Staff News As you are probably aware Rita Mann has recently re- tired from her duties as caretaker at Blackwell Commu- nity Centre. Rita has looked after the centre for almost 25 years , illness preventing her from achieving the quarter century which she very much regrets. Rita has worked tirelessly over all those years being on call rain or shine 7 days a week almost 365 days a year. Always willing to go the extra mile to ensure things ran smoothly and mak- ing sure that no one using the centre was disappointed. The Parish Council would like to take this opportunity to publicly thank Rita for her help and support over these years.

Secondly Richard Walker our parish caretaker is leaving ,in his words, “for pas- tures new after an employment offer that he could not refuse”. Richard has been with the Parish Council since June 2007 which surprised me ,the years pass so quickly. Richard has been an great asset to the council ,always cheer- ful ,diligent ,friendly particularly in his dealings with residents requests, concerns and complaints. He has always gone that extra mile working into the evening or responding to emergencies. He will be sorely missed and the Council would like to wish him all the best in his new job. The Council is actively looking for a replacement for Richard and the response to the advert has been very positive so by the time you read this we should have Richard’s replacement in place. The Council would also like to welcome Bev Devani who is taking over the duties as caretaker for Blackwell Community Centre. We would also like to thank individually the other members of staff who are some- times overlooked and possibly taken for granted. So here are our unsung heroes in no particular order, Tracey Swallow caretaker at Newton Community Centre and recently filling in with the same roll at Blackwell. Val Wilson caretaker at Hilcote Welfare and Community Centre. Jayne Simpson our new Clerk and Responsible Financial Officer. Mrs Nicola Heathcote who locks and unlocks Bamford Street Play area for us. Megan Bullock ,councillor Bullocks daughter ,who does the unsociable hours locking and unlocking of Newton Community Centre. Thanks very much to you all. Blackwell Parish

A little bit of history During an investigation of a break in at Blackwell Miners Welfare recently Coun- cillor Gascoyne and I came across a very detailed model of Blackwell Methodist Chapel . The model , as I have found out since, was made by a local gentleman called Gordan Williams who was a electri- cian at A Winning Colliery. This discovery led me to thinking about all the other his- torical buildings in the village of Blackwell and their connection to the colliery and to Blackwell Colliery Company the owners. The first shaft at A Winning was sunk in Gordan William’s Model 1871 and at that time there was no housing or facilities in the area the nearest being what we now call Old Blackwell almost a mile away. So all this had to be created from scratch. Firstly housing local to the pit was built called the colliery rows but as pro- duction increased the need for more housing prompted the building of the “rows “on Primrose Hill on land purchased from 3 lo- cal landowners including the Duke of Dev- onshire who was one of the original share- holders. Building began in 1874 one of the first buildings was the Blackwell Hotel fol Chapel in it’s heyday lowed by Blackwell School ,not the current school ,Blackwell Methodist Chapel , the Reading Room and Institute (Blackwell Welfare) Butchers and Slaughter House (Beaconsfield House) next to the Hotel and the Co-op store ( Morris’s ice cream facto- ry now a private house and all that is left of the original “rows”. Construction of the actual housing was held up for a time be- cause of a dispute during conveyancing with The Duke of Devonshire one of the landowners .This delayed the land pur- Blackwell Hotel Blackwell Parish

Site of Co-op store Primrose Hill chase on till 1877 The colliery hospital was built in 1882 what is now the sadly closed Cottage Inn. Two buildings constructed dur- ing this period for which I have no dates are Pendean House now Amberley House and Blackwell Colliery Company Offices now the garage NET Motors. The carved lintel from the front of the offices was donated by the owner of Net Motors and now forms part of the plinth of the mining memorial on Gloves Lane. Pendean House was the residence of the General Manager of the companyBlack- . The Site of Butchers and Slaughter House Al- photograph opposite shows J T Todd in resi- freton Rd dence. At it’s height Blackwell Colliery Com- pany owned , , Blackwell A wellWin- ning, Blackwell B Winning, Shirland and Sutton pits, employing in total 4.5 thousand men. The land purchased by the company to build Primrose Hill rows cost two thousand five hundred and fifty seven pounds sixteen pounds and three pence. A veritable fortune in 1874. In 1944 the land was transferred to the newly formed New Hucknall and Black- well Colliery Company ,then in 1947 it was assigned to the National Coal Board. After Site of Reading room and Institute and closure of the Blackwell Colliery in 1969 the Colliery Hospital Primrose Hill land was acquired by District Council. Interestingly the house numbering system used started with number one in the colliery continued through Primrose Hill and ended at the end of New Street Hilcote. I will ,at the next council meeting, be re- questing that the model of the chapel and several framed historical photographs that used to hang in the Cottage Inn are housed in Blackwell Community Centre.

This summer we have supported ‘Wings On Tour’ (6 young women leaders from Blackwell and their new male recruit from Shirland – Tom) to deliver summer school activities at Blackwell Community Centre for younger children. Four days of FREE themed fun for the children in the parish. The first day saw a whopping 22 children attend!

So how did this project come about? ‘Being The Change’ was a project stormed up by the young leaders to make positive change in the parish to improve par- ticipation activities for younger children in the summer holi- days.

‘When we were younger there wasn’t much to do in the vil- lage over summer because school and youth club is closed. We know from living here that it’s important to give young chil- dren opportunities to have fun together, especially with no park being available to younger kids at the moment – so we are running activities for kids to come and have fun with us’. Jade T, lives in Blackwell, 15 Yrs, WOT young leader

Here’s a taste of some of the action: Blackwell Parish

‘Working alongside the welcoming WOT team allowed me to deliver fun and creative activities to the younger people within Blackwell and it’s surrounding areas. Joy was felt within myself, the WOT team and the children as I was able to lead exciting challenges – meaning that I could give back to the community’ Tom, 15 years, Lives in Shirland, New WOT Leader

Who’s seen ‘Rock Art’ in Blackwell this summer? Many of you will already be aware of the national craze of ‘Rock Art’ where people paint rocks and hide them in places for people to find. The children at our summer school designed and painted 69 white cobbles and then the ‘Wings on Tour’ leaders secretly placed these all over Blackwell for the children to find over the holidays! Residents have been finding the stones too and are joining in! To see more and get in on the action check out their Facebook page: Blackwell Stones

New outdoor project ahoy! We have been working in partnership with Westhouses Primary School and are delighted to announce that we have been successful in receiving a small grant from the Big Lottery to creatively improve their outdoor space. To kick off the project we have invited in two willow artists to work with the children and community to plant, grow and weave live wil- low structures in the grounds. We’re very excited to get cracking on this project and will keep you posted as progress takes shape!

FREE training and mentoring for local women We’re on the look out for women of all ages from Blackwell and surround- ing villages who want to take part in our new project: Lean On. We are going to be creating a network of women who are interested in or are cur- rently running their own businesses, however big or small, part or full time. You don’t need experience to take part and we have 1-2-1 mentors available too. Expect something a little different: more friendly likemind- ed groups getting creative than the cut-throat apprentice!
