  • Cultural Anthropology Through the Lens of Wikipedia: Historical Leader Networks, Gender Bias, and News-Based Sentiment
Cultural Anthropology through the Lens of Wikipedia: Historical Leader Networks, Gender Bias, and News-based Sentiment Peter A. Gloor, Joao Marcos, Patrick M. de Boer, Hauke Fuehres, Wei Lo, Keiichi Nemoto [email protected] MIT Center for Collective Intelligence Abstract In this paper we study the differences in historical World View between Western and Eastern cultures, represented through the English, the Chinese, Japanese, and German Wikipedia. In particular, we analyze the historical networks of the World’s leaders since the beginning of written history, comparing them in the different Wikipedias and assessing cultural chauvinism. We also identify the most influential female leaders of all times in the English, German, Spanish, and Portuguese Wikipedia. As an additional lens into the soul of a culture we compare top terms, sentiment, emotionality, and complexity of the English, Portuguese, Spanish, and German Wikinews. 1 Introduction Over the last ten years the Web has become a mirror of the real world (Gloor et al. 2009). More recently, the Web has also begun to influence the real world: Societal events such as the Arab spring and the Chilean student unrest have drawn a large part of their impetus from the Internet and online social networks. In the meantime, Wikipedia has become one of the top ten Web sites1, occasionally beating daily newspapers in the actuality of most recent news. Be it the resignation of German national soccer team captain Philipp Lahm, or the downing of Malaysian Airlines flight 17 in the Ukraine by a guided missile, the corresponding Wikipedia page is updated as soon as the actual event happened (Becker 2012.

  • An Actor's Life and Backstage Strife During WWII
Media Release For immediate release June 18, 2021 An actor’s life and backstage strife during WWII INSPIRED by memories of his years working as a dresser for actor-manager Sir Donald Wolfit, Ronald Harwood’s evocative, perceptive and hilarious portrait of backstage life comes to Melville Theatre this July. Directed by Jacob Turner, The Dresser is set in England against the backdrop of World War II as a group of Shakespearean actors tour a seaside town and perform in a shabby provincial theatre. The actor-manager, known as “Sir”, struggles to cast his popular Shakespearean productions while the able-bodied men are away fighting. With his troupe beset with problems, he has become exhausted – and it’s up to his devoted dresser Norman, struggling with his own mortality, and stage manager Madge to hold things together. The Dresser scored playwright Ronald Harwood, also responsible for the screenplays Australia, Being Julia and Quartet, best play nominations at the 1982 Tony and Laurence Olivier Awards. He adapted it into a 1983 film, featuring Albert Finney and Tom Courtenay, and received five Academy Award nominations. Another adaptation, featuring Ian McKellen and Anthony Hopkins, made its debut in 2015. “The Dresser follows a performance and the backstage conversations of Sir, the last of the dying breed of English actor-managers, as he struggles through King Lear with the aid of his dresser,” Jacob said. “The action takes place in the main dressing room, wings, stage and backstage corridors of a provincial English theatre during an air raid. “At its heart, the show is a love letter to theatre and the people who sacrifice so much to make it possible.” Jacob believes The Dresser has a multitude of challenges for it to be successful.

  • On Using Movies to Inform Conscious Aging Courses
On Using Movies to inform Conscious Aging Courses Over the past 4 years I have taught nine, eight-week Conscious Aging courses at Sydney University’s Centre for Continuing Education in Australia. In 2010, I attended the first International Sage-ing Conference in Denver, CO, where Judy Steiert (CSL) gave an inspiring presentation on using movies to inform the Sage-ing materials. I was hooked. Having taught a number of 8-week courses (2 hours/week) without the use of movies, I came home to Australia and designed a course around 8 movies. I extended each class to 3 hours, to allow the time to watch a movie each week and leave some time for discussion. Using movies is a powerful tool for illustrating Sage-ing themes and allows students to really ‘get’, with an emotional catharsis, the importance of the various processes described as necessary in the sage-ing journey. Students find it much easier to discuss and relate to the topics, when they’re portrayed in the lives of characters in a film, than having to find examples in their own experience. It gives them extra time and space to locate the emotions and events and do the required harvesting and healing work in their own lives. Fiction, speaks to deep truths in ourselves. By addressing universal themes, it also allows us to see that we are not alone; it points to the communion of all people and by holding up a mirror to our shared humanity, allows us to see ourselves more clearly. I have found using movies to illustrate and guide the discussion and exploration of the Sage-ing process extremely rewarding and wanted to share some information about the movies I have used with Sage- ing International members.

