They have also been accused of forcing the accused’s surety to pay Rs 1,000 to them for not execut- ing a court order. The erring officials — con- stables Parmod Kumar, Viresh Kumar, Arun Rai and head constable Karar Hus- sain — are posted at the R K Puram police station. Deputy commissioner of police (south-west) Tajinder Luthra said the officers have been suspended and a depart- mental inquiry has been started against them. Accused Chandan Singh had failed to appear in the court in a case where he is ac- cused of impersonating a student and appearing in Class 12 board exams three years ago. When Singh failed to ap- pear, the court of metropoli- tan magistrate Kamini Lau issued a non-bailable war- rant against Singh’s surety, Deepak Gauba, and directed the police to attach his prop- erty. But Gauba, who was present in the court, in- formed the magistrate that he had taken Singh to the po- lice station a day before the hearing. He claimed to have paid money to the officials who promised to produce Singh before the court. Following this revelation an inquiry was initiated by the assistant commissioner of police (Vasant Vihar). The report confirms that the offi- cials permitted Singh to go and meet his family while their SHO had directed them to ensure the accused does not escape from the custody. The inquiry also found the policemen guilty of accept- ing money from the surety. Ironically, the surety had traced the accused and hand- ed him to the local police. ‘‘The officials forced him to pay Rs 1,000 for not attaching his property,’’the report stat- ed. After taking the accused’s custody, the officials took him to the additional SHO and then to the SHO. They, however, did not give details about the court directives. In- stead, they gave the impres- sion that Singh was the cul- prit and the court had issued non-bailable warrants against him. Rai prompted Hussain to let Singh leave for the night with the assurance to pro- duce him in the court. Singh, however, went missing. Illegal mining continues in Rajasthan TIMES NEWS NETWORK New Delhi: Mining opera- tions in some parts of Ra- jasthan are continuing in questionable circumstances. For instance, mining is being carried out in Alwar district near the city ‘‘illegally’’ by some stone crusher owners who do not have the licences for carrying out the opera- tions in gair mumkin (non- cultivable) and forest land. Prior sanction of the Cen- tral Empowered Committee (CEC) is necessary for break- ing stones through quarry- ing or mining in such re- stricted areas. But in these cases, the state government issued licences for stone crushing at sites located just on the periphery of the areas where mining is ‘‘banned’’. On paper, no prior sanc- tion of the CEC is needed for licences. But the licence- holders in such areas have encroached on restricted ar- eas, including forest land, for mining. The state govern- ment had told the Supreme Court in December 2002 that it had not given any licence for mining after 1999. There- fore, the ban imposed on the activity in non-restricted ar- eas should be lifted. However, what was not dis- closed was that at least six stone crusher lease-holders were carrying on mining ‘‘il- legally’’ in Alwar alone. The crushers engaged in mining without the CEC’s ap- proval are located at Jharpuri, Choupanki, Chu- jarpur, Bulavat, Ughalwas and Sare Khurd. In Choupan- ki, four mining leases have also been granted by the state government.

What’s next? The Williams sisters have won just about everything there is to win in women’s tennis. Eight Grand Slam singles titles between them, five doubles titles in the majors and nine overall on the tour, plus the Sydney Olympic Games. But all that one fan wanted to know at the Mel- bourne Park as they went about their on-court business was: “I wonder if they fight like normal sisters?” Who knows? But the Williams have given an insight into life off the court. A new face: Get ready for a new face on the podium. For the first time since 1995, the women’s singles quarterfinals do not feature a reigning or for- mer champion. Lindsay Daven- port’s defeat by Justine Henin- Hardenne in a fourth-round thriller brought to an end the participation this year of four defending or past Australian Open champions. United colors: The Williams’ also cut a colourful image out on court when they took on Martina Navartilova and Svet- lana Kuznetsova in a doubles match earlier in the week. Ser- ena has been wearing dresses with rhinestones on them, which she has attached her- self. But against Navratilova and Kuznetsova, the rhine- stones were absent. Instead she was decked out in orange and Venus in yellow. Partners on and off court: Former women’s world number one Steffi Graf will partner hus- band Andre Agassi in the mixed doubles at this year’s if Agassi wins the Australian Open. The ultimate love match is a distinct possi- bility with Agassi two matches away from clinching his fourth Australian title. Reports say that Agassi had made a bet with his wife that she must play doubles with him in Paris if he won the title. Groundstrokes: Agassi’s in- terview with John McEnroe’s was a treat. McEnroe asked Agassi if he still hit up with his wife, Steffi Graf. “You think I’m an inspiration at 32, you should see her at 33,” said Agassi.
