  • Sweet Beats and Christmas Cheer: December New Album Reviews
Sweet Beats And Christmas Cheer: December New Album Reviews Music | Bittles’ Magazine: The music column from the end of the world With the temperature getting colder and snow in the air, what is better than gathering the family around the fire and listening to some tunes? Dad wants the Beatles, Mum Take That, while the kids demand One Direction and Thirty Seconds To Mars. But what you need is something all the family can enjoy! By JOHN BITTLES Luckily this December brings a stream of releases that could even put a smile on Granny’s grouchy old face. We have the alien art-house visions of Arca, the sub-aquatic warmth of Deepchord, the slacker rock stirrings of Cass McCombs, the stoned shoegaze of The Telescopes, the funk-strewn acid of Paranoid London and lots more. So, start warming those chestnuts, turn all iPhones and tablets off, and let us begin… This month we’ll start by entering Venezuelan artist Arca’s strange, electronic world. While last year’s debut full-length Xen was something of a disappointment, expectations have still been sky-high for the follow-up from the moment it was announced. His previous work with the likes of Bjork and FKA twigs highlighted how Arca was a single-minded entity whose unique mindset and vision marked him out as someone who could take music to places it had never been. At times angry and punishing, at others soft and tranquil, Mutant may be far from an easy listen, yet it is a thrilling one all the same.

LETTER FROM THE DEQ STAFF Between the time of our previous edition and the one currently in your hands, Detroit Electronic Quarterly and the Detroit music community at-large lost one of its most generous, encouraging advocates. And quite simply one of the best people ever to set foot within city limits. LaVell Williams made his transition on Saturday Oc- tober 27th, 2018, and did so in a manner reflective of how he chose to live every single day: listening to the music of his heroes, holding hands of those who loved him deeply, and selflessly comforting everyone with grace, love and care. He was a tireless, vocal advocate for numerous move- ments and a generous participant. It was a common sight to see LaVell volunteering at a registration table for AIDS Walk Detroit, helping program the Michigan Lesbian & Gay Film Festival, setting up equipment at the inaugural Detroit Electronic Music Festival, or working with families to present quilts at the AIDS Quilt Project in Hart Plaza. One of the great loves of his life was helping to pre- serve the music and history of the city he loved so much. In 2011, he became a founding member of the Detroit Sound Conservancy. It was not uncommon to see LaVell and Conservancy founder Dr. Carleton Gholz running from a jazz concert at Baker’s to a rock show at the Majestic to an afterhours in Eastern Mar- ket, often all on the same night’s calendar, enjoying each with equal enthusiasm. or, friend, companion, sounding board, punching bag, LaVell was probably best known to readers of this pub- Mother Superior, hall monitor, drama negotiator, refer- lication as a manager of the legendary record store ee, family member and deeply beloved.

  • Lena Circonstances / Variations 1-4

  • In Praise of Old Noise: March New Album Reviews. Part 2
In praise of old Noise: March new album reviews. Part 2 Music | Bittles’ Magazine: The music column from the end of the world There has been a bit of controversy recently about the amount of reissues clogging up our record stores‘ shelves. For instance, some have argued, correctly in my opinion, that the glut of re-released albums is harming new music. You only have to pop into your local record emporium, or look at the release list for this year’s Record Store Day to see how this could be a problem. Yet, the humble reissue does have its place! By JOHN BITTLES Something this week’s album reviews highlight all too well. In-between fantastic new LPs by the likes of Cullen Omori, Solar Bears, Long Arm, Steve Mason and Wareika are unearthed classics by Tricky, Third Eye Foundation, Fluxion and The (Hypothetical) Prophets. Of the four only Pre-Millennium Tension by Tricky has been widely available before. In fact Around The World With by The (Hypothetical) Prophets is rightly considered a ‚lost‘ classic and has been unavailable for decades. This is what makes reissues worthwhile. They make accessible records which have previously been kept under lock and key and hoarded by dusty collectors, or which sell for hundreds of Euros on Discogs. The first of these reissues comes from Bristol heavyweight and trip hop survivor Tricky. Skilled Mechanics released earlier this year is a furious, righteous and sublime slice of wax. Hot on its heels is Pre-Millennium Tension, an album which does a startling job of illustrating exactly why everyone fell in love with Tricky’s music in the first place.
