Haier, Midea and Samsung lead the major 2 home appliance industry Haier, Midea and Samsung are leading the major home appliance (MHA) market, accounting for almost 30 percent of unit shipments in 2018, according to the latest edition of Omdia’s Major Home Appliances Vendor Scorecard Report. In a range between a minimum of 1.0 and a maximum of 5.0, Haier came in with the highest overall score, at 4.5, indicating strong adoption of its solutions. Haier was followed by Midea and Samsung, with equal scores of 4.3 between. In another score measuring market momentum and potential for expansion, Haier also achieved the highest score of 4.4, closely followed by Midea and in third position Samsung with 4.3 and 3.6 points, respectively. “The market leadership of Haier, Midea and Samsung is the result of their efforts to offer solutions that address every segment of the MHA market,” said Liliana Alvarez Temix, senior analyst, smart home and appliances for Omdia. “Riding on their positive momentum, these companies are likely to cement and expand their leadership positions in the future.” Haier offers IoT ecosystem for home appliances Haier has consolidated its leadership position through the integration of brands in its portfolio and the development of its own IoT ecosystem, called U+. The ecosystem provides online customer support services that guide users on how to install, use, clean and maintain home appliances. One of the technological innovations giving Haier its competitive edge is the embedded voice control function in its air conditioners, wall ovens, refrigerators and washing machines as well as other connected appliances. The company has also distinguished itself with the air-purifying function of its room air conditioners and the food-recognition capabilities of its microwaves. GE © 2020 Omdia. All rights reserved. Haier, Midea and Samsung lead the major 3 home appliance industry Appliances, a subsidiary of Haier, has also reinvented the stove-top ventilation appliance with its Kitchen Hub that doubles as a smart home control center. Midea stresses environmental innovations Midea, the second largest MHA manufacturer globally, is also delivering industry-changing innovations. To satisfy the demand for more environmentally- friendly appliances in Europe, Midea plans to launch an energy and water- efficient double drawer dishwasher, which gives users the option to use a single drawer to clean smaller loads. The brand has also developed a refrigerator with the flexibility to switch off compartments that are not being used and that can be used either for refrigeration or freezing. Midea also has embedded voice control in several of its air conditioner, refrigerator and wall oven models. Midea and Haier are among the few brands with appliances that are not only supported by their own IoT platforms, but also are compatible with the leading digital assistants: Amazon Alexa, Google Assistant and Alibaba’s Tmall AliGenie. Samsung strives to create unified experience for consumers Samsung ranked first in brand strength due to its SmartThings platform, which combines its brands with thousands of others to create a unified experience. When it comes to technological innovation in home appliances, Samsung is one of the top choices due to the integration of air-purifying features in its room air conditioners. Room air conditioners are in demand in Asia and are one of the main areas of focus among the top brands. This is expected since these products contribute the most to the global MHA market in terms of shipment. Room air conditioners also have the highest penetration rate when it comes to connected major home appliances. © 2020 Omdia. All rights reserved. Unauthorized reproduction prohibited. Haier, Midea and Samsung lead the major 4 home appliance industry Going one step beyond its competition, Samsung has incorporated computer vision technology in its refrigerators. Furthermore, Samsung was one of the first to market an embedded voice control (Bixby) as a feature in its major home appliances. Another innovative feature that’s common across the Haier, Midea and Samsung product lines is automatic soap/detergent dispensing. The latest washing machines and dishwashers from these brands use artificial intelligence to detect the load size and even soil-level and then dispense the precise amount of cleaning solution. This has been a positive innovation that has resonated well with consumers looking for environmentally-friendly appliances. blakekozakinformacom_2020_3_26_18_45_45_rankgraphjpg1 © 2020 Omdia. Appliance Satisfaction Remains High as Customers Focus on Reliability, J.D. Power Finds Samsung Wins 9 and LG Wins 2 Segment Awards; Best Buy Ranks Highest among Appliance Retailers TROY, Mich.: 22 July 2021 — During the past year, there were similar amounts of appliance shoppers needing new appliances because their existing ones failed, as there were customers needing to service their appliance but opted to purchase a new one, according to the J.D. Power 2021 Appliance Satisfaction Study,SM released today. With total price paid for appliances increasing from 2020, customers are valuing good price points, sales and brand reviews when selecting a new appliance. “Since the uncertainty that came from 2020, we continue to see appliance customers prioritize performance and reliability over features, styling,” said Christina Cooley, home intelligence lead at J.D. Power. “Even if a customer’s existing appliance could be fixed, many were opting to purchase a new one that could better meet the current demands of everyone being home 24/7 and not wanting to worry about long-term dependability. Customers are taking their time—around 10 days—to research and decide what appliance is right for them.” The Appliance Satisfaction Study measures customer satisfaction in 12 segments of major home appliances: cooktops; freestanding ranges; wall ovens; over-the-range microwaves; dishwashers; French door refrigerators; side-by-side refrigerators; top-mount freezer, two-door refrigerators; front-load clothes washers; top-load clothes washers; clothes dryers; and appliance retailers. Study Rankings Cooktop Samsung (896) ranks highest in customer satisfaction among cooktops, followed by LG (893) and GE (868).

This led to the development of vacuum cleaners that could assist us with such a task. Modern appliances are delivering convenience and reducing time spent on house chores. While vacuum cleaners have made home cleaning manageable, they are mostly noisy and bulky for everyday use. Modern robotic vacuums deliver consistent performance and enhanced cleaning features, but continue to struggle with uneven terrain and navigation challenges. This whitepaper will take a more in-depth look at the problem faced by the robotic vacuum cleaner (RVC) in avoiding obstacles and entanglement and how we can arrive at a solution depending on the functionalities. 3 [email protected] Optimizing cleaning efficiency of robotic vacuum cleaner 2.0 INTRODUCTION The earliest robotic vacuums did one thing passably well. They danced randomly over a smooth or flat surface, sucking up some dirt and debris until their battery charge got low and they had to return to their docks. They could more or less clean a space without the ability to understand it. Today’s robotic cleaners have made huge strides over the past few years.

EPR Case Study: Japan January 14 2014 Title: EPR-based Electronic Home Appliance Recycling System under Home Appliance Recycling Act of Japan Authors: Dr. Yasuhiko Hotta, Institute for Global Environmental Strategies, Japan, Atsushi Santo, Institute for Global Environmental Strategies, Japan, Dr. Tomohiro Tasaki, National Institute of Environmental Studies, Japan Country: Japan Contact Person: Dr. Yasuhiko Hotta, Institute for Global Environmental Strategies, Japan [email protected] Title of the EPR-related Legislation: Act for Recycling of Specified Kinds of Home Appliances (“Home Appliance Recycling Act”) Dates of the Enactment and Enforcement: Enacted in June 1998; came into full force in April 2001 1. Legal Aspects: Overview of the Home Appliance Recycling Act Background to the enactment of the Home Appliance Recycling Act In the late 1990s, Japan began its efforts to improve legislation concerning various kinds of waste and their recycling. These efforts were prompted by increases in the types and quantities of waste, which were driven by the increase in consumption and the permeation of the throwaway culture. These changes were due to changing lifestyles, which in turn were associated with (i) rapid economic growth and urbanization of Japan, and (ii) the advent of the consumer era that was made possible by the so-called “economic bubble” during the 1980s. Until the Home Appliance Recycling Act came into force in 2001, the increase in both the types and quantities of waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) was making it more and more difficult for municipalities alone to manage WEEE in environmentally sound manner. Due to its incombustibility, WEEE was shredded to recover some recyclables.
