and his team of reporters. The Committee decided to revert back to printing a hard copy for all players each Friday night, in addition to a weekly email being sent and a copy posted on the web site. I have received allot of very positive feedback from all Club Members on how successful Knights News has been this year. Thanks to Marshall White for the weekly printing.

Regular Knight News features included:

• www.play4me.com.au HIT PREDICTIONS • 20th Anniversary Flashbacks • Sponsor Profiles • Game reviews & match previews • Upcoming Events • East Malvern Bendigo Bank weekly scoreboard results • Malvern District AFL Auskick Updates • 50 & 100 Game Player acknowledgments • Tooronga Malvern FC updates • 20th Anniversary celebrations • Club Award night photos • WJFA & YJFL Grand Final editions • Marshall White Knights player profiles

SPONSORSHIP Marc Gauci took the club sponsorship to another level in 2006 and set a benchmark for the next 20 years. Marc set ambitious targets in the off season and through his hard work and persistence worked with Marshall White as a major club sponsor, secured over $ 3000 from East Malvern Community Bendigo Bank and sold all 14 team naming rights. Marc will hand over the role to Chris Kimberley and I welcome Chris to the committee for 2007.

Overall $ 16,000 was raised in sponsorship funds which were allocated to: • New club jumpers & training bids • New RED Knights alternative club jumpers • Funding of Knights jackets • Guest speakers at Club events • Coaches & Team Mangers information nights • Gift vouchers and certificates • Consolidated revenue to keep registrations fees to $ 150 as per 2005 & 2004.

WJFA Our Club continues to enjoy a great working relationship with the WJFA and Bruce Fox, John McGloughan and the WJFA Executive. The WJFA continues to run an excellent junior football competition that is well administered and officiated. Our club is playing a leading role in the continued development and restructure of the WJFA and looks forward to assisting the WJFA to recruit new member clubs to the competition to ensure it’s the long term viability. Thanks to Lyn Gray for acting as our WJFA Committee Delegate.

I would also like to thank all the other member Clubs and Presidents of the WJFA. In particular to Andrew Eastick, President of Ashburton UJFC and his Committee for a healthily and respectful relationship that was shared this season on a number of issues between our two great clubs, including the practices matches held in March.

AUSKICK & TOORANGA MALVERN FC John Gilbert and Simon Heath continued to enhance the relationship with Malvern Auskick and Tooronga Malvern Football Club. One of the highlights of the year was the attendance of our Senior Colts players one Saturday morning when they assisted in drills and the running of the Auskick session.

COACHES ADVISOR Thank you to Brian Sampson for offering his services this season, acting as a Coaches Advisor. Brian attended a number of training sessions and made himself available when ever possible.

East Malvern JFC Inc. UNDER 9’s At the start of the pre-season the Committee set the goal of fielding three Under 9 teams in 2006. Without a doubt this has been very successful and all goes well for this group of players as they continue their junior footy years at the Knights. We have a number of U8 boys who will remain in the Under 9’s next season, so again the Committee is set for a big pre season of recruitment. Our goal for 2007 is to field four Under 9’s and possibly three Under 10’s in 2007

This will present a number of opportunities for parents to volunteer as Coaches, Team Managers and Team Officials. I encourage all the U9 & U10 parents to register their interest for any of these roles NOW.

At this stage there may well be 16 teams fielded in the WJFA U9’s in 2007, allowing for the first time the creation of two divisions. This has come about by the continued growth of clubs like Waverly Park Hawks, Mt. Waverley, and strong pre registrations at Glen Iris and Ashburton. It will present the opportunity for all WJFA teams to be more evenly graded and offer a more competitive environment.

COLTS The fielding of our first ever Senior Colts team has been a fantastic achievement by all involved. The Club would like to thank Peter Harley for his great coaching this year. Peter has developed a great bond & mateship with the team and the parents and it is fantastic news that he is committed to coach the Colts in 2007 along with Barrie Quick as his Assistant Coach. To make the finals in their first year of competition in the YJFL was a tremendous achievement.

The Club would also like to acknowledge the efforts of Gary Petersen, Stewart Gray, Paul Teague, Tracey Matheson and Fran Ioannidis who without their support & the assistance the Colts would not have been formed this year & the ongoing support & assistance of Forti Siakavelis, Mick Carroll, Sam Ioannidis & Kelvin MacDonald and team sponsor Ian & Kim Ledder from the MBE South Yarra Business Centre

There are a number of Knights that have retired from the club this season. The club would like to wish the following Knights all the best in their future footy careers & life endeavours. Many of the boys started in the U9's in 1999 and it is a sad farewell to Matt Petersen (Colts Captain & 100 games), Tim Bennett (100 games), Aaron O’Hare, John Creedon, Luke Lally, Tom Candy, Adam McKenzie, & Andrew Campbell.

East Malvern JFC Inc. Annual Report 2006 CONCLUSION It has been an honour and a privilege to serve as President of this great Club in my first term and have the opportunity to continue on with the great work of immediate Past President Greg Thomas, and to celebrate 20 years of footy at the Knights.

Thank you to my family, the First Lady Lisa for her support, to Amanda for assisting in Knight News and to my own special Knight Tealey. I would also like to thank the parents and players of the U12 Blues. I have made life long friendships with the parents and players and the team’s success is a measure of the parent’s commitment, passion and enjoyment to be involved with their sons.

