There will be a JR WHIPPET RESCUE STALL at the Show • JUDGES PROFILES • Mrs Jackie White (Baldrey & ) When I first met my husband Michael over 48 years ago, his family owned racing Greyhounds. After we got married and had 3 children, it was time to have a pet, our first flat was not big enough to have a so we managed to buy a blue and white Whippet puppy. A few months after we bought him a friend who could be shown and that was how it all started. Going to a small show with the children for a fun afternoon out, we all enjoyed it so it became our hobby. We were introduced to Mrs Gwen Hempstock at Crufts and she kindly said that we could have one of her puppies sired by the BOB winner Ch Welstar Royal Mint and Ch Broughland Gina of Baldrey joined our family at 8 weeks old, and as they say, the rest is history. By then, we had moved into a larger house with a big garden, so we were then in the position to start our breeding plan. Gina was bred from and is behind all our stock today (we made up several Champions, CC & RCC winners). Michael wanted to have a Greyhound at this point in time, so we bought a 2 year old bitch from Mrs June Minns (Exhurst Elegance) and she came to live with us in September 1980 and gained a RCC. She was also bred from and the Baldrey Greyhounds began. We have been showing for approximately 42 years and breeding for about 35 years. the last Whippet bitch I showed now lives with one of my sons and his family. We also bred in a small way. I have judged in his country and abroad for several years now and always find it a privilege and a pleasure to be asked to judge both of these lovely breeds. One of the longest distances travelled to judge was to South Africa, where, I was delighted when the Whippet I gave BOB to won the Hound Group and RBIS. Jackie

Mrs Linda Jones (Welstar) I believe I have always been competitive, having done Show Jumping and In-hand showing ponies in the past with moderate success. In the early 1970s, I was introduced to the world of Whippets and fell in love. My first show dog was Skyeboat Silver Lining (Ch Deepridge Mintmaster ex Glenbervie bitch). He and I learnt the art of showing together, winning many prizes including a RCC at the Whippet Club. He was almost 17 when he died. I have been fortunate to have homebred Champions. Eight in total, plus my lovely Ch Bluestreak Bittersweet of Welstar. My foundation bitch was a beautiful apricot fawn, Rasaday Amber (Deepridge Mintmaster ex Rasaday Oakbark Mirielle). She was mated to Ch Shalfleet Silver Knight of Skyeboat which was basically an outcross. I was so lucky to get my first Champion here, Welstar Minted Model and a litter brother Welstar Minted Gold of Maranver, a RCC winner. Later, Model was mated to Ch Nimrodel Wiveton and from this litter came the fabulous Ch Welstar Royal Mint, owned by Gwen Hempstock. He won 19 CCs (2 at Crufts) and 11 RCCs. He held the record for males for two years at that time, only succeeded by his grandson Ch Nimrodel Wanderer. Mint was the sire of Champions and CC winners. When Model was mated to Ch Nimrodel Ruff, I was lucky to get Ch Welstar Winning Dream, a Hound Group winner. She touched the measure at 18". In the 1990s came the wonderful Ch Welstar Red Robin, by Gorwynne Reed Bunting of Baldrey ex Welstar reflections. He was the sire of many Champions and ticket winners. I think he did a lot for the breed and I have been privileged to share my life with them. Exhibitors must not pick up dogs by their tails and leads when lifting them. This is not acceptable. Exhibitors should note that such practice would constitute harsh handling and reports of such practice will be referred to the Committee under Kennel Club Show Regulation F11. 15. It is not acceptable to handle a dog in a manner which causes its feet not to touch the ground when on the move. Exhibitors should note that such practices could constitute harsh handling and reports of such practice will be referred to the Committee under Kennel Club Show Regulation F11. 16. All exhibitors must be familiar with Kennel Club Regulation F (Annex B) - Regulations for the Preparation of Dogs for Exhibition. 17. All dogs resident outside of the UK must be issued with a Kennel Club Authority to Compete number before entry to the show/event can be made. All overseas entries without an Authority to Compete number will be returned to the exhibitor/competitor. 18. Dogs in Vehicles on Hot Days. Your dog is vulnerable and at risk during hot weather and the Kennel Club offers the following guidance to help guide you through the do’s and don’ts travelling to and whilst at KC licensed events. • When travelling to a show please take a moment to consider whether the route to the show is on a busy holiday route, and leave earlier to avoid increased time in traffic jams. • If your vehicle is not air-conditioned seriously consider whether travelling to the show is a good idea at all. • The vehicle should be as fully ventilated as possible, and plenty of stops should be taken, with lots of water available to drink. • Ensure your dog is not sitting in full sunlight. There should be plenty of free flowing air around the dog. • When at the show, never leave your dog in the vehicle. • Keep the dog in the shade - take your own shade for example a large umbrella and always have plenty of water available to drink so your dog stays well hydrated. • Avoid your dog taking part in unnecessary exertion, or from standing in exposed sunlight for extended lengths of time. Remember, if you feel hot your dog is very likely to feel much hotter and dehydrated, and this could lead to dire results. Please look after your dog’s welfare. WARNING: IF YOUR DOG IS FOUND TO BE AT RISK FORCIBLE ENTRY TO YOUR VEHICLE MAY BE NECESSARY WITHOUT LIABILITY FOR ANY DAMAGE CAUSED. Anyone whose dog is entered at a Kennel Club licensed event should take all reasonable steps to ensure the needs of their dog(s) are met, and should not put a dog’s health and welfare at risk by any action, default, omission or otherwise. Breach of Kennel Club Regulations in this respect may be referred to the General Committee for disciplinary action under Kennel Club Rules and Regulations. Exhibitors/Competitors are reminded that show societies have the right under Kennel Club Regulation to refuse any entry. 19. Not for Competition entries will be accepted. Details of each dog so entered must be recorded on the entry form and must be Kennel Club registered. 20. No modifications will be made to this Schedule except by permission of the General Committee of the Kennel Club, which will be followed by advertisement in the Canine Press wherever possible. 21. The South West Whippet Committee can accept no responsibility for products advertised or sold by stand holders at this show and remind exhibitors that grooming products on sale may not meet the requirements of the Regulation for the Preperation of Dogs for Exhibition. 22. Any owner, competitor or other person in charge of a dog is required to remove as soon as possible any fouling caused by their dog(s) at any Kennel Club licensed show, within the licensed venue and within the environs of that event including car and caravan parks and approaches. 23. The owner, exhibitor, handler or any other person in charge of a dog at Kennel Club licensed events must at all times ensure that the dog is kept under proper control whilst at the licensed venue, including its environs, car and caravan parks and approaches. 24. A dog may be disqualified by the General Committee from any award, whether an objection has been lodged or not, if proved amongst other things to have been: a) registered or recorded as having been bred by the scheduled judge. This shall not apply to a judge appointed in an emergency. b) exhibited without payment of approriate entry fees. 25. Every exhibitor shall ensure that whilst the dog is being exhibited, its handler shall display the correct ring number.
