The 1,000th Game For Southern University Football Today’s game against Memphis St. will be the 1,000th game in Southern University football history. The Jaguars’ record in that span is 605-364-30 in 101 years of Jaguar Football.

FBS Not Kind Too The Jaguars The Southern Jaguars started playing FBS teams in 2002 when Coach took his team down I-10 to New Orleans to face Tulane in the season opener. Coach Pete did not like the fact of playing a “bigger” opponent because he thought it would hurt some key players at the start of the season. The Jaguars lost that game, 37-19 and finished the season 6-6 overall and 5-2 in the SWAC. The Jaguars would not play another FBS opponent for another 6 years until they traveled to Houston to take on the Cougars in 2008. The Jaguars have played a total of 14 FBS teams and today’s game with Memphis will make it 15. Coach Dawson Odums has coached in 10 of those matchups and today will be his 11th. Southern is 0-14 against FBS teams and Odums is 0-10. Average score in all 14 games- FBS opponents 52 Southern U. 13. They are no FBS opponents on the 2020 football schedule at this time.

The “J” Five? The 2019 Southern Jaguar football players have given a name to the Offensive Line, “The J-FIVE.” That’s because all 5 of their names start with the letter, “J.” J’Atyre Carter at Left Tackle, Jeremiah Abby at Left Guard, Jaylon Brinson at Center, Jonathan Bishop at Right Guard and Jodeci Harris at Right Tackle. All 5 are returning starters from last year.

Take Away Ratio Key To Winning Last year, the Southern Jaguars were one of the best teams in the nation in the Turnover margin. The 2018 Jaguars ranked 29th Nationally and 2nd in the SWAC with 10 fumble recoveries & 10 Interceptions. The offense had 8 fumbles lost and 8 interceptions for a Turnover Ratio of +4. In last week’s opener with McNeese St., Southern had 5 lost fumbles & 0 interceptions. The defense did not create a turnover so the Jaguars start the season at (-5.)

Early Bird Doesn’t Often Get The Jaguars For the 3rd time since 2015, the Jaguars will have an 11am Kickoff. In 2015, the game with Georgia in Athens and last year’s game with TCU in Fort Worth kicked off at 11am. Today’s game with Memphis St. will also start at 11am. According to several of the Jaguar-nation, they don’t remember any other games starting that early in the history of Southern Football.

Did You Notice? Southern scored 14 points in the 4th Quarter in the game against the Cowboys of McNeese St last week. The Jaguars scored 14 total points in the 4th Quarter all of last year.

The Jaguar Defense Stood Their Ground The result may have not been with the Jaguars wanted but one thing stood out-The Jaguar Defense will be there in 2019. The Jaguars allowed 154 yards rushing in the game but that came mostly in the 2nd half as well as the 149 yards passing for a total of 303 yards allowed for the game. McNeese got 136 yards in 1st half of total offense with 31 yards rushing and 105 yards passing. The TD Drives for the Cowboys in the 1st half was from 29 yards & 13 yards out after Southern fumbled the ball away on a Punt Return then in the 2nd Quarter another fumble came this time from the offense.

Some Fresh Jaguars Step Up In the loss to McNeese St last week, some fresh new faces stepped up to the line and ran with it. Ø QB Glendon McDaniel passed for 135 yards and was 11 out of 19 in Pass Attempts. He also threw a TD and rushed for another. That was 1st ever Rushing TD in his career and his 2nd TD Pass. He threw a TD last year against Langston. Ø WR Hunter Register had 4 Receptions for 82 yards and 2 TD’s including a 43 yarder from LaDarius Skelton. That was Register’s 2nd & 3rd TD catches. He got his 1st in his career at Southern last year in the UAPB game. Ø WR Timothy Bedford also responded with his 1st career TD from 33 yards out from the arm of Skelton. Ø CB #10 Jordan Eastling got his 1st start of his career at Southern and he made some good moves. He had a great “open field” Tackle in the McNeese game as well as a Pass Breakup. The R-JR transfer from Texas St. is from Atlanta, Georgia.

Another Record Crowd For The Jaguar-Nation The travels as well as any school big or small. That was evident last week at in Lake Charles. A record attendance was achieved as officials announced the crowd for the Southern/McNeese game at 20,437. Louisiana Lafayette had their biggest crowd against Southern at 41,357 on Sept. of 2009. They have 3rd largest crowd at a La. Tech football game at 27,905 in 2015.

Overtime Anyone? The last time the Southern Jaguars were involved in an Overtime game was the 2013 SWAC Championship game against Jackson St. on Dec. 7th. Southern won that game in 2-OT’s 34-27. In fact, Southern played in (4) Overtime games that year. The Jaguars also beat PVU, 62-59 in (2 OT), Alabama A&M 20-17 (2 OT) and lost to Alcorn St. in OT, 38-44. Coach Odums is 3-2 in Overtime games since coaching at Southern in 2012.

Pre-Season Honors For The Jaguars During SWAC Media Days in Birmingham, the conference officials named the 2019 Pre-Season All-SWAC Team. Southern placed 6 players total on the 2 teams. On the 1st Team- OL Jodeci Harris on Offense and on Defense DL Jordan Lewis. On the 2nd Team- Offense-RB Devon Benn, TE Jeremias Houston, OL Jaylon Brinson & DB Montavious Gaines. As a team, the Jaguars were picked to finish 1st in the SWAC West and Alcorn St. was dubbed as champ of the East.

