I am both honoured and daunted to have been appointed. "I have a strong sense of calling to this role and to serve the people of Chester Diocese but that doesn’t stop me feeling unworthy and slightly terrified. “I am assured that I will receive a warm welcome and I really look forward to getting to know my new colleagues and community. "Please pray for me as I prepare, just as I will pray for you.” Bishop-designate Sam said: “It is humbling and so very exciting to have been nominated as the next Bishop of Stockport. “Any act of discernment is as demanding as it is energising, but I have had a strong sense of God’s leading throughout the appointment process and I am eager to begin getting to know people across the diocese and to learning about the different communities we serve. "And what a gift to be able to join a new episcopal team at such a key time in the life of the diocese. "I am so excited about working together with Bishop Mark and Julie as we strive to enable the discipleship and ministry of the whole people of God to flourish and as we support churches, schools and chaplaincies across the diocese in proclaiming the Good News of Jesus Christ. “I know I have much to learn. Nothing spectacular happens in the liturgy, the colour green becomes a fixed for nearly five months and the Minister welcomes everyone to worship to yet another week of the long Trinity season. Green is such an ordinary colour. Our gardens and churchyards are filled to overflowing with green all over the place.

Calendar of Intercessions Christmas – Passiontide 2020 to the Prayer Calendar for the Diocese of Rochester. The Anglican Communion cycle of prayer is no Welcome longer listed here, but can be found at http://www.anglicancommunion.org/resources/cycle-of-prayer.aspx and at @ACOffice. Similarly prayers from the World Council of Churches (WCC) can be found at @WCCprayers. Both cycles have a feed in the PrayerMate app (see below). In its current form, the calendar has two cycles: Parish and Community. The Community cycle includes any church schools attached to the parishes we pray for, day by day, but also includes other aspects of parish and diocesan life. When parishes have a link set up with another parish, we also include them in our prayers. Sunday entries cover some of the bigger pictures in our Diocese (sometimes geographical, sometimes issues or activities). These are usually simply one or two lines of text, but occasionally have fuller entries. The calendar also includes the calendar of saints and the liturgical colours – to keep the connection between our intercessions and the wider rhythms of our prayer. We also remember local saints commended to us by Bishop James, who might not necessarily be recognised by the Church of England nationally. Finally, there is space in the daily entries for you to note any prayer requests that have been made to you or your parish, or any special interests you want to remember in your prayers. So whilst we acknowledge the sadness that John’s death brings to us; we are grateful and thankful that Andrea has bravely stepped into the breach. John Barrett was churchwarden for some three or four years and was also PCC Treasurer for at least 12 years - I don’t think he quite remembered when he started.

The Cathedral and Metropolitical Church of St Peter in York The Consecration of The Venerable Julie Conalty Archdeacon of Tonbridge to be Bishop of Birkenhead and The Revd Canon Samuel Corley Rector of Leeds to be Bishop of Stockport by The Most Revd and Rt Hon Stephen Cottrell Lord Archbishop of York, Primate of England and Metropolitan assisted by the Bishop of Durham and the Bishop of Newcastle Monday 19 July 2021 at 11.00 am Gregory, Bishop of Nyssa and his sister Macrina, Deaconess The Consecration and Ordination of a Bishop The ministry of the church is the ministry of Christ, its chief shepherd and high priest. Those who are ordained are called to share Christ’s work, to speak in his name and build up the Church of which Christ is the head. This service of ordination perpetuates a pattern of ministry in direct continuity—through a long line of succession—with the apostles. Just as Jesus commissioned his first disciples, so by the laying on of hands the President will commission this disciple to mission. That is, to witness to the resurrection and to preach the good news of salvation in all the world. The particular role of the Bishop—while remaining a deacon and priest—is to proclaim and guard the faith, to preside of the sacraments, to lead the Church’s prayer and to hand on its ministry. During the service the candidates will be asked to confirm their commitment to these priorities. All who are present will be asked to undertake to support the ordination of the candidates, not least because as bishops they will act not just on behalf of particular local Christian communities, but of the whole Church.
