Good afternoon to one and all for our league match against near-rivals Porthleven — the First team’s first home match since 28th January. Porthleven are currently mid-table, but they beat the ‘Old Mousehole’ 3-2 at Gala Parc in September, so the ‘New Seagulls’ will be looking to put matters right today.

A lot has happened in the last 6 weeks. Against Holsworthy in the league we won 4-1 at home and drew 2-2 away. Then the Charity Cup quarter-final on 4th February was postponed on the Friday after heavy rain - it’s now next Saturday (11th). After that we lost very narrowly 3-2 at Plymouth Marjon on their plastic pitch, but heavily away 7-0 at Premier Division high-fliers Bodmin Town in the league cup quarter final and also last Saturday 6-0 at second-place Elburton Villa. Great spirited performances from all the players, who are learning their trade and wearing the green shirt with pride. We were 5th at Christmas and after all the upheaval we’re still 6th, so very well done to all. The match reports are on various pages in this programme.

Meanwhile the Reserves are trying to recover from the loss of half their side to the First team, and have drawn 3-3 at St Buryan, beaten St Keverne 3-0 at home and lost 1-2 to Chacewater here. Harry, Mark and the players will be pushing hard to get the points to climb away from the relegation zone and we wish them success THIS SEASON’S WEST DIVISION CLUBS and good luck. Today they’re at fellow bottom-four rivals St Keverne.

04 33 THE BOSS’s BLOG: PLAYER-MANAGER STEVE PARKER-BILLINGE

Its been an interesting few weeks since our last home game, which seems an eternity ago. In the League we’ve played Holsworthy, Elburton Villa and Plymouth Marjons – all away - and picked up just one point, and also had an eventful cup tie at high flying Bodmin in the League Cup. A good point at Holsworthy, but disappointing to concede an equaliser in the last ten minutes. However, a draw on reflection was a fair result. We had only 11 fit players and the harsh, heavy pitch took its toll in the second half. Plymouth Marjon is a difficult place to go to, as proven by their home record. It took us a good half hour to get used to the artificial pitch and by that time we found ourselves 1-0 down. We equalised before the half was out, but that 10-15 minute spell in getting used to the pitch again in the second half cost us as we conceded two early goals. To be fair all the lads dug in through to the end and pulled one back, which was nearly two but for a good save from a Josh Otto effort in the dying minutes. Bodmin midweek was always a tough ask, with players coming straight from work, coupled with the fact that, with no direct access to the ground due to road works, two of the starting line-up made it 5 minutes into the game. Matt Howes was carrying a knock, so was happy to stand in for skipper Billy Curtis, who came straight on after his late arrival. This didn’t stop the Bodmin quality though. The league commended our efforts in raising a side in the circumstances, with players leaving and others being cup-tied. However to turn up just isn’t enough. Again everyone gave their all and with only three of last years squad in our eleven, Bodmin’s quality shone through and looked like scoring on every break. Although the scoreline doesn’t show it, we did have our own chances throughout the game and maybe with a little more experience, we might have given them a bit of a scare. Elburton Villa saw the end of a tough month on the road for us and give me my first real opportunity to manage from the sidelines. Although it was a different experience, I didn’t enjoy the part where I named Adam Robathan number 1 - but he did well in his first game with us and will play more of a part before the end of the season. Elburton were a very good and well drilled side and took all their chances well. We seemed a little anxious throughout the game - maybe because of the amount of minutes our small squad had played over the previous weeks. One positive was Luke Johnson’s return from injury - he managed a good 35 minutes. For today’s game, it’s the first time I’ve have had a full squad to pick from. We’ve signed Tyler Tonkin, a great addition with his composure on the ball. Also back in the squad come Bradley Wills, whose power and experience have been missed. Josh Otto is back after his County duty, in which I think we all applaud his achievement in reaching the national final (which will mean another weekend without him!). The support of the fans, friends and family has been great over the past few away games as always and I would personally like to thank each and every one of you. 32 Steve 05

