ISRO’s UNNATI programme inaugurated by MoSDoSDr.Jitendra Singh in Bengaluru On January 17, 2019, Minister of State in Dr.Jitendra Singh inaugurated the 1st batch of UNNATI programme of Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) in Bengaluru, Karnataka. i. The full form of UNNATI is: Unispace Nanosatellite Assembly and Training programme. ii. It has been launched by ISRO as part of initiative by United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the first United Nations Conference on the Exploration and Peaceful Uses of Outer Space (UNISPACE-50). About UNNATI: i. Under the 1st batch of the program, will provide 2 months training to 32 participants from 18 countries from Algeria, Argentina, Azerbaijan, Bhutan, Brazil, Chile, Egypt, Ethiopia, Indonesia, Kazakhstan, Malaysia, Mexico, Mongolia, Morocco, Myanmar, Oman, Panama and Portugal. ii. The participants were selected from 87 applications from 34 countries. iii. Overall, the programme would be conducted for 3 years by U.R. Omega Healthcare inks MoU with IIIT- For advanced use of latest technology in providing healthcare solutions. Services signed a pact with IIIT- Bangalore On January 21, 2019,Omega Healthcare Management i. This MoU was signed to build industry-grade AI engines that can be embedded as part of Omega’s business solutions to solve healthcare business challenges ii. The pact also enhanced research programmes in artificial intelligence (AI) and Data Science, aimed to focus on specific business-related processes.

South India MSME summit 2019 held in Bengaluru,India On January 17, 2019,Karnataka Small Scale Industries Association (KASSIA) organized the South India MSME Summit-2019 at Bengaluru,India. i. Basavaraj S Javali(President, KASSIA) chaired the event. ii. Bengaluru pipped to top list of world’s most dynamic cities: 6th City Momentum Index by JLL On January 15, 2019, according to the 6th City Momentum Index, released by property consultant JLL, Bengaluru has emerged as the world’s most dynamic city with a robust technology and innovation ecosystem in place. About the Report: i. The report is titled: ‘JLL City Momentum: The World’s Top 20 Most Dynamic Cities’. ii. The 2019 edition of the survey was conducted on 131 cities over a period of 3 years. iii. The key theme in this year’s index was cities having a robust technology and innovation ecosystem. Highlights: i. Among other Indian cities, Hyderabad ranked second with Delhi at fourth, at fifth, at seventh and Kolkata at fifteenth position featuring in top 20 cities. ii. 19 of the top 20 cities ranked were from Asia Pacific region. iii. The other cities include Hanoi at the third position, Nairobi at 6th, Ho Chi Minh City at 8th Xi’an at 9th Guangzhou at 10th.

Lingappa Narayana Swamy appointed Karnataka HC acting Chief Justice On 17th January 2019, the President of India Shri Ram NathKovind under Article 223 of the Constitution appointed Justice Lingappa Narayana Swamy as the Acting Chief Justice of the Karnataka High Court. Key Points: i. He was appointed Acting Chief Justice of the Karnataka High Court following the elevation of the incumbent Chief Justice Dinesh Maheshwari to the Supreme Court. ii. Justice Swamy who began his career as an Advocate in 1987 and practiced in the Karnataka High Court is presently the senior most Judge of the Karnataka High Court. iii. He was appointed as an Additional Judge of the Karnataka High Court in 2007 and was made a permanent judge in 2009.

Bengaluru Raptors win title On 13th January 2019, the beat Rockets by 4-3 in the final of the Premier Badminton League (PBL) 2019 at the Kanteerava Indoor Stadium in Bengaluru to win their maiden title. Key Points: i. KidambiSrikanth, Vu Ji Trang and the Men’s Doubles pair of Mohammad Ahsan and Hendra Satiawan won their matches for Bengaluru guiding them to victory. ii. Women’s National Boxing Championships: Lovlina wins gold medal, Manisha settles for silver On 6th January 2019, World Championship bronze medallist Assam’s LovlinaBorgohain claimed the gold medal while Haryana boxer Manisha Moun had to settle with silver at the Women’s National Boxing Championships held at the JSW Sports’ Inspire Institute of Sports, , Karnataka. Key Points: i. LovlinaBorgohain of Assam won the gold in 69 kg category bout. ii. Manisha Moun lost to Meenakumari of All India Police (AIP) in the finals of 54 kg class. iii. Veteran actor CH Loknath passed away at 91 On January 1, 2019, Veteran Kannada actor C H Loknath died at 91. i. Former defence minister George Fernandes passed away On January 29, 2019,former defence minister GerogeFernandes breath his last due to prolonged illness of Alzhemier’sdisease.He passed away at the age of 88. i. He served as the Defence Minister in the year 1998 ii. During his regime as the Defence Minister,Fernandes oversaw the Pokhran nuclear tests of 1998 and the Kargil war in 1999.

