Newsletter -Edition 15 Newsletter -Edition 15 Inside this issue * This weeks draws * Tickets to Warriors * Orcas home game schedule * Charlie Gubb Twitter sensation * Important dates * 3 new NZRL life members * State of Origin Game 3 From the GM The first of our competition finals start this weekend with the knockout semi-finals of the women’s competition. Defending champions the Linton Cobras take on the Petone Panthers whilst 11 time winners the Te Aroha Eels take on the Titahi Bay Marlins playing in their very first season. All games at Te Whiti Park with the winners advancing to the Grand Final on the 12th July at Wise Park, Wainuiomata. In the premier results last week it was Randwick coming from a 16-8 halftime deficit to clinch an important 23-22 victory over the 5th placed University Hunters to remain in second place. The other 3 matches produced some big score lines as the teams vying for the finals seem to be hitting top gear. The Vikings sealed a 55-12 local derby victory over the Dragons with winger Jordan Makatea crossing for 4 tries including two x 90 metre efforts. Te Aroha defeated Petone in the battle of the bridge 76-4 and the Wainuiomata Lions had a big 56-10 win over big cat rivals the Upper Hutt Tigers. The Hunters and Vikings could still be on track for a final round “knockout” clash but the matches this week are again crucial in the final mix. The Hunters cannot afford a loss this weekend and will be cheering on Wainui at the same time. If Upper Hutt can beat the Hunters and the Vikings get over Wainui it is just about goodbye Hunters. It certainly is going to come down to the last round of games for final placings just as it will for the reserve grades. In reserves the Marlins are the only team assured of a finals placing with any of 6 teams still alive in the race for the last 3 spots. There are still 5 rounds remaining and 2 other fixtures needing to be replayed so it is wide open and every match will count. For the junior grades there is NO football during the middle week of the holidays with competition grades starting finals on the 19th July with the Junior Grand Finals on Sunday 2nd August. The NZRL AGM was held on Monday and a big congratulations goes to Carey Clements who received a Distinguished Service Award for his many years of service to the game. Lise will be in charge of the office for the next 2 weeks as I am on leave in Australia which will include a visit to the Melbourne Storm and then onto Brisbane to watch the NSW BLUES hold up the Origin shield. Looking forward to that one. But some of the dumbest stuff I have ever seen has been published around it, and social media makes that easy. But I did see two pieces that demanded attention – neither from mainstream journalists. One was on Stuff Nation by someone called Jeremy Brown. He talked at length about stuffing up big style, but I will spare Jeremy the embarrassment of repeating it all, suffice to say he was as pissed as a rat –as most of us have been - and made an arse of himself – as most of us have done. Like me, Jeremy put the pills and energy drink decision in the “poor” category. But then he suggested something not many in the media have advocated. It was: Accept there have been consequences, the players have been punished, and move on.

I am conflicted. My grandson is a Roosters fan, and nearly swallowed his ears when Joseph Manu gave him his boots after the win over the Bunnies. There was talk of the grandparents nipping over to go to the final to share the experience with him but that’s not going to happen. On the one hand I hate the Roosters. On the other, I hate the Storm too. This causes no end of annoyance to various people at the Storm, who actually read my rants, but truth be known the hatred is purely jealousy. They are the club we all aspire to be, brilliant, consistent, great to watch and in Cameron Smith and Billy Slat- er they have the two best players of a generation. Until Cooper Cronk buggered off to the Roosters they had three. And now we find Slater’s participation in the grand final has been confirmed. Conflicted I said, hell yes. I’m glad he will get to go out on a high and sign off on a wonderful career in the biggest game of all. On the other hand, he should not have got away with it. No surprise there is now hell on.

By David Kemeys T WAS not the Manu Vatuvei comeback, the battering of the Broncos or even Konrad Hurrell set to debut Ifor the Titans that had my attention last week. Instead it was another controversy, and not one for a change involving the Warriors. The prospect that matches in the NRL have been fixed is appalling. The fact it involves Manly is no surprise- but I say that only because I hate the Sea Eagles more than any other club. Don’t know why, just do. And it turns out, having flogged the Broncos, there is pretty much nothing to moan about. Throw into the mix the fact we have named an unchanged side, and I will confess to being very upset the Vodafone Warriors have not left a festering soar to pick at. I was though also pretty unimpressed when Souths prop Nathan Brown gave one-time Warrior, and one, in my humble view who we let get away, Agnatius Paasi, one in the goollies.