ELBURTON VILLA 6-0 MOUSEHOLE: SOUTH WEST PENINSLA LEAGUE, WEST DIVISION

SATURDAY 25TH FEBRUARY 2017 AT HAYE ROAD COMING UP — NEXT SATURDAY The Seagulls’ longest trip of the season ended in their second defeat of the week as second-place Elburton Villa scored three goals in each half without reply on their fine playing surface in east Plymouth. 11TH MARCH Mousehole were without the unavailable Kevin Lawrence and Lewis Caspall, and also Josh Otto who was on AT TRUNGLE PARC duty in Cornwall under-18’s victorious National Youth Cup semi-final tie with Durham. Player-manager Steve Parker-Billinge took the opportunity to assess his new-look team from the sidelines and, with the Reserves KICK OFF 2:00pm having no fixture, he gave goalkeeper Adam Roberthan a start and drafted into the squad youngsters Ross Bryant and Will Trenoweth. Extra time & penalties if necessary Elburton, rebuilding after relegation from the Premier Division, were arguably the best side seen at Trungle CORNWALL CHARITY CUP

Parc so far this season in their 4-0 victory against Mousehole’s full-strength side in October, and they carried The Lawrence Durning Cup on in the same well-organised and pacy fashion on Saturday. QUARTER FINAL They could already have been ahead when Will Matthews finished off a quick break after the hosts won the ball back on the halfway line on 22 minutes. Midfielder Jacob Smelt scored a second four minutes later after MOUSEHOLE v WENDRON UNITED Matthews broke forward again, and two minutes before half-time Smelt’s fierce drive was parried by Rob- erthan where Robbie Mann was quickest to the loose ball to make it 3-0. Mousehole the Cup holders Under darkening skies the hosts continued in the same vein in the floodlit second half, but Mousehole came back more into the game with better ball possession and some half chances. Caleb Marsden had forced goal- keeper Jack Dixon into a sprawling save with a far-post header from Joe Davies’ searching cross after 58 minutes, but barely a minute later it was 4-0 as Jordan Rundle’s brilliant free kick from 25 yards came back off the crossbar and Smelt got his second goal with a simple header. AFTER THAT

Dixon in the home goal became busier in the last 25 minutes, blocking substitute Luke Johnson’s close-range SATURDAY 18TH MARCH shot when one-on-one, and tipping over Nathan Goodspeed’s 25-yard shot in the visitors’ best moment. However, the Villa were in no mood to sit back, and Smelt got his third and fourth goals of the afternoon with PENINSULA LEAGUE WEST DIVISION a well-executed volley from the edge of the box on 84 minutes and a last-minute run through the defence straight from Dixon’s goal kick for 6-0 in the last minute. 06 31 PLYMOUTH MARJON 3-2 MOUSEHOLE: SOUTH WEST PENINSULA LEAGUE, WEST DIVISION SATURDAY 11TH FEBRUARY 2017 AT DERRIFORD ROAD

Mousehole made their first-ever visit to Plymouth Marjon and came away with a narrow defeat in an end-to-end game on the hosts’ 4G pitch.

For Marjon, this win - only their fourth home victory out of 14 since gaining promotion this season from the Plymouth & West Devon League – lifted them into a position of relative safety in mid-table, while Mousehole’s first league defeat since the management and squad changes at the beginning of January still resulted in them retaining fifth place, with fewer games played than all the teams around them.

Player-manager Steve Parker-Billinge has drafted in half-a dozen newcomers from the Reserves and the side has begun to have a settled look. However, on this occasion they took some time to adapt to the pace of the ball on the synthetic surface and after being undone by two early goals after the break to go 3-1 down they eventually ran out of time in search of an equaliser.

Left winger Dan Thompson was Marjon’s danger man, his darting run and cross enabling Scott Parsons to head in for 1-0 on 18, and he scored two identical goals in the 48th and 55th minutes taking advantage of time and space to fire in low right-footed shots from 25 yards that skidded inside the post.

Mousehole came back into the match in the latter period of the first half, with the home side earning three yellow cards in quick succession as they tried to protect their lead. But it was 1-1 right on half-time as Lewis Caspall’s tricky run was halted by a trip and he stepped up to strike the resultant penalty hard into the top corner.

To their credit The Seagulls fought back from 3-1 down after the hour and it was Lewis Caspall again who

gave them hope with a deft glancing header from Kevin Lawrence’s fine free kick on 66 minutes.