Union Minister Dr. Harsh Vardhan inaugurated the North Karnataka Agromet Forecasting and Research Centre (NKAFC) in Dharwad, Karnataka Union Minister for Science & Technology, Earth Sciences, Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Dr. Harsh Vardhan, inaugurated the North Karnataka Agromet Forecasting and Research Centre (NKAFC), India’s first agromet forecast centre, at University of Agricultural Sciences (UAS) in Dharwad, Karnataka. i. The main objective of the centre is to give accurate reports on weather which would enable the farmers to protect the crops and get good yield. It will also educate farmers on how to manage the crops in different weather conditions and help them anticipate and plan their actions in advance. ii. About 25 lakh farmers in the region would be kept updated with information via various platforms like WhatsApp, SMS, social networking sites and community radio stations. Prime Minister Visited Hubli in Karnataka On 10th February 2019, Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited Hubli in Karnataka on the final leg of one day long his tri state visit of Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu to initiate various development projects. Highlights i. City Gas Distribution Project was inaugurated by Prime Minister, Narendra Modi in Dharwad. ii. Doubling of 18 km long Chikjajur-Mayakonda Section which is a part of 190 km long Hubli-Chikjajur Doubling Project, was proposed by Narendra Modi. Foundation Stone of IIT Dharwad and IIIT Dharwad Prime minister has unveiled a plaque to mark the laying of foundation stone for construction of building campus for Indian Institute of Technology at a cost of Rs. 12,00 crore and Indian Institute of Information Technology at a cost of Rs. 110 Crore, both at Dharwad, Hubli.

