Eighteen-year-old Shelby Delgado sits next to the fifth-wheel trailer criss-cross style a week ago Saturday. A friend teases her about something in the way that friends do. They’re enjoying their afternoon at Woodpecker Mud Bog in White Springs, despite the downpour that started 10 or 15 minutes ago. A few seconds pass. Crack. Boom. Flash. Everything after that is a bit of a blur. “It happened very fast,” Delgado recalled. “It looked like I was looking Delgado into a bright light and it shook my body.” Delgado came to lying on the ground. A fog of confusion wrapped around her mind. “I didn’t know what happened,” she said. “I imme- diately started panicking and screaming.” She looked around and saw the other five people in her group were also knocked down. ‘It happened Her friend, Kourtney very fast,’ Delgado Lambert, 23, was unrespon- sive. OUR OPINION For elections, stay vigilant and focused s the August primary nears, election rhetoric is rising fast, especially at A the city level. We expect it to ratchet up even higher before it’s through. It is clear how some voters — Americans whose most fundamental rights have been stolen here in recent cycles, whether in for form of fraudulent absentee ballots or otherwise — might be tired of business as usual in the politics game. By COREY ARWOOD [email protected] Humane society drums up support for trap, neuter, release. Street cats. They roam sidewalks, shrubbery and storm drains in twos and threes, but mostly they’re alone, peering at patrons of local restaurants walking to their car any given night of the week. Local animal control offi- cials said they are roughly 39,000-strong in Lake City, but they’ve got a feline fix if they can find the funding. Largely harmless to humans, they’re ankle- high predators to anything smaller than themselves, effective at keeping local rodent populations down. Meanwhile their ranks grow. To house cats they can be potential agents of disease like feline leukemia and HIV, LCHS administration said. Facility Manager Tom Barritt called the unchecked cat growth a “major crisis” in the county. But with a strong trap, neuter, release program, he said they could substantially knock back their numbers. It’s only one of three problems the shelter could tackle, given adequate funding for a new low cost spay-neuter clinic. He said they would be poised to stem feral cat tide, and also provide a much needed low cost spay-neuter option for the roughly 12,530 county residents living below COREY ARWOOD/Lake City Reporter poverty levels, according to Tom Barritt, facility manager at the Lake City Humane Society, thinks the best way to deal with 39,000 stray cats in Lake City is a trap, neu- US Census data. ter, release program. At the City of Lake City (COLC), our goal is to continue to provide safe, reliable natural gas service to our customers and ensure the safety of those who live and/or work near our natural gas pipelines.

e objective of this Public Awareness Program is: • To educate the public on how to recognized the odor of natural gas and respond if they detect possible gas odors. Early recognition of gas odor and property response can save lives and property. • To warn the public about potential safety problems with certain exible appliance connectors • To raise awareness about the presence of buried natural gas pipelines in our community • To help the public and excavators understand the steps that they can take to prevent damage and respond properly if they cause damage to our pipelines • To educate the public about how to prepare for hurricane season with regard to natural gas appliances. What Is Natural Gas?

Natural gas is a mixture of hydrocarbon gases, primarily meth ane (CH4), naturally occurring in rock formations deep below the earth’s surface. e natural gas is withdrawn and trans-ported to homes and businesses through an underground sys tem of pipes. Natural Gas Safety Precautions

Natural gas is colorless, odorless, lighter than air, and non-toxic. Breathing natural gas is not harmful as long as there is an adequate supply of fresh air to breathe along with it. Natural gas by itself will not burn, but with the proper mixture of gas and air combined with an ignition source, combustion can occur. Why Does Natural Gas Smell So Bad?

Natural gas is safe, clean, and ecient, but it has no odor. To identify natural gas we add a harmless odorant called mercaptan, which gives natural gas its distinctive “ROTTEN EGG” smell. What Should I Do If I Smell Natural Gas?

e natural gas industry has an outstanding safety record, but if you smell natural gas, in the event of a gas leak inside a building: • Do not turn on or o any lights or appliances. • Do not use your home phone or cell phone in your house. • Do not light matches. • Immediately extinguish any cigarettes or open ames such as candles. • DO leave the building and call COLC from a nearby phone at 386-752-2031 and follow the recorded instructions, then wait for our representative to arrive.

Leaks from natural gas pipelines are extremely rare; however, it is important that you know how to recognize the signs of a leak if one were to occur in your area. A strong odor of “ROTTEN EGGS,” hissing sounds, or dirt blowing up from a hole are signs of a leak.

If you suspect a leak: • Do not try to x the leak. • Do not light matches, smoke, use a cell phone, or attempt to enter or start any vehicle. • DO move away from and upwind of the suspected pipeline leak before calling the Lake City Natural Gas Department at 758-5405.