The last 25 minutes saw Mousehole play some confident and controlled attacking football with the home side having to defend in numbers. Marjon had chances to make the game safe with a couple of breakaways, but the crucial moment came when home goalkeeper Liam Hooks pulled off a tremendous diving save from a Josh Otto shot from the edge of the box five minutes from time to deny Mousehole the equaliser that had looked increasingly likely.

Mousehole: Steve Parker-Billinge, Matthew Howes, Billy Curtis (captain), Luke Nowell, Connor Davey, Josh Otto, Nathan Goodspeed, Jason Simmons, Kevin Lawrence, Lewis Caspall, Caleb Marsden.

Substitutes: Jamie Simons (for Caleb Marsden, 75), Joe Davies (for Jason Simmons, 80), Luke Johnson

IN MEMORY OF DUDLEY PENROSE, 1939 – 2017

Mousehole AFC was saddened to hear last month of Dudley’s death at Benoni Nursing Home, St Just, after a painful illness. Dudley’s wife Olga also died recently, having been a leading figure at Mousehole Bird Hospital.

<<

Apart from his outstanding service to Penlee Lifeboat Station (see article on Facebook), Dudley was a larger-than-life character in Mousehole, being nicknamed the “Mousehole Mayor” by Brian Richardson.

From a young age he was a keen and loyal supporter of Mousehole AFC and a regular attender at The Seagulls’ home games.

His enthusiastic presence at home matches and his vocal support for the team will be missed. When Brian visited Dudley at Chypons Residential Home in Newlyn, he was full of advice on how to motivate the players for the next away match! Dudley’s daughter Linda says: “He’ll have his Mousehole scarf with him….and he’d have his club coat on as well, if only it fitted him better!” 12 25

16 21 NOTES ABOUT PORTHLEVEN AFC

The Fisherman have won 9, drawn 6 and lost 12 of their league fixtures, scoring 46 goals and conceding 50. They currently stand 11th in the 18-team league table, with 33 points from 27 games, six points behind Mousehole but having played five games more. They are in a group of six mid-table teams separated by five points.

One of their nine victories came against Mousehole under the Gala Parc floodlights in late September, in a 3-2 win in front of 109 spectators. The scorers that evening were Steve Burt (38) and Mark Vercesi (58) for Mousehole, and Dan Hindmarch (50), Charlie Young (62) and Jack Webber (84) for Porthleven.

One of Port’s scorers that evening, Charlie Young, later joined Mousehole in December but played only two games before returning to Porthleven at the beginning of January. He scored the goal of the game in the Boxing Day derby at Penzance as The Seagulls won 6-0.

Porthleven have had an inconsistent season, with only one set of back-to-back wins, but they are still in a better position than at this time last year when they were in the bottom three, having played more games than all the teams around them.

After today they have six league games remaining, of which five are at home. They have had some good away wins - 3-0 at Holsworthy, 5-2 at Illogan, 4-3 at Liskeard, and 3-1 at both Wendron and Bude.

In their last 5 league games since the start of the year they have won 1 (Bude away), drawn 2 and lost 2. Last Saturday they drew 2-2 at home with Wadebridge Town

Their home attendances average 75, the same as Mousehole’s. The highest was 193 against league leaders Sticker on Bank Holiday Monday 2nd January, a match won 4-0 by the table-topping visitors and notable for several red cards.

Porthleven stand fourth-bottom of the West Division disciplinary table with 7 red cards and 34 yellows. (Mousehole are 8th with 4 reds and 24 yellows).

Porthleven’s Joel Allen was a fellow defender with Josh Otto in Cornwall Under- 18s’ semi-final win over Durham in the national county youth cup last Saturday, while midfielder Jack Webber was a substitute.

In January, Porthleven were one of four clubs in the West Division who applied to the SWPL for promotion to the Premier Division, the others being Sticker, Elburton Villa and St Dennis. The results of the ground grading inspections are expected by 20 the end of this month. 17 MOUSEHOLE AFC SQUAD PORTHLEVEN SQUAD Colours: Green Colours: Yellow & Black