Overview of the 12th Aero-India 2019 held in Bangalore Defence Minister Smt Nirmala Sitharaman inaugurated the 12th biennial edition of International Aerospace and Defence Exhibition, the Aero India 2019 on 24th February 2019 at the Air Force Station Yelahanka in Bengaluru.The event was organized by the Defence Ministry of India, Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), , Department of Space and the Union Civil Aviation Ministry. Key points • This edition of Aero India, for the first time, combined the defence and civil aviation segments into a holistic event with the co-involvement of the defence and civil aviation ministries in the event. • More than 600 Indian Companies and 200 Foreign Companies participated and witnessed the largest Air show of Asia. • The theme of the event was “‘Runway to a Billion Opportunities”.The logo of the exhibition was inspired by the Tejas Light Combat Aircraft (LCA). India and Singapore sign agreement for skilling Indians in aviation • National Skill Development Corporation of India’s (NSDC) Aerospace and Aviation Sector Skill Council in collaboration with Singapore Polytechnic and Singapore-based private sector firm signed an agreement for skilling the Indian youths in the aviation sector by setting up academies in Bengaluru that will be the regional hubs for the training the youth for domestic and overseas jobs in aviation. • These ‘Centers of Excellence in Advance Skilling‘ will provide training and certification drawing from Singapore curriculum and standards in sectors such as aerospace and aviation, emerging technologies, automotive and logistics. • This is done under the ‘Skill India‘ and ‘Make in India‘ programmes, which require large workforce with advanced technical skills. PV Sindhu became the first woman to co-pilot Tejas • Indian badminton player and Olympic silver-medallist PV Sindhu co-piloted the indigenously made combat fighter jet “Tejas”at the Aero India 2019 as part of the Women’s Day observed at the air show, becoming the first ever woman to co-pilot Tejas. • The Women’s Day showcased women’s achievements in the aerospace sector, and an all-women crew flew Dornier and Avro aircraft and participated in panel discussions. • 3 women Indian Air Force (IAF) fighter pilots also flew the Hawk-I advanced jet trainer of BAE Systems (England) and an upgraded version of the Russian-made MiG-21. Maiden Drone Olympics Competition held at Aero India 2019 • A major highlight of the Aero India 2019, was the first-ever “Drone Olympics” for Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs), in which national and international players demonstrated their potential. • More than 120 applications were received for the event, out of which 57 applicants who were found suitable and were invited to participate. • The competition saw a number of innovative solutions and use of the latest technological advancements by the participants and the winners of each competition were honoured with medals and cash prizes. • The winners of the competition are invited to demonstrate the best of human machine interaction during Lockheed Martin’s Alpha Pilot Race in United States later in 2019. • Team ‘Dhaksha’ of Centre for Aerospace Research, MIT Campus, Anna University in Chennai won the first place in the ‘surveillance hybrid design’ category. • Dhaksha’ has already performed several missions for surveillance for disaster management during the 2015 Chennai floods. BEL Launched Atmospheric Water Generator safe Drinking Water, Straight From the Air • Navratna Defence PSU Bharat Electronics Ltd (BEL) unveiled the Atmospheric Water Generator (AWG), an innovative solution to meet the ever-increasing need for drinking water worldwide. • Chief of the Army Staff General BipinRawat, inaugurated the AWG in the presence of, Chairman and Managing Director BELShri MV Gowtama, Directors and other senior officers of BEL. • BEL’s Atmospheric Water Generator can be used to generate water straight from the humidity present in the atmosphere. It uses heat exchange for condensing the atmospheric moisture to produce pure, safe and clean potable water. • It comes with a Mineralisation Unit, which is used to add minerals which are required to make the water potable. • It is configurable in static and mobile (vehicular) versions and is available in 30 litres/day, 100 litres/day, 500 litres/day and 1,000 litres/day capacities and can be used to provide drinking water in community centres and public places. • It is being manufactured by BEL in collaboration with Indian Institute of Chemical Technology: Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR-IICT) and MAITHRI, a start-up company based in Hyderabad and was on display at theBEL stall at Hall-E at Aero India 2019. ISRO launched Human Space Flight Centre in Bengaluru On 30th January 2019, Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) launched the Human Space Flight Centre (HSFC) which will act as the hub of ISRO’s future manned missions at the headquarters of ISRO in Bengaluru, Karnataka. Key Points i. India’s first manned mission was announced on 15th August 2018 and it is set to happen by 2022 which is going to be the 75th year of Independence. ii. Former ISRO chairman K. Kasturirangan unveiled the full scale model of ’s crew module in the presence of ISRO’s chairman K. Sivan. iii. S. Unnikrishnan Nair and R. Hutton was declared as the founder Director of HSFC and Project Director of Gaganyaan respectively by ISRO chairman Dr. K. Sivan.

India’s LCA Tejas gets clearance for induction into IAF On 19th February 2019, Final Operational Clearance(FOC) was granted by the Centre for Military Airworthiness and Certification (Cemilac), to Tejas– India’s Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) for induction into the Indian Air Force (IAF). It will be inducted as a weaponised fighter jet. The announcement was made at Aero India 2019 in Bengaluru, Karnataka. Key points: i. Tejas is India’s first indigenously made fighter jet. ii. It performed air-to-ground attacks and air-to-air refuelling at IAF’s Vayu Shakti air display at Pokhran in Rajasthan on February 16. iii. Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd(HAL) plans to deliver 16 Tejas LCA by the end of the year.

‘Jal Amrutha’ scheme launched by Karnataka Government A water conservation scheme ‘Jal Amrutha’ was launched by Karnataka chief minister H D Kumaraswamy, in Bengaluru. For the purpose of inauguration of the scheme, a function was organized by the Rural Development and Panchayat Raj department at Dr B R AmbedkarBhavan in Bengaluru. The scheme plans to make people aware about the importance of conserving water and to prompt them to come up with ways to avoid wastage of water. Key points i. The scheme will involve undertaking scientific approaches such as water budgeting, water harvesting and water conservation through the use of geospatial data, satellite imagery, topographical and geological data. It is going to be a community-initiative, and will be undertaken by important government departments, Panchayat Raj Institutions (PRIs), non-governmental organisations (NGOs), and private sector institutions. ii. 2019 has been declared as ‘Jalavarsha (year of water)’. iii. Karnataka is the second-largest drought prone state in the country, after Rajasthan. iv. Bengaluru zilla panchayat provided monetary help amounting to Rs 95 lakhs to support flood victims of Kodagu.

