cooperation, family and work balance. The Patron, Jen Pope, highlighted the need for women to work together to achieve social change and the importance of organisations like WAGNI. Jen then introduced the first guest speaker, Cheryl Davenport. Cheryl is well known in the community for her work as the former Chief of Staff of the Norfolk Island Government. Cheryl spoke of the role of Joan Kirner in mentoring and assisting women to achieve in public life, and who was instrumental in inspiring the founding of WAGNI. Cheryl spoke of the importance of Women’s Advocacy Group, networking and the need for women to persevere with advocating for social change and justice. Cheryl gave Norfolk Island examples like the success of the Women’s Electoral Launch of a new community not for profit Lobby (WEL), keenly active through the 70’s, 80’s organisation on Norfolk Island and 90’s, whose members achieved significant social change like abortion law reform and a high profile in politics, and provided a beacon for future leaders. Cheryl ended by reading from a recent, moving oration by Julia Gillard, who reminded us all that social justice for women is not a given: it must be fought for and always defended, and of the leading role that Joan Kirner has played in this. The second guest speaker was Chelsea Evans who has recently returned to the island after graduating with an Honours Degree in Sociology and Cultural Studies. Chelsea attended the Commonwealth Youth Parliament in London and the Women’s Parliamentary Forum in Sydney where she met young women from all over the world who shared common goals and aspirations for equality and equity in their cultures and communities. Chelsea encouraged us to value how strong women are in our own community and how many unique talents we have, like sharing and caring for each other, standing up and being strong. She eloquently finished by asking that we empower each other and ourselves, stand proud and strong, acknowledge and use our abilities, and to remember that these qualities are like Last Sunday afternoon a group of women of all ages natural resources, just lying beneath the surface. gathered for a late afternoon tea to launch the Women’s Importantly, Jen Pope concluded the launch by Advocacy Group of Norfolk Island (WAGNI). There will be more detailed COMMUNITY ARTS NEWS details in our next News. Pitcairn Weaving Persons who are interested in any of the Arts and Following on from last year’s successful weaving would like to join Community Arts, meetings are workshops Leona Young- Hermens, a New Zealand held 7:00 pm on the first Monday of each month at based Pitcairn Islander, is back again for a series of the school. Everyone is welcome and warmly invited advanced weaving workshops which commenced last to attend. More information can be obtained from any week and continue til 14th June. Last year weavers Community Arts member or Secretary Donald Ph. mastered the art of making small trinket baskets known 22249 on the island as ‘Baby’ baskets. In this advanced course, participants will learn to make what is traditionally known as an ‘old fashioned’ basket now rarely made due to the fact that much of the weaving techniques involved have been lost. Like our language, Pitcairn weaving is diminishing and today there are less than half a dozen people who weave. Traditionally, weaving was done solely by the women and passed down from mother to daughter METALFIX or grandmothers in some instances. Methods and techniques were taught orally hence nothing was For all your rust problems documented. Along with other handicrafts such as Phone Denys on 23886 or mob 55514 hats, fans, carvings, etc. baskets were made for sale to passengers visiting Pitcairn Island aboard cruise ships and smaller passenger liners. The sale of souvenirs supplemented families’ income and girls were expected to start learning to weave and make other handicrafts at an early age. A lot of work and effort goes into the preparation of collecting and preparing the leaves from the Pandanus or Piore in readiness for weaving. Wooden carvings were usually carved by menfolk and the ladies soon realised that they could make more money if they too started to carve. A basket that would take more time and effort to complete would sell for around a third of the price of a carved flying fish or turtle! Tradition has now given way to practicality and more women are involved and focus on carving as opposed to weaving. Woven articles were never thought of as artwork and very few pieces are left on Pitcairn with none currently displayed in the local museum. Due to Leona’s continuing weaving, study and research of Pitcairn weaving styles, Leona is hoping that there might be some people on Norfolk that may have some treasures in their collection, particularly of weaving styles and patterns made pre-1960 on Pitcairn and are willing to share by allowing a photograph or two, if so you can contact Leona direct on 52715. It is hoped that learning through these workshops by sharing some of the basic skills and methods will help regain knowledge that are an integral part of our cultural identity. Knowledge gained will be documented and preserved for future generations to come. Leona gave a very informed talk sharing her knowledge of weaving and cultural significance to the Community Arts meeting last Monday evening. Leona also extended her thanks and gratitude to Wayne Boniface and Community Arts for their support and assistance in making the Weaving workshops possible. And then the rejoicing starts. Verse 7 of the same chapter states “I say to you that likewise there will be more joy in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety- nine just persons who need no repentance”. We see here clearly that God doesn’t write us off when we wander off from Him, or even deliberately The Prodigal’s Father turn away from Him. He pursues us, wherever we When reading the story of the prodigal son, we have may go and whatever terrible mess we get ourselves to realise that this story is the third one of three that into. He loves us as His children, and no matter how Jesus told in Luke 15. The first two establish the fact great our sins, He is ready to forgive and take us back. that the stories are not about physical reality, but rather Many people say that they are not able to return to portrays God in His spiritual relationship to us as God, because He could never forgive the things that sinners. The father in the prodigal son story therefore they had done. What rubbish! represents God and His interaction with a number of God never uses force to bring us to Him. He uses individuals. only love, and will try to gently persuade us, but He In the story, both sons are working for their father, always gives each of us free choice. And even if we therefore they represent Christians serving God, but the make the wrong choice, He doesn’t go off in a huff, youngest one decides to leave God. He is quite open but waits patiently until we get to the stage where about it, tells God that he will no longer be serving we come to our senses, at which point He gives His Him, and that he will be leaving with everything God unconditional love and forgiveness. He is willing to will let him have. And so he leaves God’s presence wait a lifetime, and give countless chances, and He and travels to a “far country”, which represents being never gives up on us. God truly is love! spiritually as far as it is possible to go from God. And DF when you go as far as possible from God, you leave yourself wide open to the devil, to evil. The story goes on to tell us that this ex-Christian wastes what he had received from God with wild living. Everything spiritual in him is disappearing, as he throws himself into what he would have called great sinfulness just a short while before. But this cannot last, and he comes to the stage where he is spiritually busy dying. No one in his circle of acquaintances is able to give him anything to solve this spiritual hunger, and all at once he comes to his senses. He realises that God had given him everything he needed, and that he wants to go back to Him. His thought pattern shows that he has never really gotten to know God, as he thinks he will have to try and persuade God to take him back. He’s willing to go back as a servant, to work his way back into God’s favour. He totally misses the fact that God, because of His great love for us, is in the business of saving sinners. Also that He only has children which he saves by His grace, and that no-one can work his or her way into God’s favour. And so he turns back towards God, still filthy from his indulgence in sin. This is called repentance, and the moment he decides, God knows and runs towards him. This is the only picture of God running in the Bible, and remember that this guy is still a sinful, horrible mess. And God does not stop at a distance and tell him to first clean himself up, He embraces him and kisses him. This shows that God accepts us where we are, no matter how disgusting our spiritual state. Now the sinner starts to plead to be allowed to work his way into God’s good graces, but God cuts him off, and tells some of His followers to cover this returned sinner’s spiritual nakedness with the best robe. This best robe is the robe of Christ’s righteousness. God takes the sinner’s filthy rags, and gives Him the clothing of His own righteousness. Does he deserve it? No way, but that is how God works. To give us, repenting sinners the great gift of salvation when none NORFOLK ISLAND Healthcare Levy Act 1990 Healthcare and Medical Evacuation Levy