  • Boardwalk Empire
BOARDWALK EMPIRE "Pilot" Written by Terence Winter FIRST DRAFT April 16, 2008 EXT. ATLANTIC OCEAN - NIGHT With a buoy softly clanging in the distance, a 90-foot fishing schooner, the Tomoka, rocks lazily on the open ocean, waves gently lapping at its hull. ON DECK BILL MCCOY, pensive, 40, checks his pocket watch, then spits tobacco juice as he peers into the darkness. In the distance, WE SEE flickering lights, then HEAR the rumble of motorboats approaching, twenty in all. Their engines idle as the first pulls up and moors alongside. BILL MCCOY (calling down) Sittin' goddarnn duck out here. DANNY MURDOCH, tough, 30s, looks up from the motorboat, where he's accompanied by a YOUNG HOOD, 18. MURDOCH So move it then, c'mon. ON DECK McCoy yankS a canvas tarp off a mountainous stack of netted cargo -- hundreds of crates marked 'Canadian Club Whiskey·. With workmanlike precision, he and .. three CREWMAN hoist the first load of two dozen crates up and over the side, lowering it down on a pulley. As the net reaches the motorboat: MURDOCH (CONT'D) (to the Young Hood) Liquid gold, boyo. They finish setting the load in place, then Murdoch guns the motorboat and heads off. Another boat putters in to take his slot as the next cargo net is lowered. TRACK WITH MURDOCH'S MOTORBOAT as it heads inland through the darkness over the water. Slowly, a KINGDOM OF LIGHTS appears on the horizon, with grand hotels, massive neon signs, carnival rides and giant lighted piers lining its shore. As we draw closer, WE HEAR faint music which grows louder and LOUDER -- circus calliope mixed with raucous Dixieland jazz.

  • Once Upon a Time … in Santa Clarita: Tarantino Movie Opens Thursday
By: Caleb Lunetta, July 25, 2019 Once Upon a Time … In Santa Clarita: Tarantino movie opens Thursday Hollywood director Quentin Tarantino is known for his genre-defying blockbuster films that combine elements of art house, violence and comedy in his Academy Award-winning films. And the San Fernando Valley resident calls Santa Clarita “a special place,” according to local film property owners who have played host to the luminary for his latest film that debuts tonight, “Once Upon a Time … In Hollywood.” The latest installment in the Tarantino filmography follows the story of “a faded television actor and his stunt double (who) strive to achieve fame and success in the film industry during the final years of Hollywood’s Golden Age in 1969 Los Angeles,” according to IMDb.com. The film features Leonardo DiCaprio, Brad Pitt and Margot Robbie. Tarantino and movie fans were given a teaser trailer where the opening shot was that of Melody Ranch’s “Main Street” set. Veluzat said that the production team had been working with the studio for a couple months, from planning to setting up to filming, and for him, it was a special experience. Tarantino has filmed two of his last three movies at Melody Ranch in Newhall, according to studio manager Daniel Veluzat, and he’s praised the SCV in interviews and conversations with local residents. He really does like it here, said Veluzat, in reference to a question about why Tarantino has filmed his movies at Melody Ranch. “He calls it a special place,” he said. And on Thursday night, “Once Upon a Time” opens in theaters across the country, including the Santa Clarita Valley, featuring scenes shot at both Melody Ranch and the Saugus Speedway.