HGS and NASSCOM to launch centre of excellence for PwDs in Bangalore Hinduja Global Solutions (HGS) partnered with NASSCOM Foundation, to launch a centre of excellence in Bengaluru for training differently-abled persons (PwDs) which will train a minimum of 100 PwDs making them industry-ready over the next 12 months with a goal to place at least 50% of them in companies already sensitised for hiring them. i. The trainees will be skilled in a variety of job roles suitable for hospitality, IT or BPM and retail industries and will also be trained on soft skills, interview skills, communication skills, and English language. ii. This is third such centre set up under the partnership, after Noida and Delhi.

Paralympics high jumper Girish Gowda named as Ambassador of Karnataka LS Elections Silver Medalist in Paralympic high jump, Girish Gowda has been appointed as the ambassador of Karnataka Lok Sabha Elections 2019. i. He represented India in men’s high jump F-42 category during 2012 Summer Paralympics games held in London, where he clinched silver medal. With that, he became the first Indian to win medal in this category. ii. The state is arranging all kind of assistance for Persons with Disabilities so that they can excercise their right comfortably. Centre has set up Yarn bank in Karnataka for weavers of Powerloom Silk Manufacturers Cooperative Society In order to avoid fluctuation in yarn prices, Ministry of Textiles has started Yarn bank, a first of its kind in Karnataka, to help thousand of weavers at the Mysore Powerloom Silk Manufacturers Cooperative Society by ensuring steady supply of silk yarn and zari. i. The Centre aided bank will purchase yarn at the wholesale rate from producers, then it will be sold to the subscribing weavers at reasonable rates to sustain production. ii. Currently, the weavers from southern Karnataka have to source yarn locally through agents and wholesalers.

Special Expenditure Observers for States of Andhra Pradesh, Arunachal Pradesh, Gujarat, Karnataka, Nagaland and Telangana, have been appointed by Election Commission of India On 26th March 2019, Election Commission of India has appointed Sh. Gopal Mukherjee as Special Expenditure Observers for the state of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana and Sh. D.D. The Arcea nut “Sirsi Supari” gets a GI tag ‘Sirsi Supari’ cultivated in Yellapura, Siddapura and Sirsi talukas of Uttar Kannada, Karnataka, has received the Geographic Indication (GI) tag which is the first time in the areca nut sector. i. For the first time ISRO launched a 2-week long summer vacation residential programme termed ‘India Young Scientist Programme’ (Yuvika-2019) ISRO launched a maiden 2-week long (13th May 2019 to 26th May 2019) summer vacation residential programme termed ‘India Young Scientist Programme’ (Yuvika-2019) or ‘YuvaVaigyanicKaryakram’ in line with the central government’s vision of ‘Jai Vigyan, Jai Anusandhan’. This two-week-long programme is regarded as “Catch them young”. The selected students from 29 states and 7 Union Territories across India would be able to avail this novel programme. Key Points: i. ISRO’s (Indian Space Research Organisation) Chairman Dr K Sivan inaugurated the Young Scientist Programme (Yuvika-2019) through video mode from ISRO headquarters at Bengaluru. ii. The students are selected based on their performance in the 8th Standard (CBSE, ICSE and State syllabus) and this includes their performance in academic as well as extracurricular activities. iii. The selected students will be provided with course material that’s already been pre-loaded on Tablets. The course programme includes topics like a Rocket engine, Environment science, Astronomy, Space applications, Renewable Energy so on and so forth. iv. The selected students are attending the residential training programme at ISRO’s 4 centres, namely, • Space Centre, , Kerala • , Bengaluru • Space Applications Centre (SAC), , Gujarat • North Eastern Space Applications Centre (NESAC), Shillong, Meghalaya. v. As a part of the programme, the selected students will also visit the Space Centre spaceport to understand spaceport operations. Centre issued Drought Advisory to six states Recently, centre has issued a “drought advisory” to six states named Maharashtra, Gujarat, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and Tamil Nadu due to water storage in dams dropped to a “critical level”. Centre has asked these 6 six states to use water judiciously. Key Highlights i. Central Water Commission (CWC) always issues drought advisory whenever the water level in reservoirs is 20 percent less than the average of live water storage figures of the past 10 years. ii. According to figures released by CWC, the total water storage available was 35.99 billion cubic metres, which is 22 percent of the total storage capacity of these reservoirs. About CWC : It functions as an attached office of Ministry of Water Resources, River Development and Ganga Rejuvenation, Government of India, and monitors total water storage available in 91 major reservoirs across the country.