Lastly the one thing that I have taken out of my role as president this season has been that I have had the opportunity to extend my network of friends at the club and get involved with allot more parents and boys than I would normally do if I was involved in just the one team. We are very fortunate that we have a great club culture that the committee will continue to develop next year. In 1986 the club’s first President Peter Duncan and his Committee started with no money, 4 teams, 80 players and borrowed facilities and equipment. Their spirit and commitment to family participation in sport and to junior footy is still the essence of our great club today and will continue to be the driving force for the next 20 years, no matter how large and successful the club may become.

I look forward with great anticipation to the 2007 season.

TREASURER’S REPORT I can honestly say I have enjoyed all of my four years on the Committee of the EMJFC. Giving 380-odd kids the opportunity to play footy each Sunday, watching them develop into young adults over the years, and seeing how being part of a footy team can give them all a sense of belonging, and a sense of purpose and achievement is something everyone on the Committee should take pride in.

I am especially thankful to the Club for the friends I have made over the journey. I must thank Hodgey for asking me to join the Committee, and to the 3 Presidents I have served (David Hodge, Greg Thomas and Roger) for continuing to emphasise that the Club exists for the kids first and foremost. I believe the attitude of the Committee strongly resonates throughout the rest of the Club…so the consistent "kids-first" ethic of the Committee and the focus on making the EMJFC a unifying element in our local community benefits everyone involved with our Club.

I would like to pass on special personal thanks to Marc, Rob A, and Sue for their fabulous assistance with the $$ this season….to Lyn for signing cheques at strange times ….and to the Mills (plural) - Rob for his help on the desk on rego day, and Julie for her help collecting the $$ for the 20th Anniversary Bash.

Finally, I would like to again say "well done" to Roger for the fantastic job he has done in 2006. His focus and commitment has ensured the 20th Anniversary of the East Malvern Junior Football Club has been a year to remember!!

It has been great working with all of you and I look forward to catching up with you all around the traps! Good luck for 2007!! Cam Christie.

East Malvern JFC Inc. Annual Report 2006 KELECTECH UNDER 9 WHITES COACHES REPORT 2006

2006 was been a good first year of team football for the boys in the Under 9 Whites. The Parents showed great support to the boys and to the coaching team, attending matches and with so many supporting training. A particular thanks to those who helped with timekeeping, scoring, escorting umpires, marshalling the crowd and setting-up the ground. The boys and I were fortunate to have a hard core of dedicated parents who were there week in and week out to perform the ‘official’ roles.

Our Team was made up of very little boys. Our list boasted what must be a record of 19/29 (65%) who were ‘too young’ and we had only one boy bigger than small. The team followed a pattern of rotations with only minor modification. All boys were rostered off for an even number of games. Every game saw each boy rostered for just three quarters – one each in the backline, midfield and the forward line. Except where there safety concerns about significant size discrepancies, even the small boys played in key positions. The boys came up against older teams and often much larger boys. For much of the season our boys displayed incredible courage and resolve. They “played tall” and many showed composure and leadership.

Our year on the field started with a series of wins and then a string of defeats. Initially some fabulous tackling made up for not a lot of skill. Later there was better field play and somewhat improved skill but less tackling. The boys had fun. The turning point was a game where we had five boys hurt in first quarter. That was the third of three matches where we opposed large teams and had mostly fair but unsympathetic umpiring.

Monthly awards went to Matthew Chadwick – setting a benchmark (which many boys matched) in tackling kids twice his weight, Ned Baxter – learning from backline mistakes and improving his accountability dramatically, Jamieson Stefanac – being consistent and reliable across the whole season but perhaps never quite the best on ground and Tom Dahlenberg – a success story: he is small and came to the team knowing no-one. He ended the season taking overhead marks under pressure, holding a key position, kicking goals and showing dash. Many other boys could have won awards. In particular, Hugh Fitzpatrick, Michael Batten, Jasper Mylius and Ed Russell were major contributors to the team in almost every game. Sam Anderson, Nick Gauci, Robbie Tallarico and Elliot Wunsch each showed that they will continue to bloom into really reliable footballers.

 Each week in my match report, I listed 8 to 12 ‘better players’. By season’s end, every boy had been amongst the better players at least once.  With a smaller number of players eligible for best and fairest votes, the best and fairest votes were not quite as diverse. Still 20/29 (69%) received votes.  The team scored 75 goals in the season. Nearly three quarters of the boys (ie 21/29 players, 72%) scored a goal. It was a delight seeing boys one by one feel they have ‘arrived’.

The spread of contributors to team play and team results was a delight for the coaching staff. Most boys made significant contributions and all showed a keenness for the game that indicates that they will all do better and enjoy the game even more next year.

The Team Stats: • 27 boys from 5 schools • 12 of these boys were 7 year olds and therefore able to play U9s next year • Of the 15 games: o 4 boys played every match o 8 boys played 14 matches • We encouraged every boy to come every week and play: o We did not roster anyone off – they only missed if they were injured or declared themselves unavailable o We rotated to give even time on the field – the most any player got for the year was 3.2 qtrs/game and the least was 2.8 qtrs/game • 20 of the boys kicked goals during the season • 23 boys scored Best and Fairest votes: o Lachie Sullivan and Myles Spielvogel were strongest players and both scored highly on the B&F o We then had another 7 players within 4 votes of each other • Every parent played an official role at least 3 times during the season and 14 parents played an official role for more than half of the matches

