It brought together most of the researchers in Austria working on African issues inclu- ding linguistic, historical, literary, sociological, economic and political approaches. After this particularly successful workshop the follow-up “Afrikaforschung in Öster- reich: Zugänge und Einordnungen” was held at the University of Innsbruck in March 2015. The overall aim was to invite not only the participants from the first workshop to present their projects and papers, but at the same time to expand the existing network by also reaching out to young post-doctoral students in Austria to contribute to this Austrian network of scholars whose main research field is African Studies, the study of African societies, their history, economy, language, and literature. It featured topics as diverse as “The African Diaspora”, “Barbary Coast Captivity Narratives”, “The Nigerian writer Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie”, “The History of Political Ideas in Africa”, “The Tension between Developmentalism and Democracy in Ethiopia”, “Climate Change, Conflicts, and Development: Problems for Africa’s ‘Limited Access Orders’“, “Science Under Nazism: Recent Biographical Research On Wilhelm Czer- mak”, “The UN: Under the Guise of colonial-political Interests During the Cold War”, “Manpower Development: CVs and Interactions in the German-Tanzanian Triangular Relationship, 1970-1990“, and “Higher Education in Eastern Africa: A Comparison of Public and Private Universities in Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda“. The workshop was rounded off by an exhibition entitled “Bitter Oranges: African Migrant workers in Calabria” showcasing the inhumane conditions African workers suffer from on the orange plantations in in southern Italy, a cooperation between the University of 8 Preface Innsbruck (namely the research area “Cultural Encounters – Cultural Conflicts”) and the Künstlerhaus Büchsenhausen.1 These workshops of different scholars working in African studies on a yearly basis are unique because they provide a forum for an interdisciplinary exchange of ideas and perspectives and a fruitful dialogue with possible collaborations between the different universities in Austria. The challenge of bringing together so many disci- plines dealing with heterogeneous approaches consists in identifying what Stuart Hall calls the “recovery of lost histories. The histories that have never been told about our- selves that we could not learn in schools, that were not in any books, and that we had to recover […]. That is how and where the margins begin to speak. The margins begin to contest, the locals begin to come to representation.”2 The term representation is thus an integral part of the various approaches the different scholars adopt in this volume including issues such as identity, self- and other-representation, collective memory, the past and its effect on the present. Re- presentation as such is inextricably linked with telling stories, stories about Africa. According to Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, a third-generation Nigerian writer, we have to be aware of the danger of the “single story” as a single story changes the way we see history: that is why we have to be aware of the responsibility we have as tellers of “stories”. Adichie claims that the single story her roommate in America had about her was “a single story of catastrophe. In this single story, there was no possibility of Africans being similar to her in any way, no possibility of feelings more complex than pity, no possibility of a connection as human equals.”3 Telling stories about Africa is thus of particular relevance because we have to be aware of who tells these “stories”, how, when, and why, and of the fact that the perspectives we adopt to a great extent also pertain to power relations: 1 In the context of this research area (respectively one of its predecessors), already in 2012 the collective volume Afrika: Kontinent der Extreme (with contributions in German and English) was published with innsbruck uni- versity press. Ulrich Pallua & Andreas Exenberger 9 “Power is the ability not just to tell the story of another person, but to make it the definitive story of that person. The Palestinian poet Mourid Barghouti writes that if you want to dispossess a people, the simplest way to do it is to tell their story and to start with, ’secondly’. Start the story with the arrows of the Native Americans, and not with the arrival of the British, and you have an entirely dif- ferent story. Start the story with the failure of the African state, and not with the colonial creation of the African state, and you have an entirely different story.“4 What Adichie means here is that in order to tell a “different” story about Africa, many stories have to be told and taken into account as only then will we be able to gauge how the single story has been misinterpreted and misused by power-related discourses and to start talking about how “stories can also be used to empower and to humanise. Stories can break the dignity of a people, but stories can also repair that broken dignity.”5 The articles in this volume all tell different “stories” from literary, historical, sociological, and socio-political perspectives and focus on various aspects of African identity in order to counteract prejudices and refute stereotypical and biased representations – that is, a “single story” of Africa. This collection of essays starts with Arno Sonderegger’s article The Modernity of Pan- Africanism: From History and Politics to Popular Culture. It deals with the history of modernity in Africa, how the concept of modern Africa is inextricably bound up with the colonial past, and how nineteenth-century colonial domination impacted on the development of the “new states” in Africa. After drawing a phenomenological sketch of Pan-Africanism including aspects of anti-colonialism, anti-imperialism, and anti- racism in the development of a “modern” Africa he introduces the different approa- ches to Pan-Africanism of Youssou N’Dour, Kwame Nkrumah, Cheikh Anta Diop, and Bantu Stephen Biko. A similar approach in even closer connection to the arts is also adopted by Birgit Englert. Her article Reflections on the Role and Production of Research Films in African Studies analyzes the role and production of research films in African Studies, including not only the relevance of audio-visual work in general but also reflections on how to work with film in research processes. Only after the mid 1930‘s did the state effectively segregate the city and move most of the black working classes to the municipal locations that they live in today. The culture that was created in the slums of Johannesburg is significant for a number of reasons. This culture shows that the newly formed 1 urban african classes wore not merely the passive agents of capitalism. These people were able to respond, collectively, to the conditions that the development of capitalism thrust them into and to shape and influence the conditions and pro­ cesses that they were subjected to. The culture that embodied these popular res­ ponses was so pervasive that it's name, Marabi, is also the name given by many people to the era, between the two world wars, when it thrived.