Karnataka Government limits the weight of school bags not more than 10% of the child’s weight Karnataka government issued a circular, following the order of the Union Ministry of Human Resource Development, directing all schools in the state, including government, aided and unaided institutions, to limit the weight of a schoolbag which is not more than 10% of the child’s weight. Key Points: i. The weight of a bag of a student in Class 1 or 2 should not be more than 2 kg and these students should not be given any homework. ii. For the students from Class 3 to 5, it can weigh between 2 and 3 kg. iii. The weight increases accordingly, with the students of Class 9 and 10 are allowed to carry bags of weight 4-5kg. iv. The third Saturday of every month should be followed as “No School Bag Day”. Teachers are required to keep the students busy without any books or supplementary materials and indulge in activities like field visits, general knowledge clubs, art classes, indoor and outdoor games, abacus, dance classes and debates. v. Schools have been asked to make provisions for drinking water facilities so students don’t have to carry water bottles which eases their daily load. Also, management have been directed to create awareness about carrying heavy school bags.

BasavaJayanti 2019 observed on May 7 On 7th May 2019, BasavaJayanthi was celebrated in Karnataka, Maharashtra and Andhra Pradesh to commemorate the birth of Basavanna, a Hindu Kannada poet of the 12th century. ISRO’s new commercial arm ‘NewSpace India Limited inaugurated in Bengaluru Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has inaugurated its new commercial arm ‘NewSpace India Limited’ (NSIL) in Bengaluru, Karnataka. The objective of the new commercial arm is to scale up industry participation in Indian space programmes. NSIL was inaugurated by Dr. K Kasturirangan, ISRO’s advisor, in the presence of ISRO’s chairman Dr. K Sivan. Key Highlights i. On March 6, 2019, NSIL was incorporated for the purpose of utilising research and development activities carried out by ISRO in the area of space with an authorized share capital of Rs 100 crore and initial paid up capital of Rs 10 crore. ii. 83-year old renowned singer, ‘bhagawatha’ Nebburu Narayana Hegde passed away in Nebburu, The 83-year old renowned singer, Yakshagana ‘bhagawatha’ Nebburu Narayana Hegde breathed his last, at his residence in Nebburu in Sirsi Taluk of Uttara Kannada, Mengaluru, Karnataka. Lingappa passed away at the age of 95 in Bengaluru, Karnataka.He is a resident of Bengaluru. i. He represented Mysore in National Games for seven years consecutively and qualified as a walker in the 1954 Manila Asian Games but the event was cancelled. ii. Karnataka government launches E-Step, a programme for student entrepreneurs The Department of Information Technology (IT), Biotechnology (BT) and Science & Technology (ST) of Karnataka government launched E-Step, an initiative to empower student start-ups. The programme is a part of Karnataka Innovation and Technology Society (KITS). Key Points: i. The programme is specially designed for students/ startups/entrepreneurs to understand the basics of entrepreneurship from experienced trainers. ii. Former MLA, Umesh Bhat Bhavikeri passed away in Bengaluru On August 13, 2019, Former Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) of Ankola (Karnataka) from 1989 to 1994 and a Congress leader, Umesh Bhat Bhavikeri, aged 72, passed away due to a heart attack in Bengaluru, Karnataka. Former Karnataka BJP president and senior advocate A K Subbaiah passed away AjjikuttiraKariappa (AK) Subbaiah, the former Karnataka Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) president and senior advocate has passed away in Bengaluru, Karnataka after a brief illness. He was 85. i. Born in Virajpet town of Karnataka in 1936, Subbaiah was an advocate by profession before entering politics.

ii. A K Subbaiah served as the Congress Member of the Legislative Council between 1988 and 1994. Prior to this, he was the first Karnataka state President of the BJP. iii. He has also written books including a book on the RSS (RashtriyaSwayamsevakSangh) titled “RSS Antharanga” in Kannada.

