NEW YORK FebruaryVANGUARD 2010 | No. 94 Your FREE Monthly JAZZ Guide to the New ORCHESTRA York Jazz Scene newyork.allaboutjazz.com a band in the vanguard Ron McClure • Harris Eisenstadt • Sackville • Event Calendar NEW YORK We have settled quite nicely into that post-new-year, post-new-decade, post- winter-jazz-festival frenzy hibernation that comes so easily during a cold New York City winter. It’s easy to stay home, waiting for spring and baseball and New York@Night promising to go out once it gets warm. 4 But now is not the time for complacency. There are countless musicians in our fair city that need your support, especially when lethargy seems so appealing. To Interview: Ron McClure quote our Megaphone this month, written by pianist Steve Colson, music is meant 6 by Donald Elfman to help people “reclaim their intellectual and emotional lives.” And that is not hard to do in a city like New York, which even in the dead of winter, gives jazz Artist Feature: Harris Eisenstadt lovers so many choices. Where else can you stroll into the Village Vanguard 7 by Clifford Allen (Happy 75th Anniversary!) every Monday and hear a band with as much history as the Vanguard Jazz Orchestra (On the Cover). Or see as well-traveled a bassist as On The Cover: Vanguard Jazz Orchestra Ron McClure (Interview) take part in the reunion of the legendary Lookout Farm 9 by George Kanzler quartet at Birdland? How about supporting those young, vibrant artists like Encore: Lest We Forget: drummer Harris Eisenstadt (Artist Feature) whose bands and music keep jazz relevant and exciting? 10 Svend Asmussen Joe Maneri In addition to the above, this month includes a Lest We Forget on the late by Ken Dryden by Clifford Allen saxophonist Joe Maneri, honored this month with a tribute concert at the Irondale Center in Brooklyn.

NEW YORK May 2008 | No. 73 Your FREE Monthly Guide to the New York Jazz Scene newyork.allaboutjazz.com AHMAD JAMAL IT'S MAGIC Vince Giordano • George Garzone • Les Disques Victo • Dizzy’s Club • Event Calendar NEW YORK May is significant in the history of Miles Davis. Not only is the 26th the late trumpeter’s birthday but many of his most enduring works were New York@Night recorded during this month, including the Charlie Parker All-Stars (1948); the 4 Miles Davis-Tadd Dameron Quintet’s run in Paris (1949), most of the Workin’, Steamin’ and Relaxin’ triumvirate by the quintet with John Coltrane (1956), Miles Interview: Vince Giordano Ahead and At Carnegie Hall, both with the Gil Evans Orchestra (1957 and 1961 6 by Michael Hittman respectively); and the bulk of Miles in the Sky (1968). Now in May 2008, another chapter to the Miles Legacy will be written with an ambitious concert at Town Artist Feature: George Garzone Hall May 9th, “Miles From India”. A companion concert to a just-released album 7 by Matthew Miller of the same name, the concert brings together musicians who played with the legend throughout his career as well as a number of classical Indian musicians for Label Spotlight: Les Disques Victo what is billed as a “cross-cultural summit meeting”. Our Encore this month, 8 by Kurt Gottschalk guitarist Pete Cosey, is participating in what is sure to be a monumental event. But, as is typical for New York, the happenings don’t stop happening there. Club Profile: Dizzy’s Club Pianist Ahmad Jamal (Cover) brings his trio to Blue Note in a pre-release by Laurel Gross celebration of his first new album in three years, It’s Magic (Birdology-Dreyfus), due out in June.