Game Highlights: • 1st round of Lightening Premiership against Glen Iris Gold. Far bigger and faster opposition took a 2 goal lead into half time and our boys had to come out fighting or it was off to the 3rd vs 4th play-off. They had beaten us recently in the H&A match and were loudly confident that they “would kill us”. They stacked their defence to try to stop our boys from scoring. It didn’t work! Our backline and half backline created a wall across the centre that just wouldn’t let the ball past and kept feeding our forwards with good quality opportunities. Lachie and Myles scored great goals and we streaked past them to a memorable and very tasty victory. • Final of the Lightening Premiership against Glen Iris Black who had just beaten us the week before in controversial circumstances. We never looked like losing and Wylie’s defensive marks in the goal square were magic. When we got the ball from fullback to our forward line and kicked a goal without the ball stopping, touching the ground or going near a pair of Glen Iris hands it was poetry in motion. • Opening quarter against Prahran in the last match of the year when we kicked 6 unanswered goals and played the best footy of the year. • Training the boys on how to fairly and be physical and then to see them play that way and contest against much bigger opposition. • The enthusiasm that every boy showed to be at training on time and to work really hard was fantastic.

Other Highlights: • Great social night at the Haynes • End of season party at the Hockley’s pool • Nicola and Karen investing so much effort into a fantastic season DVD

East Malvern JFC Inc. Annual Report 2006 GARRY & WARREN SMITH UNDER 10 BLUES - COACHES REPORT 2006

What an incredible year it has been for the Garry and Warren Smith Under 10 Blues – 14 games, 14 wins, plus Winner of the WJFA Section 1 Round Robin.

We started the year with a squad of 30, 8 of whom were new faces to the Blues. For a few of the boys it was their first foray into football. It became obvious very early on the boys were keen to do well. Training was well attended and most realised that “train well, play well” actually has some truth to it.

Even though over one-quarter of the team were new, the team gelled very quickly, as was seen in the first game of the season with an 81 point win. Although we did have an undefeated season, some of the games were cliff-hangers with last kicks of the game securing the win. The recurring theme of this year has been the fantastic team effort by all the boys. We clearly had some superstars and congratulations to our two boys, Ed Vickers-Willis and James Boal who were selected in the WJFA Representative Team and played great footy. But in reality it was the fantastic effort of every one that brought success. New players to football like Lachie Hines kicked goals, Corey Bruinstroop took great marks and learnt to kick a football instead of a soccer ball and Ben Engel realised you don’t have to be huge to get a ball out of a pack.

Our focus this year was developing the skills of the game. In Under 9 we learnt to get to the ball, this year we learnt to deliver it to a player or at least to a space in front of the player. The boys have started to understand more about how to play particular positions on the field. We continued our rotation policy of moving position each quarter but players themselves are starting to show a preference and skill for particular spots. Will Paine, one of our blond brigade looks very powerful coming off the Back Flank as does Cormack Gilligan coming out of Centre Half Back. Robbie Bergin may well become better than his namesake, Robbie Flower on the wing and of course Big Carl Burnett is rucking beautifully. I won’t even attempt to name every boy but each and every one has improved.

The Under 10 Blues have been spoilt by a wonderful group of parents. Our Team Manager, Andy Boal may well move to Canberra – he has every skill and more to make a football team work – running a country would be a breeze.

Every Sunday our tireless parents pulled on running shoes, donned the orange Police jackets of the Ground Marshall or manned the scoreboard. We were never short of Trainers, Boundary Umpires, half-time oranges and full-time lollies. Our Social Committee of Sally Wilson and Caroline Abbey made banners, organised parties and generally ensured that a good time was had by all. Our stand in coach Adam Kenyon magnificently filled the breach when yours truly needed a break for periodic psychiatric counselling.

What more can be said. It has been a tremendous pleasure to coach the boys and we all look forward to 2007.

Bring it on!

East Malvern JFC Inc. Annual Report 2006 RAPID CHILL UNDER 10 WHITES - COACHES REPORT 2006

Round 1 April 2: The new look ‘Rapid Chill’ U10W team, consisting of 30 players from 3 local schools, began with a breathtakingly close match with Glen Iris Gold . Of these 30 players, 12 new players fresh from the enclave of Saturday Aus kick, Summer Soccer competition, School ground mayhem & backyard footy, burst into their first season of competitive Junior Football.

Immediately, the endeavour and enthusiasm of this group was evident to Coaches Kelly, Cowan Cullity, Team Manager Berry, Trainer Kidman & Runner Richards from the ‘hit out at Reghetti’.

Focussing on skill development, equal rotation and utilising experienced players to guide the ‘fresh Starters’, the ‘Rapid Chill’ U10 White team made steady progress with a number of players improving steadily during the season.

The new players and the positions they shown most are as follows: • Adison ‘Black Adder’ Bassilli – Full back line ‘Rock of Gibraltar’; • Patrick ‘Bruiser’ Burt – dynamic Ruck & Half backline Chief; • Sebastian ‘Chisel’ Chesney – pack splitting Ruckman; • Nick ‘ Paris end’ Collin – The sophisticated On-baller; • Oliver ‘Twist’ Doswell – Forward line poetry in motion; • Liam ‘fearless’ Fitzpatrick – Forward pocket goal sneak; • William ‘Jesse’ James – Half back line ‘Maverick’; • Fraser ’Afraid’ Nott – Half forward ‘stream line’; • Luca ‘Skywalker’ Skoufos – ‘May the force be with you’ Wingman; • Ben ‘Stiller’ Sullivan – Half forward line ‘secret weapon’; • Edward ‘Chinatown’ Youren – ‘Straight down the middle of town’ full back; • Sebastian ‘Vesuvius’ Drimer – ‘unexpected erupting’ half back liner

Supporting these ‘youngsters’ was the old hands, each week providing consistent, reliable contributions with regular ‘out of the box’ performances to top up the team performance. Names like Andy ‘In & under’ Cowan, Alex ‘Sophano’ Di lorio, Jake’Thunderdome’ Kidman, Mac ‘Wizard’ Matthews & Ciaran ‘Chain’ Shaw rolled up, toiled hard & showed flashes of brilliance to come, for the team each week.