Karnataka tops in State Rooftop Solar Attractiveness Index(SARAL) 2019 On 21 August 2019, RK Singh, the Union Minister of State for Power and New & Renewable Energy (IC) and Skill Development & Entrepreneurship has launched the State Rooftop Solar Attractiveness Index 2019 (SARAL) at the Review Planning and Monitoring (RPM) Meeting with States and State Power Utilities in . Key points: i. SARAL Index: As per the Index, Karnataka got the top spot with SARAL score of 78.8 as the best state for setting up a rooftop solar project followed by Telangana(72.2), Gujarat(67.9) and Andra Pradesh(66.1). Jammu and Kashmir(J&K) has been ranked last with a score of 14.4. All the first 4 got A++ grade. ii. Index Design: The index has been designed jointly by the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE), Shakti Sustainable Energy Foundation (SSEF), Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India (ASSOCHAM) and Ernst & Young (EY). iii. Key aspects: The index evaluates Indian states based on 5 key aspects which include, robustness of policy framework, implementation environment, investment climate, consumer experience and business ecosystem. iv. Target: The central Government has set a target of 175 GW of renewable energy capacity by 2022. Karnataka Government categorised Nicotine as “class A poison” The Government of Karnataka amended the Karnataka Poisons (Possession and Sale) Rules 2015 and notified Nicotine as “Class A poison” in order to strengthen the enforcement of the ban on production and sale of electronic cigarettes. The 4th General Assembly of the Association of World Election Bodies (A-WEB) for the year 2019 held in Bengaluru The Election Commission of India (ECI) hosted the 4th General Assembly of the Association of World Election Bodies (A-WEB) for the year 2019. It was held in Bengaluru, Karnataka from September 2-4, 2019. India took over as A-WEB’s Chair for the 2019-21 term.

