Address: RUNNERS WORLD, 598 High Street, East Kew, Victoria (Melways 45 G4) Telephone: 03 9817 3503 Hours : Monday to Friday: 9:30am to 5:30pm Saturday: 9:00am to 3:00pm Website: http://www.runnersworld.com.au/ Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/pages/Runners-World/235649459888840 TIM'S WALKER OF THE WEEK Last week's winner was 14 year old Clara Smith whose time of 24:20.16 was a 26 sec PB and is fantastic for one so young. She was amongst my Top Ten walkers for 2012 and looks set to continue the good work in 2013. Over 400 votes were cast in what was our biggest ever contest. That means 400+ people logging onto the VRWC website and voting and hopefully having a look at what walking is all about whilst doing it. This week has seen more fantastic performances but one stands out so clearly that I don't even have to put it to a vote. It is once again Clara Smith of Queensland. Yes, that's two weeks in a row. Competing in the Glynis Nunn Shield last Saturday evening at the Queensland Sports Centre in Brisbane, she scorched around the track in a wonderful 5000m time of 23:08.26. That's over a minute faster than the time which won her Walker of the Week last week. It is certainly an Australian leading time and perhaps one of the best ever world wide for one so young - Clara is only 14 years old! She is now our top U20 ranked woman and she has another 5 years to go! Clara Smith (http://www.couriermail.com.au) WHAT'S COMING UP I normally have this section at the end of the newsletter but this week it is right up front so that no one can miss it. Queenslander Katya Martin walked excellently to win the U18 event with a big PB time of 24:56.09. Her 8 th place time of 1:30:58 is her 6th qualifier and she leads the chase for the remaining two women's spots behind Rachel Tallent who was selected in February. As the 20km qualifying period finished on Sunday, the Australian selectors are meeting this week to select the remaining two women's 20km spots and the remaining two men's 20km spots. Regan is one of 5 women in the running, with qualifying performances shown below. FRONT COVER: Kirdyapkin races through the Brandenburg Gate on his way to becoming 50k World Champion. PHOTO: by Jeff Salvage ALSO: Scott Davis makes a huge breakthrough in Switzerland. Editorial People all over the world love race walking. It started here, and now reaches into every continent. I often find myself in contact with people in far-off exotic locations. I’ve just recently returned from racing in Switzerland and France. Faces become familiar from race to race abroad, and people eventually introduce themselves and over time become friends. Many readers have told me how they have made long- term friends at overseas events. Several people at the Swiss event turned up six days later at the French event 500 miles away, and supported each other just because they had that one common link. Race Walking is treated slightly differently within each country, but walkers have a huge respect for each other whether they are Olympians or just fitness walkers. UK walkers race abroad in many countries each year, and welcome overseas walkers to events here. This magazine is now sent to readers in twenty different countries, and growing... People queuing behind me at the post office each month really hate me, as I have so many international magazines to send, one-by-one! On my holiday I found the source of the River Danube and ceremoniously set one of my old trainers floating down it. An hour later, the other one was set floating down the River Rhine. (Please don’t litter!) You can’t just throw away something that has brought you so much enjoyment! Am I crazy? Aren’t all race walkers..

This winter season, he has gone even faster, winning the 2021 South Australian 20km title a couple of weeks ago in 1:32:31. You have to go back to 2013 to see a faster 20km time (PB of 1:31:14) by Kim. This winter, he has knocked out times of 12:57 (3km), 23:54 (5km), 44:30 (10km M35 record) and 2:27:36 (30km). Racing in Adelaide on Saturday, he upped the ante even more, recording a new South Australian Masters M35 5km record of 21:40. Kim, 36 years of age, is now approaching the career best form he exhibited in 2013. That’s great to see! And Kim is not just active as a walker; he also coaches and helps as an administrator with the SA Race Walking Club. Well done Kim, keep up the inspiring work. Kim in running mode (Park Run, Adelaide, 18th July) and walking mode (LBG 30km June 13th) WHAT’S COMING UP • Athletics Australia confirmed last Wednesday that the Australian Winter Walks Championships and the Australian Road Running Championships have been postponed.

VIC MILLER REMINISCENCES ON THE MEXICAN REVOLUTIONARIES Readers of this newsletter will know Vic Miller's name in the context of racewalking stamps. Vic is one of the experts on whom I call when I am reviewing walking related philatelic matters. But Vic is a sports enthusiast in his own right, and has put together his own reminiscences on the Mexican racewalking revolution. For my friend Down Under, Tim Erickson, who once took a walk and never stopped... Marche de Mexico In 1958 an Englishman named John Velzian was hired as a physical education officer for Kenya, overseeing athletics in the emerging African country's school system. With an emphasis on track, Velzian began to tap a reservoir of natural runners. Before the end of the British Empire and Commonwealth Games in August of 1966, Kenya, the young independent country, had come of age in track. Given the fanaticism for futbol and a seemingly inexhaustive supply of inexhaustive participants, it was only a matter of time that a similar breakthrough in track would occur in the land of the Aztlan. Just a little over two months prior to the opening of the aforementioned '66 British Empire and Commonweath Games, seven foreigners had been inserted into Mexico with a vision of giving the host nation of the next Summer Olympics some athletes to cheer about. One of these coaches, Jerzy Hausleber, assembled a half dozen hopefuls. Of Hausleber's six students, his proverbial prize pupil was soon identified. Jose Pedraza Zuniga, a soldier in the enlisted ranks of the Mexican army who was pushing thirty years old, was as unlikely a person to pin a medal hope on as was his discipline: race walking! Jose Pedraza, though, quickly established himself as someone worthy of Jerzy Hausleber's focus.
