Label: Schnitzel Records http://www.schnitzel.co.uk Distributor: Shellshock http://www.shellshock.co.uk From a pedigree that includes Pure Grain & The Family Cat Paul Fredericks and Chistopher Cordoba are Jack Adaptor Under the auspices of Schnitzel Records Mr Frederick & Mr Cordoba are about to venture forth with the release of Jack Adaptor’s first single “No Logos” on September 27th. Neither Paul Frederick (Fred) nor Christopher Cordoba (Chris) are able to recall with any degree of accuracy as to how it was they came to meet up musically. Paul Frederick needed to find a guitarist for his band The Family Cat which at the time had just lost three band members. Paul says “the old line up of The Family Cat had three guitar players, as soon as I heard Christopher play; I knew I could put my guitar down and concentrate on singing: Christopher could achieve on his own the sound that I had been looking for”. The fact is that Chris joined The Family Cat at the end of its days. Despite the bands three albums and ten singles, two of which, reached forty two and forty six respectively in the UK charts the band had run its course. To this day they are fondly remembered by all who bought their music or went to see them

Page 1 play. Paul and Christopher agreed that it was time to move on and do something different under a new situation. Frederick felt an urgent need for a change of musical direction. “I needed to be more melodic, more song-based, and less angry. Christopher needed to express himself through his song writing and move towards arrangement and production.” A mutual love of the music of artists like Todd Rundgren, The Byrds, Miles Davis, Motown, Leroy Hutson, Townes Van Zandt, Prince and Steely Dan allowed them to set about writing freely music that reflected the diversity displayed in their own personal taste. They called themselves Pure Grain, an experimental pop & country rock band marked by the release of “Here Come the Millionaires” on their own Supple Pipe label. This is now a rarity due to a pulping error at the distribution company. “Here Come The Millionaires” would help to establish once again that Cordoba & Frederick were players of some substance a fact that was borne out by the support they received from many discerning DJ’s amongst them Radio 1’s Steve Lamacq and BBC London’s Robert Elms. Pure Grain contributed “The Sweetest Song” to the Fierce Panda double seven inch “Cry Me A Liver” (Ning 040). The Sweetest Song also found its way on to the various artist compilation LP from Fierce Panda Records “ Where The Wild Ning's Are” (Nong 11CD)” which included such bands as the Low Fidelity All Stars, Idlewild and Embrace. The promotion CDR of this album is now a much sought after rarity. On the road Pure Grain were performing as an acoustic duo while at the same time presenting a fluctuating line up of drums, bass, accordion, cello, lap steel and piano. Their gigs during this period were as diverse as a surfer’s festival on a windy cliff top near Land’s End and a performance at the Fast Lane in Asbury Park, NJ. Around this time Pure Grain recorded an LP “Nobody Loses All the Time”, a 12-track exploration of their ever-expanding country-soul-pop world. This was Christopher’s first full production work, although he had collaborated on earlier Pure Grain recordings with Phil Vinall (Gene, Placebo, Das Pop) and Donald Ross Skinner (Julian Cope). Their adopted home for some time was to be Chris Wyles’s Bluestone Studios in London’s Notting Hill Gate. It was Chris Wyles who originally helped them out with studio time to finish “Nobody Loses All The Time” when their old studio increased the daily rate by 400% overnight. When the record was well received and yet remained unsigned, Cordoba and Frederick embarked on their most ambitious project yet: a three year writing and recording marathon which would come to encompass nearly 40 songs and which would bear fruit in the 2 LPs now licensed to Schnitzel Records. Without a regular band to call on, Christopher Cordoba played many of the instruments on the recordings himself: As well as guitar, he played bass, drums, piano, keyboards, percussion, and a lot of the backing vocals; he produced the sessions too. Talented engineer Mat Hempell was unfazed by Cordoba’s maverick

Page 2 production techniques and Frederick’s painstaking, yet flamboyant, lead vocal methods. It took a long time but it was worth it. The songs were great, the production first class. In lieu of regular band members, they had been able to use some star players: Tim Bradshaw (David Gray/Fat Lady Sings) on accordion and lap steel; Audey Riley (Coldplay, Smashing Pumpkins, Merce Cunningham, Dave Matthews etc) on cello. Although the band Jack Adaptor at the studio production stage is primarily Paul Frederick and Christopher Cordoba, they have added several musicians to their live line up. In addition to regular drummer Gareth Batson, Richard Le Mond has joined as bass player and Dee Dee Royce is now the female backing voice of Jack Adaptor. Live, they re-interpret the songs from the LP with wit and style. Jack Adaptor sing the Frederick & Cordoba songbook! In May 2004 Jack Adaptor toured Germany, Austria and Switzerland with label mates The Waxwings (from Detroit, USA, good friends with the White Stripes): The whole tour will be repeated and expanded to include the UK during the autumn of 2004.
