POSTGAME NOTES & QUOTES TORONTO MAPLE LEAFS 5, COLORADO AVALANCHE 3 NOVEMBER 23, 2019 First Star TEAM NOTES Tyson Barrie (1g, 1a) The Avalanche is now 8-3-1 on Hockey Fights Cancer night. Second Star Colorado is 5-1-2 against the Eastern Conference this season, the final team Nazem Kadri (2a) in the NHL to lose to an Eastern Conference team in regulation. Third Star The Avalanche held Toronto to three shots on goal in the second period, Auston Matthews (1g, 1a) matching the fewest shots against in a period this season (2x - last: Nov. 2 at Arizona). TEAM STATS The Avs were 60.3% at the faceoff circle tonight, their highest faceoff win percentage in a game this season. Avalanche INDIVIDUAL NOTES Shots: 37 Andre Burakovsky extended his point streak to five games. He has registered nine points over that span (5g, 4a), matching his highest point total over any Power Play: 1-3 five-game stretch of his career (also: Jan. 15-23, 2017, 4g, 5a). Penalty Kill: 1-2 Cale Makar finished with 27:45 of ice time, a career high, an Avalanche sea- son high and the most of any rookie in 2019-20. It’s the third-most ice time Faceoffs: 60% for an Avalanche rookie defenseman since the team moved to Denver (Martin Skoula, 31:03 on Dec. 1, 1999 vs. Edmonton; Tyson Barrie, 28:48 on April 26, Toronto 2013). Shots: 28 QUOTES Colorado C Nazem Kadri Power Play: 1-2 On Tonight’s Game: “I think the first period was a bit of a write off, we didn’t show up, so [we] just dug ourselves in a hole and it was too much to climb Penalty Kill: 1-3 out of. Second and third periods, we were definitely the better team but the first period hurt us.” Faceoffs: 40% On The Avs’ Adjustments After The First Period: “Just to be more assertive, more aggressive, show some more urgency. I think those are the things we pointed out and definitely for the rest of the game we did a better job. But like Avalanche Schedule I said, it was just a little too much, too late.” Sunday, Nov. 24 No practice Colorado LW Andre Burakovsky On Tonight’s Game: “Obviously, we needed to play way better. We lost a lot of battles and I think we gave them too much room in our own zone. I think their breakouts were way too easy, we didn’t work hard enough. I think second period we come out and we do a better job, but still have a couple levels to reach. Third period, I think we [were] working hard, battling, winning pucks. POSTGAME NOTES & QUOTES TORONTO MAPLE LEAFS 5, COLORADO AVALANCHE 3 NOVEMBER 23, 2019 The way we played in the third period, that’s the way we have to start the game and finish the game. We have to go through 60 minutes and do that job and unfortunately, we just didn’t get one at the end there. Nate’s (Col- orado C Nathan MacKinnon) was close. Yeah, we were battling but it didn’t go our way.” On Gaining Momentum Late In The Third Period: “We talked about that and if we get one, they are going to get nervous and we got to get momentum if we get one and we got one and then we just tried to stay in it, try to get one again. I think everyone was working hard too to get that third goal, whatever it was, fourth goal. Yeah, I think we just have to step up and be ready. Our start [tonight] wasn’t good enough.” Toronto D Tyson Barrie On Returning To Colorado: “I wasn’t sure how I was going to feel coming back here, but it’s been an amazing place to call home the last eight years and [the standing ovation] really topped it off. It will always be special to me, and these fans are great. It’s a great hockey club over here so it’s going to be a lot of fun to watch for a lot of years.” On His Goal: “It was great. I’m on that side as a one-timer, and I’m just trying to be a threat. It was a great pass by Willy (Toronto C William Nylander) and it felt really good to get that one here. Not that there’s any ill will with this team, but it just, you know, coming home in front of all of the familiar faces, it’s nice to get one.” Toronto C Auston Matthews On Tonight’s Game: “I think it just took us a couple shifts just to get our legs going. Obviously, they had their first shift there buzzing around and I thought we had a good response. We got a couple of big goals and just tried to put our foot on the gas. It kind of got away from us a little in the second and third and I think that is just going through the process of changing things up, kind of on the fly. I think it will be good to get a few practice days in before we get on the road again to kind of dial some things in.” On Toronto’s Second Goal: “It was good for us, good for Bares (Toronto D Tyson Barrie) to get a big goal coming back here in a place that he spent a lot of time. That gave us some jump as well, and like I said, we got a couple big goals today to get us back in the lead.” .
