On Tuesday, Australia's fortress -- The Gabba -- was finally breached. It took 32 years and two months, but the unthinkable was achieved as an injury-ravaged young 12 Indian team beat Australia by three wickets against all odds in the final Test to take the series 2-1. "Congrats to the Indian cricket team @BCCI. That's one of the best series wins I can ever remember on Aust soil & to do it after being bowled out for 36, plus a depleted squad-shows tremendous character, resilience, courage & belief. YUGMARG, CHANDIGARH, WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 20, 2021 Just fantastic @RaviShastriOfc @ajinkyarahane88," tweeted Warne. SHORT TALKS Wednesday We will remember this series forever: Ashwin tags Paine after historic win BRISBANE: With India registering a famous 2-1 series win over Australia at The Gabba on Tuesday, India spinner Ravichandran Ashwin said that he was glad to have played such high-quality cricket during these testing times. January 20, 2021 Tagging Australia skipper Tim Paine in his tweet, Ashwin said: "Good evening from Gabba!! I am sorry I couldn't play here but thanks for hosting us and playing some hard cricket during these tough times. We will remember this series forev- er! @tdpaine36 @CricketAus." Ashwin missed out at The Gabba as he complained of back spasms on the last day of the third Test. The bowling all-rounder had displayed amazing grit during the third Test at Sydney to help India walk away with a draw. Paine's efforts to throw Ravichan- dran Ashwin off-guard failed terribly on the final day of the third Test at the Sydney Cricket Ground as the off-spinner had the perfect come- back in store. Unable to take wickets, Australia skipper Paine was trying his best to distract Ashwin and he was caught on stump mic as saying: "Can't wait for you to reach Gabba, Ash." To this, Ashwin immediately re- sponded: "Can't wait for you to Injury ravaged India seal series 2-1 come to India as well, that would be your last series." The original texts include religious epics, Shakespeare’s plays, Bengali novels which were written pre- independence, and Hollywood films. This venture uses adaptation theory as well as postmodernist and postcolonial theories to examine how women and men are represented in the adaptations as well as how contemporary audience expectations help to create the identity of the characters in the films.

The romance between Bollywood and Digital Media A study on the implementation of digital promotional activities in Bollywood Student Name: Dinesh Koendjbiharie Student Number: 357429 Supervisor: Payal Arora PhD MA Media Studies – Media and Business Erasmus School of History, Culture and Communication Erasmus University Rotterdam MA Thesis July 2015 0 Version 2.0. - July 2015 The romance between Bollywood and Digital Media A study on the implementation of digital promotional activities in Bollywood ABSTRACT The Indian cinema, often referred to as Bollywood, is when it comes to production scale the largest movie industry in the world. The media and creative industries have been facing a new challenge in the past decade such as, but not limited to, the implementation of new digital media technologies in their digital promotional strategies. This research looks into the promotional activities in contemporary Bollywood that are visible to the consumer. The research question: “How does Bollywood use social media for promotional activities to reach the domestic and global market and possibly strengthen their current promotional strategies?” will be answered through two in-depth case studies on Bollywood blockbuster movie ‘Happy New Year’ and a movie that did exceptionally well ‘Queen’. This research firstly touches upon the changes and the development the industry went through, followed by creating an understanding of the industry’s contemporary position. The first step of the analysis is based on creating an in-depth understanding of the cases and the corresponding data from among others Facebook and Twitter. The following step of the analysis is solely focussed on the adjoining film music industry, in which the attention is paid to the promotion of the film music and also the promotion through the official social media channels of the cases.

Approval Name: Maliha Siddiqi Degree: Master of Arts Title: “The valley of desire”: A study of Kashmir as portrayed through popular Indian cinema Zoë Druick Senior Supervisor Professor Katherine Reilly Program director Associate Professor Date Defended/Approved: 31st August 2020 ii Abstract Indian-administered Kashmir has been a conflicted territory since 1947. This paper studies the representation of Kashmir and its civilian population in popular Hindi films. As Bollywood has an immensely dedicated audience, both in India as well as globally, the sensitive issues surrounding Kashmir make for extremely sought-after and therefore potentially influential content in films. I argue that these films reflect a sharp bias and a myopic approach towards showcasing the area and its civilian population. This paper employs the use of film analysis and critical discourse analysis to examine seven films — Mission Kashmir (2000), Yahaan (2005),Fanaa (2006), I am (2010), Lamhaa (2010), Haider (2014) and Hamid (2018) — to support the argument. The results show that all the films except Haider and Hamid misrepresent or underrepresent the realities of Kashmir.