IRCTC & KSTDC signs MoU to operate Golden chariot train in South India On November 19, 2019, Indian Railway Catering & Tourism Corporation Limited (IRCTC), a tourism arm of Indian Railways, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Karnataka State Tourism Development Corporation (KSTDC) to market and operate the Golden Chariot Train. This luxury train of 18 coaches will have 44 guest rooms & places like to Bandipur, Mysore, Chikmagalur, , have been included in its route. It will start from March 2020. Key Points: i.This train will provide a sightseeing tour of South India (Karnataka, Kerala, Puducherry and other south Indian states) involving history, , and wildlife. ii.The Golden Chariot started operations in 2008. The Karnataka government had been running this train for nearly 10 years. iii.Currently, Rajasthan Tourism Development Corporation (RTDC), Maharashtra Tourism Development Corporation (MTDC), KSTDC, and IRCTC run luxury trains in India. iv. Karnataka Bank launches CASA campaign 2019 On November 15, 2019, Karnataka Bank Ltd, an ‘A’ Class Scheduled Commercial Bank has launched a nationwide account mobilization campaign called “CASA (current account savings account) campaign of FY(fiscal year) 2019-2020”. The campaign will remain in force till February 29, 2020. Key Points: i.Objective: It has been organized with the aim to open 4.18 lakhs Current & Savings accounts by active involvement of its 8000 plus workforce in all the 846 branches across India. ii.On Nov 15, 2018, the Bank introduced a savings bank (SB) scheme ‘KBL SB – TASC (Trust, Association, Society and Club).It also launched SB product ‘KBL SB Salary’ designed with 3 variants namely, SB Salary Executive, SB Salary Prime and SB Salary Classic to cater the financial needs of an employer-employee ecosystem. iii. ADB signs $91 million loan agreement with India for comprehensive water management in Karnataka On November 18, 2019, The Government of India (GoI) & the Asian Development Bank (ADB) has signed a $ 91 million loan agreement under Karnataka Integrated and Sustainable Water Resources Management Investment Program (IWRM) to renovate the Vijayanagara Channel irrigation systems in Karnataka. The fund will also be used to prepare the river basin management plan of the Krishna River that would help in using irrigation water effectively and it would also help in sustaining the water security of the state of Karnataka. Key Points: i.It will benefit the Government in the modernization of over 442 kilometres of major and minor distributaries and canals. ii.The loan agreement was signed by Mr. Sameer Kumar Khare, Additional Secretary, Department of Economic Affairs, Ministry of Finance on behalf of Government of India & Mr. Kenichi Yokoyama, Country Director of ADB’s India Resident Mission, on behalf of ADB. AYUSH Minister Shripad Naik inaugurates 5th International conference on yoga 2019 at Mysuru, Karnataka On November 15, 2019, Shri Shripad Yesso Naik, the Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for AYUSH (Ayurveda, Yoga & Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha and Homoeopathy) and Defence has inaugurated 2- day 5th International Conference on Yoga 2019 based on the theme ‘Yoga for Heart Care’ at Karnataka state open University in Mysuru, Karnataka organized by Ministry of AYUSH. Key Points: i. It commemorate the unanimous adoption of Resolution by the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) during its 69th Session for observing June 21st as the International Day of Yoga. ii.A total of 10 technical sessions involving fifty resource persons & experts, organized during the Conference. Vd. After a long gap of 3-years, NCRB releases Farmers Suicide figures in 2016, Maharashtra tops On November 8, 2019, After a long gap of 3-years, National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) ,an Indian government agency responsible for collecting and analysing crime data, has released the 2016 report called “accidental deaths and suicides in India” with reference to farmers’ suicides. Findings: Maharashtra accounted for almost 40 % of all farmer suicides in the country in 2016 with 3,661.The state also witnessed the highest number of farmer suicides in 2014 and 2015 at 4,004 and 4,291 respectively. Key Points: i. Karnataka has the 2nd highest number of farmer suicides, with 2,079 cases in 2016 and 1,569 cases in 2015. It was followed by Madhya Pradesh (1321 death in 2016), Andhra Pradesh(804 deaths in 2016) & Chhattisgarh (682 deaths in 2016) . ii. In Telangana, such cases have reduced by half. Here 645 in 2016, 1,347 in 2014 and 1,400 farmers committed suicide in 2015. iii.The 2016 data has not been released from West Bengal . The figures were not released even in 2015, while in 2014 there were reports of suicide of 230 farmers. iv.The report states that the number of male suicides in farmers is high, while 8.6 % of female farmers have also committed suicide across the country. However, the reason for suicide has not been explained in the latest report. v. A total of 3,33,407 farmers committed suicide in an agricultural country from 1995 to 2016. The death of such a large agricultural population raises concern on the economic policies of the government. India records 26.9% reduction in maternal mortality since 2013:SRS Bulletin-2016 On November 7, 2019, As per the Sample Registration System (SRS) Bulletin-2016, The Maternal Mortality Ratio (MMR) in India has decreased by 26.9 % since 2013. The MMR between 2011-2013 was 167 which decreased to 130 between 2014 and 2016. It decreased further in 2015-17 to 122. Thus, it has decreased by 6.15 % as compared to the previous survey 2014-2016. Key Points: i. Karnataka has shown the highest percentage decline in MMR, Uttar Pradesh & Madhya Pradesh have witnessed an increase by 15 points each in MMR in 2015-17 compared to 2014-16. ii.In southern states the MMR has come down from 77 to 72 per one lakh births, while in other states the figure has come down from 93 to 90. The biggest decrease was in the Empowered Working Group (EAG) state of Assam where MMR has come down from 188 to 175. iii.To better understand maternal mortality, especially on regional basis, the government has categorized the states into EAG, South states and ‘Others’. iv. EAG states include Bihar, Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Odisha, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand and Assam. The southern states are Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Karnataka, Kerala and Tamil Nadu. The remaining states and union territories are placed in the category of ‘others’. v. The decline has been most significant in EAG States from 188 to 175 vi. The first report in India on maternal mortality was released in October 2006. The United Nations has set a target to reduce MMR below 70 per 100,000 births by 2030.

