MICHAEL'S GUINNESS HONORS. JANET'S MOVIE DEBUT :29 Hi, I'm Shadoe Stevens. If you missed American Top 40 last week, you missed Michael Jackson honored by the Guinness Book of World Records with a Lifetime Achievement Award. The latest news on Janet Jackson's first movie "Poetic Justice", Jon Secada started his second year in the Top 40 and tied a feat first done in the 1950's by Elvis. And we had the story of a restaurant owner who didn't know his famous lunch customer, Elton John. What's goin on this week? Join me right here, for the nation's biggest hits and much more, on American Top 40! (LOCAL TAG) 2. THE STARS TALK AND THE HITS ARE NON-STOP TO #1 :30 Hi I'm Shadoe Stevens. AT40's research squad is always searching out stories from music's hottest stars about themselves and their songs. Last week, Snow explained his big first hit, "Informer", Ugly Kid Joe told us about the reaction they've been getting for re-doing the Harry Chapin '?O's hit, "Cats In The Cradle", and the hot new girl group Jade talked about their top five song, "Don't Walk Away". Hey, every week we count down radio's top songs from the Billboard chart on American Top 40, where the stars talk and music's non-stop to #1 ! Join me won't ya, right here and only here on ..... (LOCAL TAG) 3. WATCH OUT FOR THOSE JACKSONS :30 Hi, I'm Shadoe Stevens. Last week on AT40, Spin Doctors spent their seventh week at #1 with "Two Princes". But watch for those Jackson's! Janet Jackson's at #4 and moving up fast with her new song, "That's The Way Love Goes", and what about big brother Michael at #6 with a song that's already gone #1 dance, "Who is It?" Then there's Duran Duran at #7 with the second top ten of their comeback, "Come Undone". They'd like it to follow "Ordinary World" to #1. Find out what happens this week, join me as we count 'em down from the official Billboard chart, right here, on American Top 40! (LOCAL TAG) **** FOR YOUR CONVENIENCE, WE HAVE PLACED A 25 HZ TONE AT-10 DB AT THE END OF OUR NETWORK COMMERCIAL BREAKS TO ACCOMMODATE AUTOMATED AND SEMI-AUTOMATED STATIONS**** e ABC Watermark GABC RADIO NETWORKS 3575 Cahuenga Blvd W, Suite 555, Los Angeles, CA 90068 VOICE: 213.882.8330 FAX: 213.850.1050 AT40 ACTUALITIES w. SHOW 22 DISC 4 TRACKS 9.10, & 11 1. Our next song is a remake of a #1 song from 1974. And since UGLY KID JOE have released their version of Harry Chapin's "CAT'S IN THE CRADLE", they've gotten some interesting reactions: UGLY KID JOE ACTUALITY: (:26) "People will come up and go oh yeah, I really like that song, and like I have problems with my dad or they'll actually give you some crazy story... I cried the first time I heard it on the radio. Someone just told me yesterday, they cried the first time they saw the video. It's protrayed so well, like a little movie, that you can get the full vibe of the song. I mean we had no idea it was gonna like turn out to be a hit or whatever 'cause we were just putting it on the album and low and behold! 2. The song, "INFORMER" by Snow is a little hard to understand. Well now you can quit racking your brains trying to figure out "a leaky boom boom now" and the rest of the song -- we have SNOW to explain: SNOW ACTUALITY: (:24) "The story's about an informer who ratted me, that means put it on me so he ratted on me and put me in jail for a year for two murders that I didn't do. So then, that's when I wrote the song, when I was in jail, about the informer, who ratted on me, ha! Informer, that's who I'm gonna blame, detectives said, daddy stole my step, somebody down the lane, I think you're boom boom now, that means I let go. Hit down the informer." 3. Jade's second hit is "DON'T WALK AWAY" and they told us a little about the song: JADE ACTUALITY: (:45) "You know, when you take a chance on a guy, you find yourself liking a guy, he likes you, and you want to get intimate, but you don't because you're not sure, if he's gonna be there after you get with the program. And so, it's basically about that, it's a question song, if we do this, are you gonna be around, will you stick around for a while? Are you gonna walk away, so it's like don't walk away, and you're telling the guy, I like you but, we have to take this one day at a time, so I think it's a good message for people, 'cause if I tell you that no, we're not gonna be intimate, are you gonna walk away? Right. And then if we are intimate, are you gonna walak away? Ha ha ha! Well, don't walk away! It's like that, yeah!" • In Defense of Rap Music: Not Just Beats, Rhymes, Sex, and Violence
In Defense of Rap Music: Not Just Beats, Rhymes, Sex, and Violence THESIS Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Master of Arts Degree in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University By Crystal Joesell Radford, BA Graduate Program in Education The Ohio State University 2011 Thesis Committee: Professor Beverly Gordon, Advisor Professor Adrienne Dixson Copyrighted by Crystal Joesell Radford 2011 Abstract This study critically analyzes rap through an interdisciplinary framework. The study explains rap‟s socio-cultural history and it examines the multi-generational, classed, racialized, and gendered identities in rap. Rap music grew out of hip-hop culture, which has – in part – earned it a garnering of criticism of being too “violent,” “sexist,” and “noisy.” This criticism became especially pronounced with the emergence of the rap subgenre dubbed “gangsta rap” in the 1990s, which is particularly known for its sexist and violent content. Rap music, which captures the spirit of hip-hop culture, evolved in American inner cities in the early 1970s in the South Bronx at the wake of the Civil Rights, Black Nationalist, and Women‟s Liberation movements during a new technological revolution. During the 1970s and 80s, a series of sociopolitical conscious raps were launched, as young people of color found a cathartic means of expression by which to describe the conditions of the inner-city – a space largely constructed by those in power. Rap thrived under poverty, police repression, social policy, class, and gender relations (Baker, 1993; Boyd, 1997; Keyes, 2000, 2002; Perkins, 1996; Potter, 1995; Rose, 1994, 2008; Watkins, 1998).