Follow the recorded instructions, and then wait for our representative to arrive to in vestigate the situation. In any case, if you feel that life or property is in danger, CALL 9-1-1. e Lake City Natural Gas department has an excellent working relationship with our police and re departments. Flammable Vapors and Appliances Are a Dangerous Mix

Natural Gas Appliances Use Pilot Flames to Start the Appliance. Do Not Store Substances with a Flammable Vapor Near a Natural Gas Appliance.

Both gasoline and kerosene produce vapors that can catch re causing severe burns or property damage. Vapors cannot be seen. ey are heavier than air and can move along the oor a good distance from the original source by way of air currents coming from other rooms. An active pilot light on an appliance can light these vapors causing a re.

DO NOT use or store ammable products such as gaso line, solvents, or adhesives in the same room or area where a water heater or any other gas appliance is installed. Keep am mable products stored in approved containers with lids tightly closed, and keep them away from children and appliances. Keep paper, curtains, paints, solvents, etc., away from gas appliances. ey can be a re hazard. Why Be Concerned About Carbon Monoxide?

Carbon Monoxide (CO) is an odorless, tasteless, invis ible gas that can be formed when fuels like charcoal, coal, gasoline, kerosene, natural gas, propane, or wood are burned with an insucient supply of air.

A natural gas appliance could produce carbon monoxide if: • Boxes, laundry, or other materials are blocking the base, restricting airow. • e vent hood, pipes, or ues are blocked or corroded. • e unit is installed or adjusted improperly • It is used incorrectly (i.e., heating a room with a gas stove or using a gas or charcoal grill indoors). • e heat exchanger is cracked.

Call the Lake City Natural Gas Department for natural gas appliance inspections. Natural gas furnaces and heating products such as replace logs and space heaters should be inspected every year. Other ap pliances, such as heaters, clothes dryers, ranges, and cook tops should be checked for proper operation.

All natural gas appliances come with a manual. Always read the manual for proper installation, cautions, and warnings

What Is Carbon Monoxide Poisoning?

e early eects of Carbon Monoxide poisoning mimic the u, so watch out for these warning signs: • Headache • Nausea or vomiting • Dizziness and disorientation • Muscle weakness or fatigue

If the u-like symptoms are NOT accompanied by fever, or if everyone in the family is ill, or if the symptoms disappear when you leave the house, you may have a CO prob lem. If CO symptoms are present, leave the building immedi ately and call the Lake City Natural Gas Department at 758-5405, and we will send a trained technician to test for Carbon Monoxide. Prevention is the only way to deal with carbon monoxide, and the best pre vention is regular inspection by a trained service technician. Prevent Damage to Pipelines

Today, more and more utility companies that supply your home with electrical power, natural and propane gas, water, sewer, telephone, and cable television service are delivering those services underground. It’s also possible that these bur ied service lines are close to the surface, making digging a dangerous and expensive proposition.

Fortunately, you can nd out where utility owned lines are buried on your property with one FREE call to Sunshine State One Call at 811. When you make that one call, Sunshine State One Call will notify our member companies of your project and will, in turn, advise you where the buried lines are located.

Florida law requires that you wait two full business days before beginning your project. is law also applies to contractors, excavators, or anyone who is digging on private or public property.

e majority of utility accidents are caused by hitting underground utility lines. For additional information call Sunshine State One Call at 811 or visit their web site at www.Sunshine811.com. Learn More