As sure as the sun comes up each day, every team has several players who always inspire the team and supporters with their skill, determination & God given ability to ‘turn it on’. Jack ‘Angry’ Anderson, The Bevan Boys – Luke & Mitchell, Ollie ‘Sublime’ Carson, Blake ’As casual as you like’ Fletcher, Oliver & Thomas ‘The Flower Pot Men’ Richards & Alex ‘Steam Train’ Stefanac showed each week their ability to create & finish the hard work of their team with passages of skilful play.

Moreover, the often brilliant, always desperate & hardworking ethos of Hamish ‘Handbrake’ Cullity, Ed ‘The Dominator’ Cheesman, ‘Dirty’ Harry Kelly & Lachlan ‘ Bulldozer’ Berry culminated in 2 magnificent victories against the Ashy Green & Waverley Park Hawk teams, and numerous other ‘close shaves’ to round off a enjoyable and successful season for every member of the ‘Rapid Chill’ Whites.

The wheels are turning, the momentum is building and the Scarlett Pimpernel is being captured.

Get on the U11W in 2007 for ‘the ride of your life’.

East Malvern JFC Inc. Annual Report 2006 CLANCYS BAKEH0USE UNDER 11 BLUES - COACHES REPORT 2006

Clancy’s Bakehouse Under 11 Blues had a successful Season. They had an 11 - 7 Win / Loss ratio including had two good solid wins in the finals series to ensure they won the 2nd Division flag. Probably more importantly there was a marked improvement in both the skills and capabilities of all boys when comparing the first game of the season to the last.

The team coaching staff was very focused on skills development. We had a variety of levels of experience within the team, from boys playing their first season to those who had played three seasons. Training was primarily on basic skills however there was also a focus on ‘the logic’ behind playing the game - tactical positioning, attacking and defensive play, support play etc.

Rotation was a component of the team’s season with boys playing a quarter in a position and rotating to another the next. The only variation to the rotation was during the finals series when we experimented with maintaining the majority of boys in set positions, however interchanging approximately half of them halfway through each quarter. This approach was deemed highly successful as it ensured all boys felt they had a contribution in each quarter of the game, and provided fresh legs.

With 29 boys in the team, rostering off was used through out the season. Despite this however it was rare that a boy who really wanted to play on any given Sunday was unable to – as injuries and un-availability due to other commitments generally kept numbers on the day to manageable levels.

Injuries from the field or from training during the season were minimal with one broken arm early in the season – obviously not minimal for the boy concerned! I’m happy to report that he recovered and returned to the field later in the season just as enthusiastic. Other injuries were very minor and didn’t result in any boy not being able to play.

Parents were very supportive during the season and always provided great support for the coach and boys both during training sessions and during the game. Special thanks to the two or three dads who were generally at training sessions on the Thursday night.

Due to the coaches work commitments on the Friday evening, Training was held on Thursday evenings. This turned out to be extremely beneficial not just for our boys. Training space on the Friday is extremely limited with the number of teams training so it is hoped that this routine can continue next season. Special thanks to the club and the colts who agreed to support the alternate training day.

All up it was a fun season, enjoyed by all who were involved - boys, parents, coaching staff and team management.

East Malvern JFC Inc. Annual Report 2006 LOGIE SMITH LANYON UNDER 11 WHITES - COACHES REPORT 2006

The Background: The Logie Smith Lanyon East Malvern Under 11 Whites maintained a squad of 29 eager and enthusiastic boys who were all motivated to try hard, have fun and be as competitive as they could be. Pre-Season training was well attended and skills of all players were evident from the outset. A focus was placed on developing both left and right side use was accepted well and players demonstrated this in matches. Rotation policy was put in place but the joint coaches tried to ensure all players got experience in a variety of roles with a minimum of 24 players in action every week getting approximately 3 quarters each. Friday night training was of a high standard and well attended, even after cross country runs or school Zone football finals. Captains and Vice captains on match days were rotated and were selected by coaches based on prior game performance, attendance to training, behaviour and enthusiasm at training. Duties on match day were always well supported by a great parent / family group which made the Manager’s job that little bit easier.

Game Highlights: We started the season with a bang taking on Ashy Red and winning comfortably at home. Our second game was marked by Easter eggs after the game to take away the pain of a narrow loss to Glen Iris. After dominating the game early Glen Iris gradually took control in an entertaining game at Glen Iris. One of our most dominant games was against Waverley which boosted percentage and let the league know that East Malvern Whites could really play attacking football. The “derby” against East Malvern Blue was an excellent clash with the Whites coming out victorious in an excellent game of team football. Our next match was against Clayton – awesome score for only 3 quarters being played but the less said about this game the better. We returned from the break to play Ashy Black and again showed an even display of skilful running football. The Knights then travelled to Prahran and were jumped at the start by a very good Prahran team. Slowly but surely the Knights machine kicked in and that run on style eventually brought about a great victory. We then confronted Ashy Green and controlled this match for 3 quarters but to our surprise were swamped in the last quarter and went down by two goals. The replays commenced and the boys were undefeated in the second round and went into the finals with a lot of confidence. This included a mammoth win against Glen Iris which conveniently fell at the height of ski season. The finals were a learning experience for coache’s players and supporters. There was no lack of effort or endeavour and I know that everyone will be better off for this initial experience. Great season!