  • “Until That Song Is Born”: an Ethnographic Investigation of Teaching and Learning Among Collaborative Songwriters in Nashville
“UNTIL THAT SONG IS BORN”: AN ETHNOGRAPHIC INVESTIGATION OF TEACHING AND LEARNING AMONG COLLABORATIVE SONGWRITERS IN NASHVILLE By Stuart Chapman Hill A DISSERTATION Submitted to Michigan State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Music Education—Doctor of Philosophy 2016 ABSTRACT “UNTIL THAT SONG IS BORN”: AN ETHNOGRAPHIC INVESTIGATION OF TEACHING AND LEARNING AMONG COLLABORATIVE SONGWRITERS IN NASHVILLE By Stuart Chapman Hill With the intent of informing the practice of music educators who teach songwriting in K– 12 and college/university classrooms, the purpose of this research is to examine how professional songwriters in Nashville, Tennessee—one of songwriting’s professional “hubs”—teach and learn from one another in the process of engaging in collaborative songwriting. This study viewed songwriting as a form of “situated learning” (Lave & Wenger, 1991) and “situated practice” (Folkestad, 2012) whose investigation requires consideration of the professional culture that surrounds creative activity in a specific context (i.e., Nashville). The following research questions guided this study: (1) How do collaborative songwriters describe the process of being inducted to, and learning within, the practice of professional songwriting in Nashville, (2) What teaching and learning behaviors can be identified in the collaborative songwriting processes of Nashville songwriters, and (3) Who are the important actors in the process of learning to be a collaborative songwriter in Nashville, and what roles do they play (e.g., gatekeeper, mentor, role model)? This study combined elements of case study and ethnography. Data sources included observation of co-writing sessions, interviews with songwriters, and participation in and observation of open mic and writers’ nights.

You can sign up online at flccs.net to reserve your spot. If you’ve previously signed up and want to move to another time slot, please email Cheryl at [email protected]. HELP WANTED! We are all thrilled to have three services in which to worship together in the Sanctuary! Even with COVID Restrictions, we are welcoming more than 300 people into church each Sunday. This means we need your help! We have a critical need for Greeters, Ushers and Communion Preparation. No experience necessary! We are happy to teach you! You simply need to bring a smile to welcome people to worship! If you haven't already, please complete the How Would YOU Like to Serve? form. If you've already filled it out but would like to add something, please fill it out again! https://bit.ly/2OyeHxM 1 From the Pastor It’s been said that we’ve all been in the same storm this past year with the pandemic, but we haven’t all been in the same boat. One pastor suggested that some of us have gone through this storm in a yacht while others have gone through it in a rowboat or clinging to driftwood.

Based on an examination of the correspondence of whig and radical polit- icians, and of the files of the morning Chronicle, it illustrates the impact which Perry made on the world of politics and journalism. The main questions discussed are how Perry responded, as a Foxite journalist, to the chief political issues of the day; the extent to which the whigs attempted to influence his editorial policy and the degree to which he reconciled his independence with obedience to their wishes4 the difficulties he encountered as the spokesman of an often divided party; his considerable involvement, which was remarkable for a journalist, in party activity and in the social life of whig politicians; and his success as a newspaper proprietor concerned not only with political propaganda, but with conducting a paper which was distinguished for the quality of its miscellaneous features and for its profitability as a business enterprise.

LateRooms.com - Alice in Chains ready to rock Turin Submitted by: LateRooms Ltd Tuesday, 4 May 2010 Seattle grunge legends Alice in Chains are set to play in Turin this summer, a gig that could provide the perfect opportunity for guests at Turin hotels (http://www.laterooms.com/en/k13666314_turin-hotels.aspx) to dust off their ripped jeans and enjoy an evening of quality alternative music. The band is set to play Colonia Sonora on Wednesday June 9th, with founding member Jerry Cantrell still rocking away alongside William DuVall, who joined the band in 2005 after the death of original vocalist Layne Staley. Fans in the crowd may be pleased to hear that if they are enthusiastic enough they may be treated to an extended set, with the band revealing on their blog that this was the case at a recent gig in St Augustine, Florida. "On a night like tonight, when the crowd is great and the band is a little extra pumped up, they add a song to the encore," they remarked. Attendees can expect to hear songs from the group's back a catalogue of hits, which stretches over more than 25 years and includes hit albums such as their eponymous Alice in Chains record and Jar of Flies. This week, the band confirmed on their official website that they are set to headline Blackdiamondskye in Autumn, with Mastodon and the Deftones providing support. Entrance to the show costs €34.50 (£29.80), with tickets available online. To make the most of the Alice in Chains concert – you should consider booking your hotel Torino (http://www.laterooms.com/it/k13666314_hotel-torino.aspx) to avoid disappointment.
