Maids of Mount Cisco - TRAD Miss Thornton’s Reel is a tune we have been playing as long as we can remember. It is listed in “O’Neill’s 1001 Jigs, Reels, Hornpipes, Airs and Marches” as tune number 534 and we don’t deviate too much from the original melody here. Andy McGann’s No 2 is a tune picked up from various sessions in the late eighties and early nineties. The Maids of Mount Cisco is another popular session tune and one that we’ve played for many years. It can be found in notation form in Ceol Rince na hEireann, volume 1 as tune 118. LUCKPENNY SLEEVE NOTES Track 2 1. Horse with a Heart - composed by FRANKIE KENNEDY 2. Paddy on the Rocks - composed by NOEL SWEENEY 3. Munster Bacon - TRAD The Horse with a Heart is a tune that we learned from an early Altan recording. We only recently learned that this was actually written by Frankie Kennedy. The second tune was written by the fabulous Noel Sweeney formerly of Co Leitrim and now living in Longford. Noel has been a constant source of inspiration and encouragement since we moved to Longford and it was great to be able to include this tune on the album. Munster Bacon is another old favourite from “O’Neill’s 1001 Jigs, Reels, Hornpipes, Airs and Marches”. It can be found as tune 340 and hopefully we’re fairly close to the setting in O’Neill’s! The Development of an Archive of Explicit Stylistic
CONCLUSIONS I trust I am offering to my countrymen an acceptable present: the gift has novelty, at least, to recommend it. Though Ireland has been long famed for its poetry and music, these subjects have never yet been treated of historically. I do not pretend to have done completely, what has lain so long undone: no doubt, many sources of information still remain unopened, and many documents unconsulted. However, I have marked out a path, which may facilitate the pursuit of those who shall hereafter follow me.1 It may be ironic to conclude this latest study of Irish traditional music with the words that Joseph Cooper Walker used to open what is regarded as the first book on the subject, yet the sentiment is shared. In many ways, the best of what both studies have achieved is to draw attention to the vastness of that which still remains unknown. Similarly to Walker, the focus of this study is not on comprehensiveness but on the investigation of a pathway that may be useful beyond the scope of this thesis. The fundamental objective of this research was to develop and refine a process through which an archive of explicit stylistic data could be constructed and then to determine what practical outcomes would emerge from working with explicit stylistic data in this way. One of the more interesting results of the project was that from conversations with other musicians and academics I found that the basic idea of codifying and using stylistic knowledge was not new. Kristiina Ilmonen, the former director of the Folk Music Department at the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki, told me that she uses the term ‘treasure box’, to describe the mental space where her musical knowledge is stored and from which she can select elements of it for use in performance. -

Traditional Irish band Altan to perform in pre-St. Patrick's Day concert March 10 at the Mandeville Auditorium in UCSD February 23, 1996 Media Contact: Ruth Baily at University Events, 534-0497, or Jan Jennings, 534-8687 TRADITIONAL IRISH BAND ALTAN TO PERFORM IN PRE-ST. PATRICK'S DAY CONCERT MARCH 10 AT UCSD Allan, widely considered to be the hottest traditional Irish band to emerge from Ireland in two decades, will perform in a pre-St. Patrick's Day concert at 8 p.m. March 10 in Mandeville Auditorium at the University of California, San Diego. The award-winning group has been featured at major festivals and concert tours throughout Europe, Canada, and the United States. Writes The New Yorker in a St. Patrick's Day, 1994, review: "It's difficult to imagine traditional Celtic music sounding any more vital than when it's being performed by this electrifying young super group from Dublin." The quintet consists of Mairead Ni Mhaonaigh, playing the fiddle and singing songs in her native Gaelic and in English; Ciaran Tourish, fiddle; Ciaran Curran, bouzouki; Daithi Sproule, guitar, and Dermot Byrne, accordion. "The allure of Allan for many is Mhaonaigh's enchantingly pure Gaelic singing," writes The Boston Globe. "Irish is her first language, and on her tongue it is warm, fluid, and utterly romantic." Altan's repertoire comes from County Donegal in the Northwest corner of Ireland, an area with a long history of exchanging labor -- and music -- with Scotland. The result is a distinctive style combining the melodic quality of Irish tunes with the power and drive of Scottish music. -

Final Thesis-Hendey.Docx
FORWARD: INVESTIGATING THE TELOS AND TECHNE OF A MUSICALLY VOCATED LIFE by ADAM HENDEY A THESIS Presented to the School of Music and Dance and the Robert D. Clark Honors College in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Bachelor of Arts June 2017 An Abstract of the Thesis of Adam Hendey for the degree of Bachelor of Arts in the School of Music and Dance to be taken June 2017 Title: FORWARD: Recording and Producing a Full-Length Album Approved: _______________________________________ Juan Eduardo Wolf, Ph.D. Forward is a collection of tunes in the Celtic idiom, comprised mostly of my own original compositions, arranged alongside a number of traditional pieces from the repertoire of folk music from Scotland and Ireland. Many of the original compositions included on the album came from the set of tunes I composed at the end of my Summer 2015 study abroad program; others were written during the recording process. I recorded and produced my debut solo album, Forward, as the primary component of my Clark Honors College Thesis project. I will bring the music of this album to life for friends, fellow students, interested peers, and professors in a Senior Recital in the Spring 2017 term. The final element of my thesis will be, of course, an accompanying paper. The primary objective of my thesis paper component will be to dive into the process of how I produced Forward and to examine why I made specific compositional and sonic/aesthetic decisions throughout the work. Beyond this, the paper will act as a kind of “extended program” to the album itself, with detailed writings on the stories behind each composition.