Karnataka’s Suranga Bawadi selected as World Monument Watch list for 2020 On November 12, 2019, Suranga Bawadi of Vijayapura, Karnataka, has been selected as the World Monument Watch List for 2020, by the New York-based non-governmental organisation. Suranga Bawadi was selected under the category of “Ancient Water System of the Deccan Plateau” along with 24 monuments across the world. It is one of the integral parts of the ancient Karez system of supplying water through subterranean tunnels, is now set to get funding for restoration. Heat Wave 2020: 4th Workshop on management of Heat Wave begun in Bengaluru, Karnataka On December 5, 2019, the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), in collaboration with Karnataka govt. has organised a two-day national workshop “Heat Wave 2020” on preparedness, mitigation and management of Heat Wave, in Bengaluru city of Karnataka. The workshop has been conducted well in advance of the heatwave season to manage the hot weather conditions for the year 2020. Climate change led to the rise of average summer temperature by 0.5°C in the past five years. This is the 4th annual workshop in a series that NDMA has been conducting since 2017. Key Points: i.Heat wave: A heatwave is a period of excessively hot weather, which may be accompanied by high humidity, especially in oceanic climate countries. ii.23 states in India were affected by a heatwave in 2019, which is up by 4 as only 19 states were affected in India in 2018. iii.Members present: Members and senior officials from NDMA; GV Venugopala Sarma, Member Secretary of NDMA; experts on heatwave, early warning and forecasting agencies, State governments, research institutions and members of the civil society participated in the workshop. First-ever Human Library event held in Mysuru, Karnataka On December 8, 2019 first ever Human Library Chapter 2, a concept that seeked to replace books with humans was organised in Mysuru, in Karnataka. The event was held at Mysore Institute of Commerce and Arts (MICA), in Mysuru. The aim of the human library was to create a safe framework for conversation by using a library analogy of lending people rather than books. Key Points: i.Human library is a registered international non-profit organisation headquartered in Copenhagen, Denmark. It was initially launched in 2000 and currently it exists in more than 85 countries known as ‘The Human Library Organisation’. It focuses to create a society in which everyone can coexist. 2019 World Habitat Awards for project that secured land for indigenous people in Karnataka On 12th December 2019, the Restoration of Dignity and Human Rights of Indigenous Tribal Community in Karnataka project was bestowed with a gold prize in the 2019 World Habitat Award. The project started in the year 2000 and is executed by ActionAid India with Koraga Federation and Samagra Grameena Ashrama. The award was given by the World Habitat, a UK (United Kingdom) based organization, in association with the United Nations (UN)-Habitat. Key Points: i.The ActionAid India has been working with the Koraga people and nine other tribal communities in Karnataka. It aims at supporting the indigenous communities to obtain government schemes. ii.Under the initiatives taken by the project thousand acres of land have been secured by the tribal communities and 19,000 people have obtained access to build new homes. Sahitya Akademi awardee Kannada writer Sheshagiri Rao passed away at the age of 94 On December 20, 2019, noted Kannada writer and critic L.S. Sheshagiri Rao passed away at the age of 94 due to old age ailments in Bengaluru, Karnataka. Sheshagiri is famous for his critical works and also for and an English-Kannada dictionary he compiled. His first work Idu Jeevana, an anthology of short stories was released in 1948. He is best known for his book “Hosagannada Sahitya Charitre”. Key Points: i.Born on February 16, 1925, in Bangalore, Karnataka, Mr.Rao was a retired staff from the English Department of Bangalore University in Karnataka. ii.Awards: He was honoured with Kendra in 2001 for his work English Sahitya Charitre. It is about English literature history in Kannada. His other awards include Rajyotsava Award and Karnataka Sahitya Academi award. He was the first writer to win Sahitya Parishat prize in 1947. iii.He was the president of 74th All India Kannada Sahitya Sammelana in 2007 held at Udupi, Karnataka. He was also the 1st president of the Kannada Book Trust. Sheshagiri also worked with Rashtrothana Parishat social service organisation in Karnataka.

Famous political cartoonist Sabnis passes away in Mumbai, Maharashtra at 69 On December 27, 2019, Legendary Political cartoonist Vikas Sabnis passed away in Mumbai, Maharashtra due to cardiac arrest. He was 69. i.Born on 12 July 1950, Sabnis studied at the Jamsetjee Jeejebhoy (JJ) School of Arts in Mumbai. ii.He considered the famous cartoonist Description Rasipuram Krishnaswami Iyer Laxman & Shiv Sena founder Bal Thackeray as his role models. After working in Thackeray ‘s weekly magazine ‘Marmik’, for 12 years, Sabnis joined the Marathi daily newspaper ‘Loksatta’. iii.He also worked as a staff cartoonist at various newspapers, including the Times of India (TOI) & the Mid-day. iv.In a career spanning 50 years, Sabnis made sharp comments on socio-political developments through his cartoons.
