WHO and UNICEF have warned of an alarming decline in the number of children receiving

life-saving vaccines around the world. This is due to disruptions in the delivery and uptake of immunization services caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. These disruptions threaten to reverse hard-won progress to reach more children and adolescents with a wider range of vaccines, which has already been hampered by a decade of stalling coverage. Vaccines can be delivered safely even during the pandemic. Health workers should encourage caregivers to complete immunization for their children.

Opening schools during community transition

Researchers have concluded through various modelling techniques that frequent testing is the key to reopening schools and campuses. The assumption is of the number of infections that would arise among 5,000 students during an 80- day term/semester, given that 5 new cases would be imported each week and that each infected student would infect 2.5 others. To keep infections to around 135 over the term, testing students every 2 days with a rapid and relatively cheap test would be key, otherwise there would be an explosive growth in infections.