  • PREAMBLE for a SOLEMN OCCASION Aaron Copland
The United States Army Field Band The Musical Ambassadors of the Army Washington, DC An Educator’s Guide to the Music of Aaron Copland PREAMBLE FOR A SOLEMN OCCASION Aaron Copland PICCOLO • Measures 78–80 (first version) or 76–78 (second version): Leave out the Piccolo part. This part doubles the Flute an octave higher. As a result of thin scoring and distance of players from each other, this passage is very difficult to play quietly enough and be in tune. FLUTE • Measures 78–80 (first version) or 76–78 (second version): Experiment with alternate fingerings to match pitch with the Trumpet CLARINET 1st Clarinet • Cut to half section in all tutti altissimo parts, i.e., measures 15–33 2nd Clarinet • Measures 63–64: Do not play the descending line • Measures 18, 21, 24, and 27: TACET • Measure 69: Delete 3/2 time signature ALTO CLARINET • Measures 69–72: This section is in unison with Bass Clarinet, Alto Saxophone, and 1st Bassoon. It is written high for all three instruments, so intonation can be a problem. This passage needs to be isolated so the players can adjust. It may be wise to leave out the Bassoon, as it is covered in other parts. An Educator’s Guide... 1 Preamble for a Solemn Occasion BASSOON • Measures 69–71: Watch intonation between 1st and 2nd Bassoons SAXOPHONE • Alto Saxophone, measures 69–72: perform with one Alto Saxophone only. Intonation between the Alto Saxophone, Tenor Saxophone, Bassoon, Alto Clarinet, and Bass Clarinet is difficult, but critical to this passage. Isolate and rehearse this section until intonation is satisfactory.

  • Class 1 – Instrumentation Suggested Skills
The composition criteria for MSHSAA sight reading selections were revised in 2002-2003, when music expanded from four to five classes. As a result, the committee determined that it would be beneficial to music directors throughout the state to have this criterion available to assist in preparations for sight reading. With this information in hand, directors will have a better understanding of the difficulty of the selection that will be used and will know what to expect in regard to rhythms, ranges, time signatures, etc. Class 1 – Instrumentation 1 Flute/Oboe/Mallets parts 2 Bb Clarinet parts 1 Bb Bass Clarinet/Bassoon (doubled in bass part) 1 Eb Contra Bass Clarinet 1 Eb Alto Saxophone 1 Tenor Saxophone 1 Baritone Saxophone 2 Bb Trumpet parts 1 French horn in F part 1 Trombone part (doubled in Tenor Saxophone) 1 Baritone (treble and bass clef parts provided) 1 Bass part (doubled in Bassoon, Bb and Eb Bass Clarinets, Baritone Sax and TC & BC Baritone) 1 Percussion (snare drum, bass drum, cymbals and optional tympani) Suggested Skills Ranges Octave and a third (within the established key signature) Keys F, Bb, Eb, and relative minors Meters 2/4, 3/4, 4/4 Rhythms Dotted quarter/eighth; straight 16ths; simple syncopation at m.m. 88-92 Percussion Bass drum, snare drum, cymbal is required. • Alto Clarinet: the Endangered Species of the American Band Mark Wolbers, University of Alaska Anchorage CBDNA 2011 National Conference
Alto Clarinet: The Endangered Species of the American Band Mark Wolbers, University of Alaska Anchorage CBDNA 2011 National Conference Introduction In regards to jokes, the alto clarinet of the band is the viola equivalent of the orchestra. Both instruments will get you handicapped parking if you put the case on the dash of your car. However, unlike the viola in the orchestra, American music educators have done their best to get the alto clarinet removed from the wind band. In this regard, they have been quite successful. In the United States, music publishers of new band works do not include parts for alto clarinet and no longer consider the instrument a part of the standard band instrumentation. American composers, also sensing their market, no longer write parts for the instrument. This of course, has had ramifications beyond publishing. Instrument manufacturers, seeing a decline in the American school band market for alto clarinets have scaled back research and development. Yamaha hasn’t revised or improved their alto clarinet design since 1988. Selmer’s design has also not fundamentally changed since the 80s. Because demand for bassethorns is the majority of the new instrument market in this range of clarinet, they seem to be a bit more up to date design-wise. In this regard, the bassethorns are perhaps a technically better instrument than the alto clarinets in this study. Bassethorns, however, are not a perfect solution either since they require the player to transpose when reading an alto clarinet part. If a band director programs a work written prior to 1980, chances are good that they may have to deal with an alto clarinet part.
