Great reliance is placed on the form of the parameres of the male genitalia to distinguish Dyscinetus species. This is necessary because the body form and external sculpturing are often so similar between certain taxa that reliable separation based on these characters in impossible.

Murray, Tom Boellstorff & Kathryn Robinson A series of debates in anthropology and other disciplines since the 1980s has raised questions of area studies, comparison, and ‘the field’ in relation to the production of ethnographic knowledge. In search of a concrete framework within which to extend these debates, participants in this special issue of Anthropological Forum bring together research on Southeast Asia and the Caribbean: the ‘East Indies’ and the ‘West Indies’. This introductory paper examines how such a novel paradigm for ethnographic analysis might contribute to new geographic imaginaries in anthropology. Keywords: East Indies; West Indies; Comparison; Area Studies; Anthropology Why compare the East Indies and West Indies? Indeed, can we even consider each of these entities as single geographical units? What is to be gained from such a project? At first glance, these regions appear to share nothing more than nomenclature, geographical form and general historical contours—two sets of islands located in big oceans (often with some associated ‘mainland’ regions), both (mis)named by European explorers, that have been powerfully shaped by colonialism, capitalism and globalisation. The contemporary political and economic contours of these two areas add to the appearance of distinct and non-comparable cultural regions: in the West Indies we find a mix of independent nation-states and ‘neo’ colonies or dependencies maintaining various degrees of political and/or economic affiliation with their former colonisers, whereas most of the East Indies has become one large nation-state (Indonesia).

    Anglo-Dutch Economic Relations in the Atlantic World, 1688–1783 Kenneth Morgan Between the Glorious Revolution and the American Revolution, Britain and the Netherlands had significant economic connections that affected the Atlantic trade of both countries. Anglo-Dutch economic relations had their foundations in various factors. Anglo-Dutch trade had flourished from the Middle Ages onwards. London and Amsterdam were the major financial capi- tals of Europe, with considerable interaction among them. The English and the Dutch were natural allies as maritime powers between 1674, the end of the Third Anglo-Dutch War, and 1780, when after a century of almost complete neutrality in major wars, Britain and Holland became embroiled in conflict during the American Revolutionary War. In the period covered in this paper, harmonious relations between Britain and the Netherlands were embedded in formal treaties dated 1674, 1675 and 1678.1 Anglo-Dutch involvement in colonial affairs antedated that time: Dutch merchants had carried out extensive com- merce with Virginia in the mid-seventeenth century and the Dutch communi- ty’s commercial activities in New Netherland continued after England captured that colony in 1664 and renamed it New York.     The Changing Structure of 'Philadelphia's Trade With the "British West Indies, 1750-1775 ESPITE the magnitude of Philadelphia's trade with the British West Indies, scholarly literature has done little to D probe beyond textbook generalizations about the com- modities exchanged and the overall significance of this commerce for the Quaker Colony.1 Thus, not much is known about the profit- ability of this trade. And important questions are unanswered. Which groups—Pennsylvanians, West Indians, or Englishmen— supplied the capital and made the decisions when to ship? Who assumed the risks or received most of the gains ? As will be suggested below, there were important changes in the financing and control of Philadelphia's trade with the British West Indies near the end of the colonial period. Before 1763 speculative voyages, which were financed and initiated by Philadelphians, characterized exchanges with the sugar islands. After that date such voyages declined in importance and new commercial relations, in which West Indians and Englishmen played a more forward role, became increasingly significant. This article examines the nature and profitability of speculative ventures, with special emphasis on the 1750s, and analyzes the broad developments which transformed this commerce after 1763: first, the change in the shuttle or direct trade from speculative voyages to commission business; and second, the growth in the 1 AH manuscripts, unless otherwise indicated, are located in the Historical Society of Pennsylvania. They begin in the north nearest Florida with Cuba and the Ba­ hama Islands and end with Trinidad off the coast of South America. Cuba, Jamaica, Haiti, and San Domingo, and Por­ to Rico are called the Greater Antilles. The Lesser Antilles include the smaller islands which seem to be mere dots in the Caribbean Sea. The British West Indies, which will de­ mand our direct attention, are also regarded from the col­ onial point of view as including British Honduras and Guiana on the mainland.

French West Indies collection Collection 219 French West Indies Collection, 1712-1757 1 box, 0.2 lin. feet Collection 219 Abstract Following in the footsteps of the Dutch and British, French settlers arrived in the Caribbean in the 1630s and established trading ports on the islands of Saint-Domingue (later Hispaniola), Martinique, and Guadeloupe. The settlers, with the aid of indentured servants and later African slaves, cultivated numerous crops that were eventually exported to France. Philippe Buache was most likely the official cartographer of her royal highness, the Queen of France. In this capacity, he explored the West Indies with the goal of creating physical and geographical depictions of the French colonies and their environs. The French West Indies collection spans from 1712 to 1757 and is written primarily in French. It consists mainly of correspondence sent from merchants in the French West Indies and the geographical writings of cartographer Philippe Buache. The papers offer insight into the geography and trade of the West Indies in the eighteenth century; Buache also wrote about the geography of Australia and Antarctica. Most of the letters were apparently captured by an English privateer during the English-French War of Austrian Succession (1740-1748) and never reached their destination, but were probably carried into some part of the English colonies in America.