New Coaching Roles For The Jaguars There are some new assignments this year on the Bluffs for the Jaguars. Starting with new Defensive Coordinator Lionel Washington. He’s from Lutcher and spent 27 years in the NFL in either coaching or playing. This is his 2nd season at Southern. Wayne Cordova in his 1st season coaching Safeties & Charlie Ayro coached at McNeese St. last year and will coach Linebackers this year at SU. On the Offensive side of the ball, new TE’s Coach Macander Dieudonne is coming from Lake Whales in Florida.

The Human Jukebox Will Perform At Rose Bowl Parade will perform today in Memphis and at the Rose Bowl Parade in Pasadena, California on Jan. 1st 2020. The band has entertained crowds at (6) Super Bowls, the Inaugural Parade for President Clinton (1997) & the grand introduction for Floyd Merriweather (2015).

§ Raising Canes sponsors the Human Jukebox. § The band has over 130,000 followers on Facebook. § Over 50,000 on Instagram. § YouTube videos reaching over 1 million views. § The Dancing Dolls performed with Beyonce for a concert special on Netflix earlier this year. § Listed as one of the Best Bands in the nation by USA Today, NCAA, ESPN & Time Magazine. § The Human Jukebox was founded in 1947. Lewis Picking Up Where He Left Off Last Year Soph. DE #32 Jordan Lewis is right back to sacking Quarterbacks in 2019. He’s credited with ½ a sack in last week’s game bringing his career total to 12 ½ sacks in just 12 games in his career. Last year he had at least 1 sack in every game except for the TCU, La. Tech and the SWAC Championship game against Alcorn St. In 3 of those games he got 2 sacks each. He recorded 27 tackles in his career with 12 ½ coming as sacks.

Will Defense Change With New Coordinator? New Defensive Coordinator Lionel Washington promises the same schemes this year and thinks the result will be the same. The Jaguars will run a basic 4-3-4 scheme. Washington coached the Cornerbacks last year and had a very lengthy career in football. He played college at Tulane from 1979-1982 and was drafted by the St. Louis Cardinals in 4th Round-103rd pick. In his 15 year career in the NFL, he played for the Cardinals, Raiders and Broncos. He also coached DB’s another 12 years. He coached in Green Bay from 1999-2008 and with Oakland from 2009- 2010. He went back to Tulane from 2012-2017 as CO-DC. This is his 2nd year at Southern University. He’ll coach from the sidelines this season as DC.

Opening Day Record For Jaguars’ History With last week’s loss to McNeese, the Jaguars have a record of 57-35-6 on Opening Day of the season. (3 games were canceled-1938, 1943 & 2005). Before 2002 when the Jaguars started playing FBS teams, Southern was 52-24-6 on opening day and since then the Jaguars have gone 5-11. Coach Odums is 1-6 on Opening Day games beating South Carolina St. in 2017. Last week was the 2nd game Southern played McNeese St. on opening day. The 2 teams played the opener in 2004 in BR and were also scheduled to play the opener in 2005 as well.

Coach Dawson Odums (8th Year at Southern University) (50-30 overall & 44-17 in SWAC) A native of Shelby, N.C., Odums began his coaching career returning to his high school alma mater, Crest High School, where he turned in a stellar playing career for the Eagles of North Carolina Central University in Durham. As a three-year starter, he became an AII-CIAA selection his senior year, and also served as a team captain. Following his playing career, he earned a Bachelor's of Science Degree in Physical Education in 1997. Odums joined the Jaguars defensive staff after three seasons in various positions at Mid- Eastern Atlantic Conference traditional power, North Carolina A& T. Prior to his arrival in Baton Rouge, Odums most recently served as the Aggies Defensive Coordinator in 2010 after having served as the schools defensive line coach and special team's coordinator in the previous two seasons. In the history of Southern University Football, only two coaches have conquered such feats as winning the SWAC West Title, SWAC Championship and being named SWAC Coach of the Year in their first full season as head coach. Current Head Football Coach Dawson Odums holds that unique distinction as he looks to take the program to even higher heights as he embarks on his eighth season at Southern University here on the bluffs of the Mississippi River in 2019. At his time at Southern University Coach Odums compiled a Conference record of (44-17), an Overall record of (50-29). Coach Odums has also coach 20 1st Team All-Conference players, 12 2nd Team All-Conference players, and 5 All American players which are Lee Doss, Dray Joseph, Willie Quinn, Lenard Tillery and Jodeci Harris. Also at his tenure at Southern University Coach Odums has been blessed to send 6 players to the NFL/CFL which are Rashaun Allen (), Arthur Miley (), Mike Jones and Willie Quinn (Hamilton Tiger-Cats), Lenard Tillery () and Danny Johnson (Washington Redskins). With 19 years of coaching experience under his belt, Coach Odums lacks no motivation for the 2019 season as he looks to continue the winning ways Southern accumulated in his 4th season by instilling the core values of a Jaguar (Commitment, Discipline, Effort, Toughness & Pride) on a daily basis in all facets of the program. Coach Odums has been married to his beautiful wife Audrey for 19 years, and reside in Zachary with their two daughters, Jasmine and Jaiden.