Other Highlights: • Parents versus players match followed up by a barbecue for all families with food again generously supplied by the D’Ambrosio family and drinks by the Ledder family. • Mid Season awards with certificates issued to all players. • Player of the month Club awards issued to Jayden Yarrow (April), Jack Kimberley (May), Daniel Gauci (June) and James Anderson (July). • 22 players polled votes in the Club fairest & best and 13 players polled votes in the overall WJFA fairest & best which demonstrates the evenness and strength of this team. • Finals (Division 1) football for the first time which confirmed the undoubted ability of the players whilst LOGIEsetting SMITH some benchmarks LANYON forEAST future MALVERN improvement •UNDER The enthusiasm 11 WHITES that -every COACHES boy showed REPORT to be at training on time and to work really hard was fantastic. The player’s skill development2006 was noted by all parents. • Three boys, Lachlan Waddell, Arron Wheatley and Max Harris were selected in the WJFA Interleague team Otherand Highlights: all performed brilliantly. • Lachlan Waddell won the under 11 “Brownlow” for fairest & best player in the competition. East Malvern JFC Inc. Annual Report 2006 OPTIONS CONSULTING GROUP UNDER 12 BLUES - COACHES REPORT 2006

It is with great pleasure that I can write this years coach’s report following on from the success of 2005. There are so many people that have contributed to another great year of football at East Malvern.

Firstly I must thank John Barry for his support and advice throughout the year. He handed over a fantastic group of boys that we can all be proud of. To my support staff of 2006. Team Manager Wayne Lam, thanks for making everything happen. I know I may not have been entirely honest about the amount of work involved but you did it calmly and efficiently and nothing was ever too much trouble. To Anthony Gleeson a great assistant, fantastic with the boys and a good sounding board for me. Let there be no doubt this years success was a team effort. To Liz Baker, Mike Starr & Phil Hocking for being on call every week as trainers. To my runners Simon Wylie and James Russell it worked a treat. I know sometimes the mad coach had you on the ground more times that not, but it is the David Parkin influence on me. Thanks to Paul McDermott for his assistance when I was away and through the year. Finally to all the mums and dads for their terrific support, encouragement and team spirit, you all make it very enjoyable to coach such a dedicated group of players. I can’t believe they are only under 12.

We have worked hard all year in further developing the boy’s skill level and play an attractive attacking style of football. Whilst doing this we have tried to keep training varied and fun. Over the year we have had assistance from outsiders such as a sprint coach, personal trainers, Digby Morrell & Daniel Harford from the Northern Bullants. We were also lucky enough to have Andrew Symon take us for a session of tackling, which we will look to repeat in 2007. Special thanks to Matthew Peterson from the Colts (and his friend Matt). The 2 Matt’s helped us almost every training night by taking a group for specialist drills. Matt P also watched a lot of our games. He is a terrific help and a fine example to our boys. His knowledge and insight into football is first class and I hope both boys can assist us again in 2007.

The season had a number of highlights. We again had a number of boys who played their 50th game for the Knights; this is a fantastic achievement in any football club. We finished the year in third position on the ladder. Our points for were the second highest in the league reflecting the positive style of football we played. Over the year we had 24 goal kickers reflecting the strong team approach we developed over the season. Pleasingly we also had 22 players who polled votes in our best and fairest. I think that this reflected the team based approach to our football. We have clearly stamped ourselves as the best team in the under 12’s competition over the past 2 years and it is this strong team focus and team work that sets us apart from many other teams. We again had some great games throughout the home and away season. None better than the 2 derby’s versus the Whites which we split one win each this year. The other highlight of the home and away year was the 3 point victory over Glen Iris at home.

This year our path in the finals was to be a challenging one as we finished 3rd on the ladder and we were faced with sudden death games every week. Pleasingly our players rose to the occasion every week lifting their work rate “10%” more every game to secure 3 wins in a row and the back to back division 1 premierships. We hope to build on this success next year by further developing the skill level, tactics and teamwork that makes a great team.

Finally thank you to Roger Teale as a parent and President and the committee who do such a fantastic job in running the club. To my wife Jenny thanks for your support and allowing me all the time to give to other things. To Aaron you were a delight to coach and your feedback was always constructive and important and to Maddie, thanks for the signs on GF day!

Bring on 2007

East Malvern JFC Inc. Annual Report 2006 COLDROCK MALVERN UNDER 12 WHITES - COACHES REPORT 2006

With our Level 1 Certificate for coaching obtained, Andrew Sullivan and I ventured into coaching for the first time this year.

29 boys aged between 11 and 12 with plenty of energy was our challenge. Early concerns over a bye in the draw and the number of players in the team requiring us to roster players off was not as big a problem as initially thought. Injuries, holidays and player availability took care of most of the rostering requirements. Most games were played with 23 or 24 players however against the Blues in round 11 we could only field 18.

