June meeting: It took HOW long to make that piece of lace?

Mary Wardle of Allhallows Museum in Honiton is a lace-maker with more than a needle at her fingertips: she’s got facts galore at her fingertips, too.

www.adams-locks.co.uk Wild and Woolly in Wellies!

This was the joyful title of a wonderful day involving 400 school children and 600 Lleyn sheep, hosted by Sarah and Chris, sheep farmers in Staple Fitzpaine, back in May.

With many local volunteers, a gang of shearers, sheep dog handlers, wool craft artists, meat exporters and FWAG, the children had a thoroughly enjoyable and educational day.

Organised in class groups of 20-30, it began with learning about the sheep breed, lambing and rearing orphan lambs and triplets and then observing the sheep in the fields. Then they learnt about how sheep are handled – using sheep dogs to herd them, and the sheep equipment. The children were mesmerised by the sheep dog display! After that it was off to meet the shearers: the children first had the manual system explained by a local farmer/collector, and then the Australian Perrott Hill shearers demonstrated their art and some children had a go! We learnt about the grading of fleeces, the processing and spinning, weaving/knitting of wool, plus the grading of fatstock for the butcher, and were rewarded by delicious Styles sheeps Time and space for a full education milk ice-cream from North Somerset.
