CHILI, 1973. -

Daniel is abducted by Pinochet’s secret police and Lena tracks him to a sealed off area in the South of the country, called Colonia Dignidad. The Colonia presents itself as a charitable mission run by lay preacher and ex-Nazi Paul Schäfer but is, in fact, a place from which no one has ever escaped. -

In the last quarter, German Films has also been busy adapting its core activities to the current situation with COVID-19. Like all our international festival partners, we needed to switch our film promotion activ- ities to virtual or hybrid events within a very short time. Many processes have been speeded up – it has meant less travelling to festivals for all of us, and a majority of conferences and pitchings went online; sometimes, this even happened to entire film festivals. Personally, I expect that we will continue to work and promote German films and talents under these conditions until the end of 2021. Most festival events will no doubt be hybrid in the near future, and films will be shown in cinemas under the most hygienic conditions possible, in front of fewer guests, with a chessboard seating pattern for the necessary distance. Filmmakers will not always be able to attend. The majority of the industry’s events will also take place online. This means for German Films that we must follow a “double-track policy” as well, in order to support the physical as well as the online events. -

LIYA SALLY KEBEDE HAWKINS desert flower A film by SHERRY HORMANN design: isaraufwärts / glendundglenda, photos: Walter Wehner (stills) / Mathias Bothor (portraits) © 2009 The Match Factory Based on the bestselling novel by WARIS DIRIE I had a lot of dreams as a child but never did I imagine that I would one day see my life on the big screen. Returning to the desert brought back all my memories with such an intensity and force that the experience overwhelmed me. Especially the Somali children in the film, Soraya who played me as a child, the small angel Saffa who had to play so much suffering in the film, and the young Idris who played my brother so wonderfully and authentically. The first time I met producer Peter Herrmann years ago, he got on my last nerve. Yet today I have to say, he really gave it his all. The whole film turned out to be so beautiful and the most beautiful thing about it is the pictures of the African landscape. And Sherry Hormann, our director, displayed incredible courage daring to embark on such a complex journey. I thought we would probably clash with each other at some point during the shooting but my intuition told me to trust her and just let her do her job. And she couldn’t have done it better. Liya, my sister, we have so much in common. You have become a part of me and your work is a great achievement. The first time I watched the finished film, it was not easy for me to see my life portrayed on the big screen. -

In 1936, Nazi propaganda urges German Alpinists to conquer the unclimbed north face of the Swiss massif, the Eiger, bringing two reluctant climbers, Toni Kurz (BENNO FÜRMANN) and Andi Hinterstoisser (FLORIAN LUKAS), to begin their daring ascent and attempt to scale the infamous rock face, often called the Murder Wall. While preparing themselves at the foot of the North Face, Toni and Andi unexpectedly run into Luise (JOHANNA WOKALEK), the early love of Toni. Now a journalist, she has come with her boss Arau (ULRICH TUKUR), a loyal Nazi, to report about the first ascent. Toni begins the ascent of the North Face with Andi, closely followed by two Austrians Willy Angerer (SIMON SCHWARZ) and Edi Rainer (GEORG FRIEDRICH).