During the year we were competitive in nearly all games. The regular season highlight being the 1 point win over the Blues in Round 3, the first time the Whites have defeated the Blues in 4 years. A strong performance and win against Glen Iris in round 12 and fantastic games against Prahran and Ashy Green were also impressive.

The individual highlight goes to Charlie Haley who came 2nd in the WJFA best and fairest for the under 12’s.

The Whites ended up finishing 5th and went on to win the Division 2 flag for the second year running. The boys would be keen to lift their effort and contend the Division 1 finals next year. During the year they managed to defeat the Grand Finalist in Division 1 demonstrating their competitiveness.

The new players settled into the team very well and demonstrated good skills given their lack of match day experience. It is a credit to the other boys how they welcomed their new team mates.

Training was well attended and skill developed through new drills introduced for this age group. Special thanks to Darren Ricardo who made himself available to assist at training.

The playing group as a whole showed improved skills. Their enthusiasm and effort could not be questioned and we would hope that they would all front up again next year.

Special thanks must be extended to our trainers Warren Gibson and Darren Ricardo, our Team Manager Geoff Cowen, our backup Team Manager Richard Snell our Boundary Umpires Luke Whelan and Shane Blandford and all parents who assisted with duties.

The Background: • For the 1st time we were not ‘singing from the same primary school hymn sheet’ - assorted Secondary Schools and mostly playing 2 games per weekend • We clearly failed to consult on an appropriate “ROIDS chemist’ over the summer as did our ’05 GF rivals, however we’ll be looking to the Evans family for advice in this area! • Ashy being spread thin in’05 benefited greatly from a consolidation from 3 teams to 2 • The newcomers Mt Waverley Falcons were decidedly more competitive than Clayton • The attitude to training was pleasing (especially tackling - thanks to the rugby background Dads Peter & Mick) and the ‘RACK’ • A special thank you to Andrew Thompson who took a training session The Season: • Reality arrived early against the Ashy Greens, following a similar result against Ashy Reds in the preceding practice game - losses to be built upon • Next the derby! - and congrats to the Whites on a splendid come from behind win • We opened the account the following week against the Falcons and then were brought back to earth by our ’05 GF opponents (in a big way) • A gutsy win against the old foes Prahran saw us restore some pride • Following the mid-season break we encountered the Ashy ‘’quinella’. The game against the Greens contained the low point of the season in relation to bad sportsmanship when the game was ‘up for grabs’ and an off ball incident occurred debilitating Jack. Despite this, a great effort in going down by less than 2 goals • The return match against the Whites saw a ‘righting of the ways’, and then followed a rare back-to-back win against the Falcons • The 2nd game against the Hawks was looking particularly ‘ugly’ at the long break, and to their credit the boys showed some real fortitude in the 2nd half to outscore them • Another win against Prahran proved particularly costly with the loss of Jack for the remainder of the season, and despite 2 solid performances against both Ashy teams (injuries and illness had a significant impact) we arrived at the finals for the 3rd year • Our goal scoring was further depleted with the loss of Jordan, and an unfortunate combination of injury to Mitch R-G and an inopportune dose of the flu which demonstrably reduced TJ ‘s effectiveness compounded our woes - however, at _ time the boys responded admirably to finish the season in style with their heads held high Player Highlights: • Our B&F - if you’re ever in the trenches Dan’s your man - Jack - inspirational as ever and leading goal scorer with 25 goals - Darcy - a great leap forward and all round performance - Richard T - unselfish and reliable - Charlie - improved markedly with the season - Matt - what a qtr!! - Luke = attitude! - Strait-line Harry, good to watch - Louie - a man for any task - Mitch R-G - big year and more to come! - TJ - Mr reliable and a big boot - Tim V-W - ‘niche’ ruckman - Wrenny - silky kick - JC - the left foot goal! - Mitch B - owned the wing - speedy Sam C - Jeff - ‘in and under’ - Tim E - some great marks - Marksy - snapped a few gems - Ollie - some courageous grabs - Jeremy - marked improvement in tackling - Frazer - reliable down back - Michael - noted 2nd efforts - Jordan - loves a mark! - Sullers - the tackling textbook Parents • A big thanks to the parents whose contribution makes the BLUES the team it is - never a no, always willing to support

East Malvern JFC Inc. Annual Report 2006 BELLA CASA UNDER 13 WHITES - COACHES REPORT 2006

Our boys started the season with a disappointing loss to our old foe Prahran. After beating them quite convincingly in the 2005 Grand Final, it was certainly a wake up call to the fact that the Under 13 competition was not going to be a jaunt in the park each Sunday. Clearly, we were playing teams that had a mature approach to their footy, and in order to match it with them, we were going to have to re-assess our aspirations for the year. I said to the boys at the start of the season that this year was all about “improvement”; both as a team and as individuals. As a team we should be looking to improve on our 2005 performances, and as individuals, we should be trying to improve our game week by week. Having said that, our yardstick (the other teams by which we measure ourselves) had changed dramatically from 2005. Instead of 3 Under 13 Ashy teams, there were now 2. An unknown team to us, the Mt Waverley Falcons had entered the competition, and the Waverley Park Hawks were fielding a side that in my opinion clearly had been structured with one aim in mind each week……the 4 points. Following our loss to Prahran, we turned it around and had a fairly comfortable win against our brother team the East Malvern Under 13 Blues. This was a team that had no problem beating us in the past, and the way that our boys played was testament to their potential. I will never forget the faces of Harry Lachal, Harry Batten and Andy Prowse in the rooms afterwards…it was like every Christmas had come at once for them and they’d all played a very constructive game of footy, especially Harry Lachal, who’d put in a blinder. Unfortunately, that was our first and only win for a while. We certainly put in some valiant efforts against teams who were simply too good for us, especially the Ashburton teams, and it wasn’t until we came up against Prahran again that we could turn our losing streak around. On their home ground we exacted a measure of revenge for the humiliation of the first round 47 point defeat with an 11 point victory. It was a hard fought and tough game with no quarter asked for, nor given. A standout effort from Patrick Der Jeu and Michael Eva saw us home with a good result.