    Regional Conference on Diversity Theme: Diversity, Democracy and Federalism: issues, options and opportunities June 7-9, 2011 at Kathmandu, Nepal Key Note Speech and Canadian Model: Mr. Rupak Chattopadhyay, President and CEO Forum of Federations Good morning every one, and thank you Zafar and Katherine for a vey lucid words of welcome, I regret very much that this seminar is not in Islamabad, primarily because Nepal is a very active program country for the Forum of Federations, so I will be constantly pulled out of the seminar over the course of the next three days. I would have liked to stay through the entire program. Nevertheless, I am glad that we could put this together. As you all know that the Forum of Federations through its activities in Pakistan has been active on issues of diversity. Indeed the Forum itself was founded in Canada in 1999 in the context of a challenge to Canadian unity posed by its diversity in 1996. The separtist referendum in Quebec almost split the country. It was in that context that the government of Canada set up the Forum of Federations to bring together like minded countries grappling with the issues of unity and diversity. Countries who could sit around the table and share experiences on how they deal with the issue of diversity in their own context and share practices both best practices but also worst practices because we can learn as much from bad practices as we can from best practices. My remarks this morning will be in two parts. First, I will make some general observations about how federal structures respond to challenges posed by diversity in a comparative context and then, I will draw from the Canadian example to high light how we are coping with matters of diversity.

These and other principles constitute some of the cardinal goals of the programme in both public and private universities in Ghana. Considering tertiary education as both a public and private enterprise, this paper seeks to enrich the discourse on African Studies by taking a retrospection of the subject and investigated university students’ perceptions of the discipline among public and privately funded spheres. Adopting a qualitative approach, the paper interviewed students on the relevance of the discipline in a contemporary information technology driven world. The outcome of such interrogation was that African Studies is even more relevant in the era of globalization than it might have been in immediate post independent Africa.

Cuba reliably supported the liberation struggles in countries such as Angola, South Africa and Ethiopia and has continued to offer Cuban troops to serve in several African states. Between May and December 2010, I engaged in semi-structured interviews with twenty-three people who, while living in Ontario, experienced name challenges ranging from persistent, repetitive misspellings and mispronunciations of their original names to cases of significant name alterations on residency documents, and even to situations of exclusion and discrimination. Drawing on critical perspectives from literature on identity and performativity, science and technology studies, race and immigration, affect, and onomastics (the study of names), I establish that name challenges are a form of “identity labour” required of many people who immigrate to Ontario. I also describe how individuals’ identity labour changes over time. In response to name challenges, and the need to balance between their sometimes-simultaneous audiences, participants design their names for life in Ontario—by deciding which audiences to privilege, they choose where they want to belong, and how their names should be. ii Acknowledgments Thank you very, very much to this study’s participants. Indeed, the colonial legacy of the continent, coupled with the history of enslavement of the Black diaspora has demonstrated a very real dilemma for the future of Blacks across the globe. However, the birth of Pan-Africanist thought provided a glimmer of hope for advancing and uniting Black peoples.1 There are varying opinions on how best to define Pan- Africanism, all which generally encompass a similar principle: the unity of Black peoples on the African continent and the African diaspora. London: Hause Publishing. 182 pp. Patrice Lumumba remains an inspirational figure to Congolese and peoples across the developing world for his powerful articulation of economic and political self- determination. But who was the real Lumumba? There are competing myths: for the left he was a messianic messenger of Pan-Africanism; for the right he was angry, unstable and a Communist. He did not leave behind an extensive body of writings to sift through, ponder or analyze. The official canon of his work is short and includes such items as his June 30, 1960 Independence Day speech and the last letter to his wife shortly before his execution. The Patrice Lumumba, the one celebrated in Raoul Peck’s film Lumumba, la mort d’un prophéte does not start to find his own voice until his attendance at the December 1958 First All Africans Peoples’ Conference which leaves him only tenty- five months on the world stage before his death at the age of thirty-five. While there have been other biographies and works on his life, much of it is now out of print or not available in English, Georges Nzongola-Ntalaja’s Patrice Lumumba and Leo Zeilig’s Lumumba: Africa’s Lost Leader have attempted to fill in this biographical vacuum with sympathetic, accessible, and highly readable introductory texts.

    1 Introduction First Caribbean Days in Canada I play cricket for de telephone company in Barbados. It was June of 1975. I went to dis one game up in St. Andrews village and everyt’ing set for me to leave for Canada de following day. And I remember, like it yesterday, as I walkin’ off de fiel’ one of de guys on my team come runnin’ and literally dive at my feet. I had a pair of Gary Sobers boots dat my father brought me from Englan’, see? Dey had de autograph on de side, you know? Dey were pretty new and it hadn’t really occurred to me what I would do wit’ dem when I was leaving, but dis fella, boy, he knew! He dive at me and tek me off me feet. He strip dose boots off me quick fas’ and say “You’re not going to need these where you’re going!” and run away. Well, dat’s what I thought too. I thought, well you know, it’s not likely I play cricket in Canada and I’m not going for life, anyway. I plan to come here for five years and further my education, make some money and den head back. I thought, I’ll get dose boots back soon enough. So I walk de rest of de way home in my bare feet. Den, t’ree weeks later I in my sister’s front room. De doorbell ring an’ I look out de window an’ see dis man dress all in white. I thought, wow, in Canada de bakers deliver de bread! Den I see he don’t have no bread.
