The Shrine of St. Joseph Page 1 Proclamation of the Birth of Christ From the Roman

Ancient Christian scholars used Sacred Scripture, histories and the best calendars available at the time to calculate the age of the world and the dates of prominent events. Although current evidence often differs from the ancient record, the Christmas Proclamation, a part of the Roman Martyrology declares the Incarnation of Christ as the central moment of human history. The Twenty-fifth Day of December, when ages beyond number had run their course from the creation of the world, when God in the beginning created heaven and earth, and formed man in his own likeness; when century upon century had passed since the Almighty set his bow in the clouds after the Great Flood, as a sign of covenant and peace; in the twenty-first century since , our father in faith, came out of Ur of the Chaldees; in the thirteenth century since the People of Israel were led by in the Exodus from Egypt; around the thousandth year since was anointed King; in the sixty-fifth week of the prophecy of ; in the one hundred and ninety-fourth Olympiad; in the year seven hundred and fifty-two since the foundation of the City of ; in the forty-second year of the reign of Caesar Octavian , the whole world being at peace, JESUS CHRIST, eternal God and Son of the eternal Father, desiring to consecrate the world by his most loving presence, was conceived by the Holy Spirit, and when nine months had passed since his conception, was born of the Virgin Mary in Bethlehem of Judah, and was made man: The Nativity of Our Lord Jesus Christ according to the flesh. First Reading 9:1-6 A son is given us. A reading from the Book of the Prophet Isaiah The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light; upon those who dwelt in the land of gloom a light has shone. You have brought them abundant joy and great rejoicing, as they rejoice before you as at the harvest, as people make merry when dividing spoils. For the yoke that burdened them, the pole on their shoulder, and the rod of their taskmaster you have smashed, as on the day of Midian. For every boot that tramped in battle, every cloak rolled in blood, will be burned as fuel for flames. For a child is born to us, a son is given us; upon his shoulder dominion rests. They name him Wonder-Counselor, God-Hero, Father-Forever, Prince of Peace. His dominion is vast and forever peaceful, from David’s throne, and over his kingdom, which he confirms and sustains by judgment and justice, both now and forever. The zeal of the Lord of hosts will do this! The Word of the Lord. All: Thanks be to God.

Let the heavens be glad and the earth rejoice; let the sea and what fills it resound; let the plains be joyful and all that is in them! Then shall all the trees of the forest exult. (R.) Today is born our Savior, Christ the Lord.

They shall exult before the Lord, for he comes; for he comes to rule the earth. He shall rule the world with justice and the peoples with his constancy. (R.) Today is born our Savior, Christ the Lord.

A reading from the holy Gospel according to Luke. All: Glory to you, O Lord.

In those days a decree went out from Caesar Augustus that the whole world should be enrolled. This was the first enrollment, when was governor of . So all went to be enrolled, each to his own town. And Joseph too went up from from the town of Nazareth to , to the city of David that is called Bethlehem, because he was of the house and family of David, to be enrolled with Mary, his betrothed, who was with child. While they were there, the time came for her to have her child, and she gave birth to her firstborn son. She wrapped him in swaddling clothes and laid him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn. Now there were shepherds in that region living in the fields and keeping the night watch over their flock. The of the Lord appeared to them and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were struck with great fear. The angel said to them, “Do not be afraid; for behold, I proclaim to you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. For today in the city of David a savior has been born for you who is Christ and Lord. And this will be a sign for you: you will find an infant wrapped in swaddling clothes and lying in a manger.” And suddenly there was a multitude of the heavenly host with the angel, praising God and saying: “Glory to God in the highest and on earth peace to those on whom his favor rests.” The Gospel of the Lord. All: Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.

Page 8 The Nativity of Our Lord Jesus Christ ΑΩ Profession of Faith I believe in one God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all things visible and invisible. I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Only Begotten Son of God, born of the Father before all ages. God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, consubstantial with the Father; through him all things were made. For us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven, At the words that follow, up to and including and became man, all kneel. and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and became man. For our sake he was crucified under , he suffered death and was buried, and rose again on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is adored and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. I believe in one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church. I confess one Baptism for the forgiveness of sins and I look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen.

Page 14 The Nativity of Our Lord Jesus Christ ΑΩ Communion Anthem O Holy Night Adolphe Charles arranged by: John Rutter O Holy Night! The stars are brightly shining, It is the night of the dear Saviour’s birth. Long lay the world in sin and error pining. Till He appeared and the Spirit felt its worth. A thrill of hope the weary world rejoices, For yonder breaks a new and glorious morn. Fall on your knees! Oh, hear the angel voices! O night divine, the night when Christ was born; O night, O Holy Night , O night divine! O night, O Holy Night , O night divine! Led by the light of faith serenely beaming, With glowing hearts by His cradle we stand. And led by light of a star sweetly gleaming, here came the wisemen from out of the Orient land. The King of kings lay thus lowly manger; In all our trials born to be our friends. He knows our need, our weakness is no stranger, Behold your King! Before him lowly bend! Behold your King! Before him lowly bend! Truly He taught us to love one another, His law is love and His gospel is peace. Chains he shall break, for the slave is our brother. And in his name all oppression shall cease. Sweet hymns of praise in grateful chorus raise we, With all our hearts we praise His holy name. Christ is the Lord! Then ever, ever praise we, His power and glory ever more proclaim! His power and glory ever more proclaim!

St. Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle. Be our defense against the wickedness and snares of the Devil. May God rebuke him, we humbly pray, and do thou, O Prince of the heavenly hosts, by the power of God, thrust into hell , and all the evil spirits, who prowl about the world seeking the ruin of souls. Amen.

The Shrine of St. Joseph Catholic Church Page 17 Prayer before the Nativity Scene

O sweet Child of Bethlehem, grant that we may share with all our hearts in this profound mystery of Christmas. Put into the hearts of men and women this peace for which they sometimes seek so desperately and which you alone can give to them. Help them to know one another better, and to live as brothers and sisters, children of the same Father. Reveal to them also your beauty, holiness and purity. Awaken in their hearts love and gratitude for your infinite goodness. Join them all together in your love. And give us your heavenly peace. Amen.

Act of Spiritual Communion (For those who cannot, now receive Communion)

My Jesus, I believe that You are present in the Most Blessed Sacrament. I love You above all things, and I desire to receive You into my soul. Since I cannot now receive You sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart. As though You have already come, I embrace You and unite myself entirely to You; never permit me to be separated from You. Amen.

Prayer of Thanksgiving after Reception of the Holy Eucharist My Lord Jesus Christ, most sweet and most kind, who even now, of Thy great goodness, has entered into this poor and humble abode, adorn it and enrich it with Thy treasures, that it may be made worthy of Thine indwelling. Take up Thy rest therein, that my heart may find its rest in Thee alone. Let it not suffice Thee, O Lord, to have given me Thy sacred Body; give me also the treasures of grace which Thou bringest with Thee; for it will profit me little to eat the Bread of life, if I remain unfed by Thy grace. Give me, O Lord, a heart completely transformed into Thee by love; give me a life that shall be all Thine, a quiet death that shall be the beginning of eternal life. That is what I look for, pray and hope for from Thee, my eternal God, by virtue of this Blessed Sacrament. Amen.