That good win was however again followed by a series of losses, and some notable shellackings handed out to us by a couple of the powerhouse teams. Whilst a win is to be savoured and enjoyed when it happens, I am a firm believer that you can never truly enjoy the passion of a win unless you’ve experienced the despair following a walloping, or in many cases a narrow loss. Our boys deserve to go on for some memorable wins in the future if 2006 is any indication. We had another serviceable win (30 points) over Prahran in the last round of the home and away season, and our long game was finally starting to bear fruit. Players of the calibre of Tom Ahern who just NEVER gives up, Andrew “Happy” Hannan who was starting to make his presence felt around the ground with strong marking and long kicking, and Jeremy ”Jezza” Crowe with his bullocking runs out of the backline, made their mark in no uncertain fashion. We also had notable contributors in Adam Depasquale who booted 4 goals, and Danny Bollas whose courage in and under the packs continued to inspire.

We finished 6th on the ladder after Mt Waverley Falcons and above Prahran. I was confident that we could take it up to the Falcons, and in the first final against them we were beaten by 23 points. The scoreboard didn’t reflect our boys’ performance however. We started with a very competitive first quarter with the wind in our favour. Unfortunately we didn’t take advantage of this and the Falcons kicked away in the second quarter simply by keeping us scoreless (bar one solitary behind) and putting a couple of goals on to their tally. However, we then kept them to only one major for the second half and fought out a very competitive game of footy. The good thing about this game was that we proved to ourselves that we had their measure if we applied ourselves. We now had to get over what I was sure was going to be a resurgent Prahran the following week.

Prahran came out with ALL guns blazing. They were motivated, confident, and applied themselves to the task of beating us with a vigour that I hadn’t seen in an opposition for a while. Despite this, Adam Depasquale, Akash Madnani, Dion Bluett, and Michael Kinch maintained composure up forward and ensured that Prahran didn’t have it entirely their own way. However, Prahran’s ferocity resulted in a considerable deficit at half time. Coming out after the long break, we re-applied ourselves to the task of manning up, kicking long, holding our marks, and making the footy ours. My message at halftime centred around “greed”. “Be greedy…want the ball….don’t let the opposition have a slice of the action…make it yours”. Some great play around the ground by Andrew Hannan, Michael Eva, Sam Hynes, Angus McAvaney and Harry Payton brought us closer to bridging the gap that faced us at half time. Brilliant marking in the packs by Jeremy Crowe and Ed Chalmers, and the usual scrapping for the footy by Harry Rowsthorn edged us even closer. Pat Der Jeu was again damaging around the ground, and Danny Bollas and Tom Ahern were, as usual, making nuisances of themselves to the opposition with creative play around the packs. Fred Launder was swung to the full back position and single-handedly repelled at least 4 Prahran forward thrusts. Harry Lachal made them pay for their mistakes with courageous play across the half back line, ably supported with sheer guts and determination by Harry Batten and Tom Uglow. Andy Prowse played the half forward line as though it was his and with James Burt and Michael Kinch in support, we kept attacking the goals. Unfortunately it wasn’t to be and we just fell short losing by 2 points; East Malvern 5.11.41 – Prahran 6.7.43.

I sincerely hope that all boys will look back on their 2006 season as positive and as a season where they grew in stature both as sportsmen and as young men. It was a privilege to coach them over 2005 and 2006 and I wish them well on whatever path they choose. Finally, I would like to thank Neil Hannan for his organisational skills in keeping it all together as team manager. It is a thankless job and can be very much a background role. It always seems that the coach gets the plaudits (especially when the team wins), but I can honestly say that without Neil, the season simply wouldn’t have happened for our team. Thanks are also due to Brain Eva and Rob Der Jeu as the team trainer and runner respectively. These are very important roles and the safety, cohesiveness, and well being of our team was held together through the work of Brian and Rob. I also sincerely thank our regular boundary umpires, Jon Broome, Tim Chalmers, and Tony McAvaney, and thanks also to all the other parents who assisted us as ground marshalls, scoreboard attendants, umpire escorts, and goal umpires. I apologise if I have left anybody out, and I wish everybody the very best for the future.

East Malvern JFC Inc. Annual Report 2006 RED MULLET FISHCAF UNDER 14’S - COACHES REPORT 2006

The season really commenced in December 2005 when the club aligned our games with the Yarra Junior Football League through some hard work carried out by our club and the WJFA.

Our first aim for the year was to integrate the two teams from last year and with the addition of one new player to develop a group which could give the Yarra League Gold Division a big shake.

We soon found out where we were in the Big League with an initial 18 goal thrashing by eventual Gold Division Premiers, Glen Iris. Three losses followed and we were relegated to Brown Division where we were able to readjust our goals to climb the ladder and contest the finals.

