The KIDSTAGE program began in 1985 when Robb Hunt decided to take the “down-time” of summer and give the theatre (at that time, First Stage Theatre in Issaquah) to kids, who would put together a show of their own. And so, a tradition was born that has lasted (and EVERETT indeed grown) to this very day. 32 years later, the KIDSTAGE program produces not one, but SUMMER INDEPENDENT five summer productions each year between the July 12-22, 2018 Issaquah and Everett locations.

The most unique of these programs is Summer Independent, which continues the tradition that began in 1985, when the theatre was simply turned over to students to create and produce their own full-scale musical. When I met Steve Tomkins, who was performing in Angry Housewives at Cats, 2005-2006* Pioneer Square Theatre, I knew he was the person we needed to put that huge show on what is now First Stage. Watching how he worked with the The Music Man, 2004-2005* cast, I thought he would be a great director as well, so I asked him to direct and choreograph Gypsy the next season and he has been directing and/ or choreographing at Village Theatre ever since. We have worked together now for 32 years. Steve helped shape new musicals like Anne of Green Gables and Stunt Girl and re-energized classic musicals like Singin’ in the Rain. His productions of Mary Poppins and Billy Elliot will be long remembered along with many, many more. Steve has been an incredible partner, and it will not be the same without him in the office next door. But he and I are both excited to see what Jerry Dixon brings to Village Theatre.
