Massachusetts 2020 Baseball Rules Changes
Massachusetts 2020 Baseball Rules Changes We are now playing NFHS Rules. Below is a summary of the rule changes. For more information, visit the Baseball Page of the MIAA website. This will be updated as needed. miaa.net “Sports & Tournaments Tab” Sport Pages Baseball 2020 Baseball Rule Page Per the MIAA, all leagues at all levels need to follow all NFHS Rules without any adjustments. HIGHLIGHTS (“TOP TEN” LIST) 1. Pitch Counts ~ The official Pitch Count Limitations & Procedures are available on the MIAA baseball site (and attached here) Coaches are required to have someone track the number of pitches that their pitchers and their opponents throw. At the conclusion of each game both coaches will need to sign the official Pitch Count Sheet and keep these with them. The MIAA will email AD’s a PDF of the official sheet that coaches need to fill out 2. Courtesy Runners Allowed at any time for pitcher or catcher Runner is tied to position he runs for; a given runner may not run for both pitcher and catcher Anyone who's been in the game may not be a runner; runner may not be sub in same half inning in which he courtesy runs Courtesy runners need to be reported as such. Failure to do so makes them a “normal substitute” Umpires need to record courtesy runners on line-up card Once a player is a courtesy runner for a position, he can only continue to courtesy run for a player in that particular position Case Book Plays are available on the MIAA Website 3. -

The Boston Red Sox Friday, November 15, 2019 * The Boston Globe Xander Bogaerts finishes fifth in American League MVP race Julian McWilliams Xander Bogaerts finished fifth in American League MVP Award voting, the highest of his career. The Red Sox shortstop was 13th in 2013. Bogaerts hit .309 with a career-high 33 homers and 117 RBIs. Bogaerts tied Nomar Garciaparra for the most extra-base hits in a season by a Red Sox shortstop (85). Garciaparra did it in 1997 and 2002. Bogaerts’s 117 RBIs were the most in a season by a Red Sox shortstop since Garciaparra had 120 in 2002. Bogaerts was just the third shortstop in MLB history with at least a .300 batting average, 85 extra-base hits, and 115-plus RBIs. The others are Alex Rodriguez, in 1996 with the Mariners and 2001 and 2002 with the Texas, and Garciaparra. Bogaerts finished behind the Yankees’ DJ LeMahieu, who pulled in 10 fourth-place votes to Bogaerts’s six. Mookie Betts was eighth, Rafael Devers 12th, and J.D. Martinez was tied for 21st in AL voting. MLB speaks with Alex Cora as it investigates Astros’ sign-stealing Peter Abraham and Alex Speier SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. — Red Sox manager Alex Cora is one of the key figures into Major League Baseball’s investigation of the Houston Astros, an appraisal that goes beyond charges of sign stealing in 2017. Cora, who was bench coach of the Astros in 2017, has spoken to officials charged with determining to what degree Houston flouted rules against using cameras to pick up signs from opposing catchers. -

Alex Gallardo Irene Carlson Gallery of Photography Eyes on the Ball April 11 Through May 20, 2011
Alex Gallardo Irene Carlson Gallery of Photography Eyes on the Ball April 11 through May 20, 2011 An exhibition of photographs Miller Hall, University of La Verne Photographer’s Statement My start in photojournalism began with a slide show program during a beginning photo class at the University of La Verne. It was presented by a well-known photojournalist at the The Sun in San Bernardino, Tom Kasser. His work opened my eyes. Once I had seen what he could do with a camera, it brought me to see, and not just look, at the world around me. Kasser gave me a goal to strive for, to work at The Sun as a staff photographer. Through my undergraduate career I learned the mechanics of the craft. As a lifetime baseball player I already had the competitive gene so I redirected my passion for athletics toward photography. I took a detour in my quest to be a photojournalist after graduating from ULV. A huge mistake cost me thirteen months of my professional life, and almost the use of my legs. I drove a dump truck backwards over a cliff, spent three months in a hospital and at home in a body cast recuperating from injuries. I spent another nine months in physical therapy learning to walk. Doctors told me that I might not regain the use of my legs or walk without assistance for least five years, if ever. Luckily, I had a great physical therapist. We worked hard every day and prayed to regain the use of my legs. Once I began to walk doctors cleared me to continue as a photographer and stay away from driving trucks. -

TAKING POP-UPS SERIOUSLY: THE JURISPRUDENCE OF THE INFIELD FLY RULE NEIL B. COHEN* SPENCER WEBER WALLER** In 1975, the University of Pennsylvania published a remarkable item. Rather than being deemed an article, note, or comment, it was classified as an "Aside." The item was of course, The Common Law Origins of the Infield Fly Rule.' This piece of legal scholarship was remarkable in numerous ways. First, it was published anonymously and the author's identity was not known publicly for decades. 2 Second, it was genuinely funny, perhaps one of the funniest pieces of true scholarship in a field dominated mostly by turgid prose and ineffective attempts at humor by way of cutesy titles or bad puns. Third, it was short and to the point' in a field in which a reader new to law reviews would assume that authors are paid by the word or footnote. Fourth, the article was learned and actually about something-how baseball's infield fly rule4 is consistent with, and an example of, the common law processes of rule creation and legal reasoning in the Anglo-American tradition. -

Indians' Catching Combo Is Club's Safety Net by Jack Magruder Special to MLB.Com PHOENIX -- a Few Things Define the Cleveland Catching Combo
Indians' catching combo is club's safety net By Jack Magruder Special to MLB.com PHOENIX -- A few things define the Cleveland catching combo. They both want to play every day. They both could. Neither makes a big deal out of it. Yan Gomes and Roberto Perez could make a strong case as the best 1-2 punch in the American League, and it starts with their work on the defensive side, the less glamorous but more valuable part of the job, considering the demands each game presents. A catcher might bat four times a game; he will call roughly 150 pitches and face around 15 runners looking to connive their way into an extra base. Gomes put it nicely into perspective. "Some hitters are home run hitters," he said. "We are throw-out guys." Yes. Yes, they are. Not that offense is an afterthought, of course. Gomes and Perez combined to drive in 94 runs last season, which was third among AL catching groups. Their 22 homers, 14 by Gomes, was exactly the league average. The other side of the ball is where they separate themselves. Cleveland catchers threw out 43 percent of attempted basestealers last season, the best percentage in the Majors, the second season in three in which the Indians finished in the top two and the fourth consecutive year in the top five. The Major League average was 26 percent. There is little wonder why Cleveland calls among the fewest pitchouts in the league. "We like throwing out guys," Gomes said. "We like controlling our staff. -
