Bio: Broke the U20 World Record twice on his way to the 2017 New Balance Indoor National Championship in the 60-meter hurdles, running 7.40 in the final at The Armory in NYC…it marked the third time the Winfield City High senior broke the national high school record in his final year...ran 7.47 for the record in January and lowered it to 7.45 in the New Balance Nationals semis, before his record-smashing run in the final...broke the previously held by Grant Holloway, who won the NCAA 60-meter and 110-meter hurdle titles as a freshman at Florida in 2017...incredibly versatile track & field athlete who in addition to the hurdles has excelled from 60-400 meters as well as the long and triple jump…is a 24-time Alabama state champion for Winfield City High School, including 20 individual titles…owns personal-bests of 6.78 (60m dash), 10.76 (100m), 13.35 (110 hurdles), 38.34 (300 hurdles) and 23-4 (long jump), among other events…was limited by injury during his senior outdoor season…also played three years of basketball and two years of cross country…member of the National Honor Society…plans to major in exercise physiology…the son of Brad and Shelly Cunningham… father coached football and basketball at Winfield City High...mother was a star point guard atAlabama...born Aug. 26, 1998. SACRAMENTO, California. — Aries Merritt will be making a return to the world championships. This time, with a working kidney. The world-record holder Merritt finished second behind Aleec Harris in the 110-meter hurdles at the U.S. track and field championships Sunday. His place — as long as it was top three — didn’t really matter. He just wanted a spot. Harris proved uncatchable as he finished in 13.24 seconds. Merritt was 0.07 seconds behind. Merritt won bronze at the 2015 world championships in Beijing with his kidneys barely functioning because of a genetic disorder. He received the transplant from his sister less than a week later. Now healthy, he’s ready to see what he can do with worlds being held at the venue where he won an Olympic gold medal during the 2012 London Games. “I always felt once I was healthy, all it would take is for me to put in the work,” Merritt ex- plained. “That’s something I’ve been lacking.
