Clear Your Head Mental Health Campaign – Winter Launch.

This year winter looks very different due to restrictions, and people who might usually have good general mental wellbeing may be feeling worn down. For those of you who saw the First Minister’s briefing there was a strong focus on mental health, and Dr Alistair Cook spoke about the support available to those who may be needing help.

Our December Clear Your Head campaign focussed on connecting with others to help lift spirits during the festive period. With the festive period now over, we know January can often feel like a difficult month. Our new campaign for January encourages people to be kind to themselves at

SignVideo names SignHealth as their Charity of the Year We are pleased to announce that we have chosen SignHealth as our Charity partner of the year! This exciting relationship between a Deaf company and a Deaf charity is really inspiring, and the support from SignVideo will allow SignHealth to achieve its ambitious 3-year plan to expand their services to improve Deaf people’s health and wellbeing. SignVideo’s BSL video interpretation solution removes existing barriers facing service providers, businesses, work colleagues and family wanting to hold conversations with Deaf BSL-using people. In addition, their service has reduced the previous waiting time of 3 to 6 weeks for a BSL interpreter to be available, down to an average of 30 seconds or less. There is a growing awareness about mental health among the Deaf community, but much more needs to be done. The average wait for a Deaf person to receive therapy is 12 weeks, compared to 6 weeks for a hearing person. Together, we want to improve access and achieve health equality for Deaf people. The partnership will start on 1st January 2021 for 3 years.

For more information about the work SignHealth does please visit the SignHealth website https://signhealth.org.uk/ and SignVideo’s website https://signvideo.co.uk/ ______From See Me Scotland Time to Talk day on Thursday 4 February

Time to Talk day is running across the whole of the UK and Ireland. It’s been a great success in previous years. In 2020, over 600 workplaces, schools, universities, football teams, youth clubs and others joined the conversation about mental health in Scotland alone. While, on social media, #TimetoTalk was trending at number 1 in the UK and number 2 worldwide.

It’s going to be a bit different this time around. Many of us won’t be able to get together like we normally would. But that doesn’t mean you can’t help create millions of conversations and show that talking about mental health is even more vital than it ever has been. 6

Too many people with mental health problems are still made to feel isolated, worthless and ashamed, and more people than ever have struggled with their mental health this year. Small things can make a big difference though. So, that’s why our theme is “The Power of Small”.

You can get involved by downloading materials from our website, along with our Communications and Activity ideas pack, to start you thinking about how you can do Time to Talk virtually. We aren’t sending out our Time to Talk resource packs like we normally do this year to ensure the day adheres to government guidelines on social distancing. However we will have some posters and postcards available to order from us, if you are in a place where people are still getting together.

But there are lots of downloadable and digital resources including our digital bingo, where you, and your friends/ family/ colleagues can play to see how many things you can do to start conversations.

During lockdown getting little gifts and cards from our friends and family can make a huge difference. So this Time to Talk day, why not send a Time to Talk post card to someone you haven’t seen in a while, and ask ‘how are you’?

Get everything you need to download, activity packs, and resources to order here.

Maureen Watt, David Torrance, Richard Lyle, Alex Cole-Hamilton, Gil Paterson ______S5W-33721 Colin Smyth (South Scotland) (Scottish Labour): To ask the Scottish Government whether people providing assistance to someone with sight loss or a disabled person in order for them to be able to (a) exercise outside, such as with walking or tandem cycling, and (b) participate in organised sport are exempt from the COVID-19 rules on social distancing.

Mairi Gougeon: The Health Protection (Coronavirus) (Restrictions and Requirements) (Local Levels) (Scotland) Regulations 2020 provide that so far as reasonably practical, a person who is providing a service or carrying on a business 5 must take measures to ensure the required distance is maintained by any persons on its premises. However, where a disabled person requires assistance in order to take part in sport or physical activity, it may not be reasonably practical to ensure physical distancing is maintained. In addition, there are exemptions to these provisions for carers and the person assisted by that carer, whether that care is provided on a paid or voluntary basis. Please see Scottish Government guidance for those who provide guide support: Coronavirus (COVID-19): guidance for those providing guide support - gov.scot (www.gov.scot ) ______

S5W-33690 Neil Bibby (West Scotland) (Scottish Labour): To ask the Scottish Government, in light of the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and subsequent reported increase in waiting times, what steps it is taking to prevent avoidable sight loss because of delays for eye care appointments, surgery and treatment. Jeane Freeman: The Scottish Government is fully committed to supporting ophthalmology services across Scotland and the management of waiting times and delays to eye care treatment. The Scottish Government has made available £3 million of additional funding to NHS Boards in the current financial year to support community optometrists to manage the care of some hospital patients with eye conditions. This will ensure that more patients can safely receive the care they require. An additional £4.5 million capital funding has been provided to NHS Boards to support the upgrade of imaging and examination equipment. Through work to reduce waiting times and delays, patients are being risk stratified on a continual basis ensuring that those patients with sight- threatening conditions are given priority. Where possible, patients are

17 being managed remotely where using Attend Anywhere/Near Me software, and telephone calls. These virtual clinics are also being used to safely manage patients who require assessments through automated examinations with the results are reviewed by medical teams. Finally, NHS Golden Jubilee opened their new cataract treatment centre in December and additional staff are being recruited to support this.

S5W-33691 Neil Bibby (West Scotland) (Scottish Labour): To ask the Scottish Government how the reported increases in waiting times and delays for eye care treatment, including cataract surgery, are being managed across ophthalmology services to prevent avoidable sight loss. Jeane Freeman: I refer the member to the answer to question S5W- 33690 on 7 January 2021. This answer provides detail of what initiatives are being put in place to support Ophthalmology across NHS Scotland. All answers to written parliamentary questions are available on the Parliament's website, the search facility for which can be found at http://www.parliament.scot/parliamentarybusiness/28877.aspx