Florida, Jacqui Sulek, said the event likely made event attendance history. The hawks, falcons, and owls of Kitty Carroll of Live Oak’s Accipiter Enterprises were a main draw. They were followed closely by the snakes and turtles of the Florida Park Service and Ichetucknee Springs State Park, while a more mature audience seemed drawn to the native plant species given away by Four Rivers Audubon. “It’s all about connecting people with nature,” said Sulek. “Without native plants you don’t have birds. When we take all of our native plants out of our landscape we lose our birds” Sulek said the lake is a site on the Great Florida Birding Trail, which she said was boon for local tourism with the “second most popular hobby in the United States.” She said there was another reason the event was held at the lake. “It’s also the headwa- ters for the Ichetucknee, and that’s very important because what we put on the land around here and what people put on their yards, that type of thing, all goes into that spring- shed system. The springs are the beginning of the water, not the end,” Sulek TOP LEFT: Kitty Carroll, of said. TALLAHASSEE — When Willie Taggart was hired by Florida State last December, he described his philosophy in two words — lethal simplicity. The spring practices and Saturday’s Garnet and Gold game showed the Seminoles have embraced the changes. The players aren’t the only ones who have embraced the start of the Taggart Era. SUNDAY, APRIL 15, 2018 SPORTS LAKE CITY REPORTER 3B The quest for the perfect flats skiff By MONTY STEPHENS Special to the Reporter he term “Flats Skiff” seems like a broad, generic term that might apply to any boat fishing inshore T waters. It is true that many styles of boats can serve as a flats skiff. But in south Florida where the boat we know as a flats skiff originated, there is one style. Flats skiff are usually under 20 ft. long. Their style emerged in the late 1960s and 70’s as fishermen and fisherwomen sought better ways to ply the shallow waters for bonefish, permit, and tarpon. They are usually extra wide for stability so fishermen can cast from their large decks. Since push poles are used to maneuver in the shallow waters, they often times have a rear platform to stand on. Flats skiffs are now more popular than ever and can be found in use COURTESY PHOTOS throughout the coastal areas of the southern US and LEFT: Hull is outfitted with Divinycell and fiberglass. Through the decades since their inception, boat builders have continuously refined the flats skiff style in a manner suggestive of “form follows function.” So they have changed. But for at least one fisherman, the boats currently being produced do not have the classic “lines” and style that he desires. That left him with only one choice, build his own. Or perhaps he just wanted to build his own boat and tackle a monumental challenge. We’re talking about Reeve Abraben, DMD. Dr. Abraben has practiced Dentistry in Lake City for over 28 years and is the owner of Lake City Family Dental Center. He grew up in south Florida (Miami area) and came to Lake City shortly after graduating from the University of Florida. FWC returns panther family back to the wild From staff reports A female panther and her two kittens are back in the wild today, after spending months in captivity. On April 10, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) pan- ther team released the panther family on the Picayune Strand State Forest in Collier County. This is the first time the FWC has rescued, reha- bilitated and released a family group of panthers. FWC biologists res- cued the adult female panther, known as FP224, in December 2017 after she was struck by a vehi- COURTESY cle on Collier Boulevard in Naples. They took her to the Animal Specialty Hospital of Florida in Naples where veteri- narians determined she had a broken hind leg. Following a successful surgery to repair the fracture, the FWC pan- ther veterinarian took the panther to White Oak Conservation Foundation for rehabilitation. In June, FP224 pro- duced a litter of one female and two male kit- tens, and biologists sus- pected these kittens were near where their mother was injured. They set up cameras to locate the young panthers, and two of the kittens were pho- tographed and captured immediately thereafter. Unfortunately, biologists were not able to capture the third kitten. Contact Editor Robert Bridges 754-0428 [email protected] LIFE Sunday, April 15, 2018 www.lakecityreporter.com Section D Horses helping kids Equestrian therapy plays a big role for some students at local private school.

By COREY ARWOOD [email protected] “The horses know,” said Katherine King. King’s an ESE equestrian coach at Lake City Christian Academy and she was referring to the two special- ly trained therapy horses that LCCA students in the school’s exceptional student education program work with. “Our program is unique in the sense they can compete in compe- titions. It gives them the chance to be a normal equestrian, they don’t know they have the disability when they’re on the horse,” she said. Her class recently competed in the Special Olympics held in February in Gainesville. “We just finished the state,” King said. It was only the second year in the school’s history the program had participated. She said the competitions helped the students. It immersed them in the experience. “They do what we call speed events,” categories like barrels and poles, and trail obstacles, King said. The events were “very technical” though the kids “are capable of com- peting.” King, 27, has been with the local academy a little over a year and despite her age, has an extensive Photos by COREY ARWOOD/Lake City Reporter history in the therapeutic dressage combo. It’s “always been a passion,” she said. From Live Oak, she said she start- ed out in 4H acquainting kids with horses. At LCCA she calls herself the barn manager and said she also teaches the Special Olympics program. Before her time at the school she worked with injured soldiers through the Wounded Warriors Project. “It was a big transition from going to Wounded Warriors ... to kids,” King said. “It was a good transition.” Since she started she said she’s always used horses in her therapy. “It’s hard to explain,” King said. “They know.” It’s important they do too when the child riding them could seize at any moment, which King says hap- pens with students suffering from a range of disorders. “They’re a very special horse to be able to do that program,” she said. Most of the LCCA kids in her classes have varying degrees of autism and learning disorders, while others had traumatic brain injuries. “None of the kids are told no unless they physicially can’t do it,” King said. The school’s website shows it is part of PATH International, or the Professional Association TOP: Katherine King puts a bridle on Zoe while Bobbie waits to of Therapeutic Horsemanship ride. They participate at other venues outside the Special Olympics, King said, like the Columbia County Riding Club’s All Stars event and at the Florida Sheriff’s Youth Boys Ranch Open House and Horse Show.