  • The Kashmiri As Muslim in Bollywood's 'New Kashmir Films'
Contemporary South Asia Vol. 18, No. 4, December 2010, 373–385 The Kashmiri as Muslim in Bollywood’s ‘New Kashmir films’ Ananya Jahanara Kabir* School of English, University of Leeds, Leeds, UK This article examines the depiction of the Kashmiri protagonist in three popular Indian films, Roja (1992), Mission Kashmir (2000), and . Yahaan (2005), in order to argue for a new emphasis, cumulatively evident through these films, on the Kashmiri as Muslim in the history of Bollywood’s long engagement with the Valley of Kashmir. In analysing closely the visual, narrative, cinematic and affective aspects of this development, and in contextualising it against global and local politics of Islam, the article aims to contribute to a better understanding of how Kashmir, and Islam, while topics with separate discursive genealogies within Bollywood, have converged decisively at a certain historical juncture so as to open up new possibilities for the ideological co-optation of the Kashmir conflict, and the place of Muslims in India, by the popular cinematic apparatus. Keywords: Kashmir; Islam; Bollywood Introduction The prominent release in early 2010 of My Name is Khan, the Shahrukh Khan film that potently brings together autism, 9/11 and Indian Muslim identity, has prompted several commentators on Indian cinema to return to an old question: the portrayal of the Indian Muslim as a minority subject within Bollywood (Kesavan 2007). Earlier an operation to be delicately executed in step with the Nehruvian consensus on secularism – an emblematic film here being Amar Akbar Anthony – the relationship between cinema and Indian Muslim identity (Islam 2007; Kazmi 1994) took on an even more complicated turn after 9/11 and 26/11 (the attack on the Indian Parliament on 26 November, 2008).

(35-38) - Kamala Das in An Introduction In Feminist Philosophies A-Z Nancy Arden McHugh says, “Gender is the result of social institutions and is a learned behavior while sex is a biological category. Thus gender is a social construction and a product of nurturing while sex is a product of nature.” (49). According to the Oxford Dictionary, gender is “the state of being male or female with reference to social or cultural differences.” The social constructs have played a crucial role in the creation of the typical image of women in the Indian society. Society sets certain behaviors and norms for a child which determine her/his gender. Along with gender, class also divides the society in different hierarchies. Pascal Gisbert, in his famous book Fundamentals of Sociology defines class as “a category or group of persons having a definite status in society which permanently determines their relation to other groups” (367).

  • Kayem Jayanta
im 027 Stage actor dies after 2-year battle with cancer Kayem Jayanta Das, a veteran actor of the Delhi stage whom filmgoers would best remember as an outwardly stentorian Bengali father in Shoojit Sircar’s Vicky Donor, died in the capital on 17.10.2014. He was 67 and had been battling pancreatic cancer for the past two years. Das was last seen in the role of an Army general 2013’s John Abraham-Nargis Fakhri starrer Madras Cafe, another film directed by Sircar. Das appeared in two other Sircar films — as a school principal in Udaan (2010) and also as an Army commander in Yahaan (2005). “He was one of the finest actors I have worked with, an adorable man and an honest performer,” said Sircar. “I cast him in all my films.” Das acted in a few other films and several TV serials, but it was in theatre that he shone as an actor. “He was a legend of the Delhi stage, particularly Bengali theatre,” said Sircar. He began acting as a teenager with a group called Shanichakra in the early1960s, joined The Players group in Kirori Mal College before forming Nabodoy Goshti, a Bengali theatre group that remained active for two decades till the late 1980s, starring in plays such as Sher Afghan. Das also acted with other groups and directors, such as Amal Allana and Habib Tanvir, with whom he worked in Moteram Ka Satyagraha. He is also remembered for his performances in the jatra genre, a quasi-traditional theatre form with exaggerated, stylized acting.
