  • Official List of Public Waters
Official List of Public Waters New Hampshire Department of Environmental Services Water Division Dam Bureau 29 Hazen Drive PO Box 95 Concord, NH 03302-0095 (603) 271-3406 https://www.des.nh.gov NH Official List of Public Waters Revision Date October 9, 2020 Robert R. Scott, Commissioner Thomas E. O’Donovan, Division Director OFFICIAL LIST OF PUBLIC WATERS Published Pursuant to RSA 271:20 II (effective June 26, 1990) IMPORTANT NOTE: Do not use this list for determining water bodies that are subject to the Comprehensive Shoreland Protection Act (CSPA). The CSPA list is available on the NHDES website. Public waters in New Hampshire are prescribed by common law as great ponds (natural waterbodies of 10 acres or more in size), public rivers and streams, and tidal waters. These common law public waters are held by the State in trust for the people of New Hampshire. The State holds the land underlying great ponds and tidal waters (including tidal rivers) in trust for the people of New Hampshire. Generally, but with some exceptions, private property owners hold title to the land underlying freshwater rivers and streams, and the State has an easement over this land for public purposes. Several New Hampshire statutes further define public waters as including artificial impoundments 10 acres or more in size, solely for the purpose of applying specific statutes. Most artificial impoundments were created by the construction of a dam, but some were created by actions such as dredging or as a result of urbanization (usually due to the effect of road crossings obstructing flow and increased runoff from the surrounding area).

  • Partnership Opportunities for Lake-Friendly Living Service Providers NH LAKES Lakesmart Program
Partnership Opportunities for Lake-Friendly Living Service Providers NH LAKES LakeSmart Program Only with YOUR help will New Hampshire’s lakes remain clean and healthy, now and in the future. The health of our lakes, and our enjoyment of these irreplaceable natural resources, is at risk. Polluted runoff water from the landscape is washing into our lakes, causing toxic algal blooms that make swimming in lakes unsafe. Failing septic systems and animal waste washed off the land are contributing bacteria to our lakes that can make people and pets who swim in the water sick. Toxic products used in the home, on lawns, and on roadways and driveways are also reaching our lakes, poisoning the water in some areas to the point where fish and other aquatic life cannot survive. NH LAKES has found that most property owners don’t know how their actions affect the health of lakes. We’ve also found that property owners want to do the right thing to help keep the lakes they enjoy clean and healthy and that they often need help of professional service providers like YOU! What is LakeSmart? The LakeSmart program is an education, evaluation, and recognition program that inspires property owners to live in a lake- friendly way, keeping our lakes clean and healthy. The program is free, voluntary, and non-regulatory. Through a confidential evaluation process, property owners receive tailored recommendations about how to implement lake-friendly living practices year-round in their home, on their property, and along and on the lake. Property owners have access to a directory of lake- friendly living service providers to help them adopt lake-friendly living practices.

  • Historical Wolfeboro
2019 Wolfeboro Master Plan Wolfeboro NH in 1889 Photo Courtesy: The Write Stuff Graphic Design and Printing HISTORICAL WOLFEBORO Wolfeboro claims to be the oldest summer resort in America because New Hampshire’s Colonial Governor, John Wentworth, built his country estate here in 1769. Sadly, he enjoyed his 3600 acre property for only a few years. As a Loyalist, he fled when the American Revolution began, and his home on the shores of what would later be named Lake Wentworth. His home burned in 1820, the same year he died. Now the cellar hole and surrounding land is a state-owned historic site, and the road leading past it is memorialized as the Governor John Wentworth Highway. Long before, however, the Abenaki tribe ranged throughout central NH. Their trails circled Lake Winnipesaukee and fanned out to other lakes and along river valleys where fish and game were plentiful. The Libby Museum displays two dug-out canoes from Rust Pond found in the 1950s. The native american presence had largely disappeared by the mid-18th century, however. Wolfeboro’s proprietors granted land in 1759 to a group of men who agreed to settle the town, and named it in honor of General James Wolfe, a hero at the battle of Quebec that year. The first permanent settlers of Wolfeboro arrived in 1768, the same year that Wentworth began clearing land for his estate. Surrounding towns were settled about the same time. Arts and Heritage 22 2019 Wolfeboro Master Plan By 1775, Wolfeboro’s population numbered 211. The falls along the Smith River powered both a saw mill and grist mill, and there were other settlement clusters in North Wolfeboro, Wolfeboro Center, and Pleasant Valley.

Ver 8/5/2013 CHAPTER 8: NATURAL RESOURCES Photo: Kamal Nath 76 Ver 8/5/2013 8.1. Introduction Effingham Conservation Commission (ECC) assembled a Natural Resources Inventory in 2007. At its simplest, a Natural Resources Inventory (NRI) is an identification, description and compilation of a given Town’s Natural Resources based on maps and scientific data. Chapter 8 of this Master Plan is based on the 2007 NRI. The entire NRI is available in the appendix of this document. The primary focus of the Natural Resources chapter is to identify the natural resources in the town of Effingham, recognize the role these resources play in giving the Town its character and decide what strategies would best maintain this character (see Section 8.9 titled Natural Resource Goals). All of the community’s resources are interconnected and any change to one can have a significant impact on the others. As the population increases, demands on many of these resources will increase, possibly to the point of threatening the quality and quantity of the resource. The goal of this Natural Resources Inventory is to help develop a balance between development and resource protection within Effingham that will guide future sustainable development of the community. Below is a summary of a few features of the natural resources in Effingham. Table 1: Effingham Land and Water Distribution Type Acres Total Town Area 25,555.9 (39.9 sq. mi.) Total Land Area 24,827.0 Total Water Area 728.9 Total Hydric Area 6,461.3 Total NWI Area 4,094.8 Acreages for land area, water, hydric soils and National Wetland Inventory (NWI) wetlands provided by NH GRANIT (http://www.granit.sr.unh.edu/).