We started well with a strong team orientated win against Camberwell and a gutsy ‘mud bath’ win against Fitzroy. By this stage we knew we were genuine contenders and set about developing the team strategies and self belief that would take us all the way. Our only loss was to Fitzroy in Round 15 which in the scheme of things was a blessing in disguise as we needed to refocus our team attitude.

Second Semi-Final against Fitzroy showed that our teamwork and mental toughness had matured and we ran out 30 point winners into our first YJFL Grand Final.

We went into the Grand Final quietly confident. Unfortunately with the game played at Bundoora we were starved of our local support but the game was played in near ideal ground and weather conditions. Against similarly skilled Fitzroy the first half was an arm wrestle with a high standard of footy played by both teams and we retired into the change rooms 3 points down. Our 3rd ‘premiership’ quarter was a beauty with our ruck and centre players dominating the clearances and lifting the whole team to register an 8 goal to 1 quarter and effectively tie up the game.

Our boys should be very proud of themselves for the way they went about developing their maturity which enabled them to finish the year on such a successful note.

Special thanks to Chris Russell for all your hard work as Team Manager and to David as Assistant Coach with Neil and Mick on Friday nights and Ray and Tony as Runners and Trainers and all the other parents ho contributed. Your efforts are greatly appreciated. It’s a team effort.

East Malvern JFC Inc. Annual Report 2006 WWW.PLAY4ME.COM.AU UNDER 15 – COACHES REPORT 2006

It has been said by many before but having watched our players growing from AusKick, though U9’s, to the middle years and now to U15’s has been a wonderfully enriching experience.

This year the skill level and the enjoyment and satisfaction they players have shown has been extraordinary. And to say that the results do not show the effort put in is an understatement. The result of the final game, a draw was both a huge disappointment and yet hugely satisfying as well. (Apart form the heart attack that several of the parents approached).

Of the 143 goals we kicked this season, 81% of the team booted at least one. Yes we had some stars but we really played well as a team and there was a feeling of assisting other players where the opportunity presented itself. Some of the passages of play were a joy to watch as the ball flowed smoothly from one to another and then through the big sticks.

Of the players this year we have an astounding 1, 976 games of experience between them. Six have played over 100 games (Cunningham, Stobart, Woods, Sampson, Pane & Quick). Of the rest, fifteen have played more than 50 games and many will break the 100 next season).

Over the years and through the various guises of the Blues, Whites and Reds we have had some very good coaches. This year however we were blessed with the tutelage of Coach Barrie Quick. A great mentor who gave the players their lead and developed individual skills; all reflected on the field.

Mention must be made of the great work done by the volunteer parents who were press-ganged into various roles (Dr David Wood, Legs Sampson as runner, the very precise timekeeper Dolan, Tony Cruise, David Conly, Tom Roberts, Sullivan, Hess and others).

East Malvern JFC Inc. Annual Report 2006 MBE SOUTH YARRA COLTS – COACHES REPORT 2006

For the first time in the clubs history we fielded a Colt’s team (U16 and U17) in the Yarra League. We played in second division (four divisions) and each week found ourselves playing ‘out of our weight division’ with three quarters of our team under 16’s playing mainly under 17’s opposition teams.

We really had a tremendously successful year with no one expecting us to make the finals, but we did. When I say we, I mean everyone connected with the team – the players, parents, relatives and friends.

It was a great effort particularly as we were plagued with injuries to a number of our key players which saw us with only 15 or 16 players on a number of occasions during the season.

The way the team moulded together 2005’s under 15’s and 16’s, was a credit to the boys and particularly to Gary Peterson who kept the base of last year’s under 16’s playing with us, enabling us to field a competitive team.

A special thanks goes to those under 17 players, many of whom were studying for their year 12, which put server pressure on them and yet they still turned up at training and on Sundays.

The team was lucky to have involved parents who helped out at training, on Sunday’s and behind the scene. A trio of team managers Tracey Matherson, Fran Ioannidis and Paul Teague had everything running smoothly. Stewart Gray was a great support as assistant coach, both at training and on game days, Forti Siakavelis, Kelvin MacDonald and Mick Carroll were always helping out at training and on game days, while Sam Ioannidis was there ever week as trainer.

Thanks also to all the other parents who were always there to help either during the game and particularly after the game for the thankless task of cleaning the rooms. Thanks also to the club committee who supported us all year in establishing a colt’s side.

It was a great experience to coach the ‘senior team’ in the club that had so much parental support, and which was made up of such a tremendous group of kids who really enjoyed their footy.

The boys should be proud of the efforts they put in, apart from one game we were always in with a winning chance; we beat sides ahead of us with some great ‘run on football’ that saw the boys back themselves in against physically bigger and older opposition.

Some of the highlights in the year were a nine point lose to Bundoora who ended up moving up into division one, our eleven goal win over Richmond, after a disappointing first round performance against Richmond the boys played exhilarating football, and our final home and away game against Doncaster, only going down by three points to the ultimate premier Doncaster.

2006 was a tremendous learning experience for the boys, every player individually grew in self confidence and self respect to some extent as a result of playing week in week out against bigger and stronger opposition. A hall mark of our players was their ‘never give up attitude’ and their preparedness to take risks.

Good luck to our under 17’s leaving this year and I hope this years current under 16’s will stay on for their senior year in the Colts to continue the tradition we started this year.

A special thanks to Ian and Kim Ledder for their sponsorship support of the team this year.

Coach Peter Harley
